Gibson Basses / A rare bird spotted for sale on another forum...
« on: August 12, 2022, 03:18:45 PM »
First and foremost, NO affiliation with the seller on my end whatsoever...

https://www.talkbass.com/threads/1998-gibson-custom-shop-lee-sklar-signature-model-bass-rare-bass-with-nice-original-case.1573160/#post-26708742

Had it not been for the "Gibson Bass Book" I would've never known that this bass existed to begin with.

Has anyone here played the mongrel in question ? I'm not in the States anymore otherwise I'd take it for a spin...

Curiosity...

It's NOT a trick question. Nor a joke.

I may be able to lay my hands on a (vastly misrepresented) black EB-750 sans the original case.

There's no history of the instrument, no paperwork/COA, nothing. The present owner seems to be clueless, or is acting so.

I would hate to buy a piece that a fellow musician is crying for somewhere out there.

Any and all info would be appreciated before I actually get in the car and head to evaluate the beast.

Gibson Basses / Les Paul Bass (low impedance PUs) question
« on: December 04, 2021, 04:38:25 PM »
Hello folks,

Several months ago I acquired a '70 Les Paul Bass, but haven't really had a chance to play with it since I spent several months overseas...

What is everyone using as the impedance converter these days ? The original cable was lost somewhere over the past 50 years...

Thanks in advance for any/all wisdom that you're willing to share.

Gibson Basses / How to obtain De Cola pickups
« on: May 15, 2021, 01:26:57 PM »
A long shot as usual, but...does anyone know where I could obtain a set of DeCola humbuckers as seen in 2013/17 EB basses and some others? Gibson is not selling them directly and the only set that I see on Reverb would run me ~$400 shipped from France which is not an option that I'm excited about...

All and any wisdom that you're willing to share will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Gibson Basses / The Bird Is The Word
« on: March 22, 2021, 04:08:38 PM »
Have you heard about the bird...the most unusual one on Reverb

https://reverb.com/item/33053083-1976-gibson-thunderbird-bass-natural-flametop-5-string-custom-bass-what

The entire storyline behind it seems questionable to me, but I wouldn't mind owning it...for far less money.

The Bass Zone / Fly Guitars site down ?
« on: March 12, 2021, 12:54:25 AM »
I've noticed that for several days the Fly Guitars site - my preferred "quick and dirty" source for info on Gibson basses - has been down. This is the error that I'm getting:

Quote
Fatal error: Redefinition of parameter $spare in /home3/magicbus/require/fg/page.inc on line 865

Has anyone else encountered this or has any info on what's going on over there ?

Gibson Basses / An unusual EB-3 on Reverb

No clue whether it's a real "one off" or an alteration and I definitely wouldn't pay $6K for it but it does look interesting...thoughts ?

And here we go again...

https://guitar.com/news/gibson-sued-by-heritage/

with Gibson's official response here:

I was really hoping that the vulture capitalists running Gibson nowadays have backed off but was obviously wrong...

Gibson Basses / A Thunderbird dilemma
« on: February 22, 2020, 10:16:01 PM »
A non-Thunderbird player stopping by to ask for advice...

First and foremost, I apologize for asking a question that was likely asked before but search on the subject matter got me pretty much nowhere.

Long story short, after trying 30 or so basses within a matter of a couple of days, my bass-playing-son fell in love, head-over-heels with an Epi Vintage Pro.

I'm not cheap but tend to be frugal and am not necessarily keen on buying new. The problem is that GC used has zero to offer, and what I see on Reverb is priced way too close to new for my liking.

Here's my dilemma: by the time I add a case to VP, I'm looking at close to $900 with taxes. I know that I can pick a used Gibson Bird for 100-150 more.

What am I missing ? Are VPs *that* good when compared to more recent Gibbys ?

The only Birds I have some experience with are Bicentennials, but they are out of the equation, so please educate me...

Thanks in advance.

Gibson Basses / So my EBs are joined by their Japanese cousin...
« on: September 05, 2019, 09:12:50 PM »
Picked up a '96 Orville EB-3 a couple of days ago. Fujigen-built, obviously not a Gibby but definitely a cousin. Interesting little beast.

What's the general take on these around here ?

Of course, if I posted this in the wrong forum, by all means move it...

The Outpost Cafe / An introduction post
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:20:32 PM »
My humble regards to good people of this forum, holding the Fort Of Bass...

I signed up for this forum months ago and enjoyed reading various (mostly Gibson-related) threads but never took time to post anything myself. Now, that I'm in the position where I'll be looking for advice - as well as for an item or two - I figured that it would be appropriate that I stop by and introduce myself. Some of you may know me from TB, but for those who don't...

Started playing bass in '79, on an Italian Gherson Jazz Bass copy with a warped neck and an H/H combo. Went through a gazillion basses, amps and so forth over the course of the next two decades, then quit cold turkey.

One of my twin sons decided to start playing bass - after several years of playing trombone - and pretty much dragged me into playing again. Before one could say "Free", the stuff started piling up...basses, guitars, keyboard, portastudio...

I've fallen in love with a severely molested '69 EB-0 and she is my # 1 to the point where I'm serious when I say that she's getting buried with me. Other family members include a '70 EB-0L and a '13 EB fiver. A couple of imports of somewhat lesser importance are hanging out here as well.

That's what I've got for now. Happy to be here.
