Title: Yer Fav Blues ~ Willie Dixon
Post by: Rhythm N. Bliss on March 02, 2009, 05:45:16 PM

Put on Willie Dixon & notice how almost every 60s band did covers of his stuff.
Some of them even gave him credit.  8)
Stones, Cream, ABB, Doors, Zep, Rod Stewart & Jeff Beck, etc.
I got to see him in November 1980 at a little club in Providence called LUPO'S.
He needed a cane to get up onstage but he then used the mic stand to hold himself up as Willie Jr. played URB & other sons played guitar, piano & drums!!!!

I've got a friend from Santa Cruz stayin' with me who's a real good artist.
He's painted portraits of all the Rockers, Jazz greats, & Blues guys.
He blows a mean harp too. Gonna ask him to play on recordings of some of my songs.

I'm listening to SAVOY BROWN on YouTube Rockin' the Blues!
My fav song of theirs is I'm Tired:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYCH3Ias__g

Interesting to know that Reese Wynans was in Duane's band for just a moment before Gregg joined, & then found his place with SRV & Double Trouble & Stevie Ray changed the band's name to Triple Threat!!!
Riviera Paradise is so beautiful, Reese is excellent on it & Stevie is AMAZING:

I love KWS too~His singer Noah Hunt is great too!!

listen to stuff like son house, king biscuit boy, r.l burnside, paul jones, bessie smith, elmore james, some delta fife and drum music and even lil' axe to see how many forms the blues can take. muddy waters and robert johnson should be required listening.

imo stevie ray did for/to the blues what kenny g. did for jazz. that's a discussion for another time, though.

The drummer in my last band in Cincy worked with Noah Hunt just before he split for Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

I've always been partial to Savoy Brown, and also a little John Mayall.  I came into the blues by way of the British Invasion.

Cool beans, Gary~ Noah & KWS were impressive at NAMM last year.
They performed on the Fender stage with Double Trouble!!

I think most of us first got the Blues from the Brits.
The Blues got SUPERCHARGED by those cats.
Guys like Alvin Lee & Leo Lyons of Ten Years After tore it up!

SRV is the Greatest of the New Generation of American Bluesmen.
Hendrix showed the Brits that Americans could ACE them tooo

As I say to my four year old son... "its not a competition"

My more recent favourite blues artists is R.L.Burnside.

It may not be a competition for you, but it sure seemed like Jimi pushed the Brit Bluesmen--most notably Eric Clapton--to play harder & better.
Duane Allman pushed Clapton to do his best too. I consider it Friendly Competition. :D
After Jimi & Duane were gone, Eric lost it.
Maybe he hasn't found another worthy competitor...or collaborator.
...with all due respect to Winwood, who went soft too.
LOVED Blind Faith~ Had To Cry Today was a great HEAVY Bluesey song!
...but I sure ain't payin' sky high prices to see their upcoming tour.

Philip Sayce is my favorite these days.
Born a Welshman, grew up in Toronto. Now living and working in LA.

He's definitely got the Hendrix / SRV vibe going on. Combined with a Kravitz voice.

Peace Machine is easily the best record I've bought in years.

Sayce has chops but he dresses like a putz. haha
He's gotta get down with the Cosmic Gypsy Cowboy attire like Jimi & Stevie now that he can play a bit like them!!  8)

Oh ok~ I had just watched the first vid when I said he dresses lame.
After watchin' the last vid I see he's gettin' there with the red scarf.
I see what you mean about the Kravitz similarity tooo

That's some Rockin' Funky Blues!
Peace Machine~ I'm on it...

Good call, Basvarken!

I'm aware that SRV has fans, non-fans and detractors.  So does just about every artist.  But I don't think many would argue that he helped to re-popularize blues music with a big segment of the population who had pretty much forgotten about it.  It's a terrible shame that SRV's career was cut short - and I say that having discovered his music just shortly before his death.

I'd say the same for Belushi and Akroyd as the Blues Brothers.  I doubt that anyone here would claim they were the epitome of musicianship, although their backing band was simply incredible.  They were showmen, and having the tricks of a movie helped a lot. (Although Akroyd has demonstrated an ongoing interest in and commitment to blues music.) However, I believe that the movie and soundtrack essentially introduced a whole generation to blues music. Many of the kids who went to see the movie emerged with blues on their radar screen, even if they'd never heard of it before.

I'm in favor of any new artists digging up old tunes and re-introducing them, especially when they come up with a new take on the music.  That's one way to build respect for the people who wrote and performed it originally.

SRV was as much about image as the music.  I have to also agree that he did a LOT to bring blues back into the public eye.  You can't say that anything bad came of that.

Another form of blues that I really like is the old piano blues.  I need to dig around and get some recordings of all that.

I love that list John with the exception of Gary Moore. He has awesome chops but for me there is just something missing. I have listened long and hard and seen him live twice (once I nearly fell asleep). I cant put my finger on it but its like he doesn't mean it somehow. As it happens I've been driving around listening to the album he did with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker over the last few days.

The best I can do to explain it is to listen to Roy Buchannans version of Messiah and then listen to Moores. Asamazing as his chops are he seems toplay over things and feeltoo mechanical, not enough feel....or something.

He was quite a sensation way back in 1991.
I have two albums; the first one (with "sign of the storm") an the second one (picture of a thousand faces) with the excelent Beatles cover "I want you".

I do tend to agree with you about Moore, but I have been a fan since his Coliseum II & Thin Lizzy days. He has an amazing tone & vibrato, his singing is tolerable to me.

Post by: uwe on March 04, 2009, 07:56:21 AM
Moore's tone is always a little too (in)tense for me, it's like he tries too hard as opposed to not meaning it. I'm sure he's sincere in his love for the blues, but he lacks a certain looseness other Brit blues ROCK guitarists have for me like the already mentioned Rory Galllagher or the miraculously hitherto unmentioned Alvin Lee (there is more to him than just the cocaine fuelled hypher-charged Woodstock "I'm going home" performance). Rory was earthy, Alvin playful, Moore is just too concentrated, like Al di Meola doing a 12 bar.

General observation: US blues rock guitarists generally don't have an issue with sounding loose - you guys can do that well.

Gary Moore ROCKS on that vid of Red House! Wow
Johnny Winter WAS outstanding in his prime.

Freddie King was the first Axman to play at the Glendale Civic Auditorium.
He announced that between songs & he said it was the first time he ever played for young people.
I was one of those younguns---ol' Terr was only 15. It was 1968. The mayor's son who went by Prince (way before the Purple Rain guy) had a band called Bad Luck & Trouble who played the Blues, & his specialty was Elvin Bishop songs--Sweet Potato & Drunk Again.

Here's Freddie on tv doin' a 2 & a half minute Hideaway:

Now Heeeere's Johnny! (just for Barkless) doin' an almost 9 minute version of Hideaway:

Thanks for that clip. I saw Johnny Winter about 5 or more years ago at a little bar. Only about 40 people showed up. The band had to almost carry him up on stage, guided by a laser pointer for Johnny. They sat him on a stool and had to put the guitars on him. He could barely sing he was so messed up. This was with his old manager who kept him drugged.

Funny part was he could still play his arse off. Just amazing guitarist even in that condition.

Another one of my favorites is Jon Amor.

His first solo album -after The Hoax split- is a classic (at least in my point of view it is)
It combines vintagy Texas blues with modern ingredients such as looping and sampling.
It appeared to be too renewing for the ultra conservative blues audience.

So...Willie Dixon is surely the King of the ol' Black Bassmen Bluesmen Singer/Songwriter Band Leaders.
He may be the winner by default. Are there any others?

I reckon Jack Bruce is the King of the Rockin' White Bassmen Bluesmen Singer/Songwriter Band Leaders.
Some may say he wasn't the leader, but if you look at CREAM as a competition (there's that word again) then you can see that Jack was in the LEAD & therefore the leader with the most Singer/Songwriter credits.
Some will say CREAM is more of a ROCK band than a Blues band...but no one can deny the predominance of  Blues in their catalog & the fact that their best moments were their Blues JAMS--most notably Wilie Dixon's Spoonful & their wonderful rendition of Howling Wolf's Sitting On Top of the World!!

Gotta LOVE the Deep Down in the Depths BASS on the LIVE version from Goodbye:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDU_EHP0yl8

...& Jack's great vocal!

James Dewar is an amazing Bassman Bluesman Singer too:

Did he write too? Gotta learn all about him. He fokken ROCKED!!!

the short answer is blues music 'to me' is without the rock music influence/bombast. not the other way around. to each his own, though.

the same argument could be made for jazz vs. jazz fusion. this could get ugly. ;)

What I meant with that question is: Who cares? As long as it's cool music I can enjoy listening to (or playing it myself) it's fine with me.

I play in a band called Superfloor. We started out as a cover band doing lots of SRV, Jimi and ZZ Top etc.
We got booked by Blues clubs, we got airplay on Blues shows and people called us a Blues band.

When the band got to the stage where we started writing our own stuff, the direction shifted somewhat towards more rock orientated music. With ingredients of Hard Rock, Blues and Soul. Because you get inspired by what you love.

Nowadays when we do gigs there's always a few people in the audience complaining that "this has nothing to do with Blues".
So what?! Why does it have to be strictly Blues? And -again- what is Blues?

To me it's everything between Robert Johnson and -for example- Gov't Mule.
But I don't care if someone else tells me Gov't Mule is not Blues.

"The Blues ain't what you're singing, the Blues is what I feel." Buddy Guy.

The 12 bar form using the I - IV - V chords that is basic to the blues can be found in all types of music.

The song "Crossroads" as done by Robert Johnson is Blues, by Cream it's Rock, by Buckwheat Zydeco it's Zydeco, Acousticure does it Bluegrass.

I'm sure some one can define it in scientific terms (Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues)) but the blues is what you feel.

Truth!  A big percentage of popular music is 1-4-5 chords.  And Crossroads is a perfect example of a number that changed personas when it went from one artist to the next.  I've often wondered if Robert Johnson has been spinning like a lathe ever since Cream released their version...I had NO clue it was originally a blues tune until a couple of years ago when it wsa pointed out on the NPR show American Routes, which is a fantastic program.

Anyone else like Eric Sardinas? Saw him open for Johnny Winter a coupla years ago.
He also opened for Vai one of the times I saw Vai. He's on Vai's Favoured Nations label.
He had the illustrious Eddie Kramer helping him on his Black Pearls album. Good stuff!

I've been listening to Kenny Wayne Shepherd more than anyone these days.
He's playing the House o' Blues Sunset's 15th Anniversary on April 18th.
That's my fav club & I've seen lots of great bands there & had good times.
Hopin' to see Dan Akroyd there finally! ...& maybe meet him.

Allow me to present Blues Image from Tampa/Miami.  YouTube is missing their best self-titled album that preceded 'Ride Captain Ride'.  Tracks like 'Take Me to the Sunrise',
Leavin My Troubles Behind', and 'Reality Does Not Inspire" combine blues, Cuban rhythms, and rock  with a prominent Hammond B3 and P-bass pulse. Played those tracks with a blues-rock band in 1973-74 that covered most of the Allman Brothers catalog, James Gang, etc.

That's about how I would sum myself up ;D.
I'm not good enough to pull off a steady diet of jazz , nor would I really want to. I'm not self indulgent enough for a steady diet of rock or fusion . So,  I suppose that would make me a blues bass player too ;).
