Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Cool Rics on eBay / Reverb / Craigslist

I considered putting in an order at the time .
One of my regrets .

Likewise, I missed by minutes, one being sold in Hawaii at "retail" for $1800 plus shipping.

Attached (hopefully) are a few shots from a Factory tour in September 2005, the gentleman in the picture hand carved each Lemmy individually, so, no two are alike.
He was the last full time Luthier employed at Rickenbacker and was previously building Rickenbacker Acoustics

The Ric-Boutique now has the new 4003-V2 Tailpice and bridge for sale, I ordered mine this morning to replace a nasty Badass bridge on my 73-Fretless  :)

I'll keep the thread updated on installation and setup

Hi,
I agree with your comments, and, the Fireglo is darker than on my 2 73's and my 72.
In all I've 6 Fireglo Rics,  ranging from 1972-4001 through to my 2015-4003s, this one is darker than all of mine, and, just about any other Fireglo I've seen over the years.

That said, John Hall has told me the Fireglo is by far he hardest of all the Rickenbacker colours to try to accurately capture, even for professional photographers, so, this could be just the light and circumstances that the pictures were taken in.

Even though this is darker it is nicely uniform and is well blended, not like the "Clown Glo" examples of the late 90's early 2k's.  Since each instrument is colored by hand it produces finished that are not identical which is one of the things I like about Fireglo, and the various "Burst" colours that have been produced over the years, this a testimony to the hand finishing that goes into all Rickenbackers.

That's the guy who can play any Ric he wants and if it doesn't exist he can have one built for him. And he chose a Shadow. Just sayin' ;-)

Mine isn't mint, has some signs of use, so I'm not afraid to take it out.

He probably couldn't find a Fireglo at the time   :P

Yeah, "slightly."

Be skeptical of low-priced "Rickenbackers" coming out of China. What you get is not what you see. This one is clearly a real V63 in the photos, but that's likely not the one you'll get for that money.

Never mind China ....
Be skeptical of low priced Rickenbackers in general !

2002 S/5 FG, neither a Rath conversion nor the strange current model. $3.5K BIN

A Factory 5 ?, very nice, pricey, but nice.

I've a "Rath 4-5 Conversion" which I'll probably be putting up for sale soon, just can't wrap my head (and fingers) round 5+ string basses, 4-strings, 4-fingers, not a coincidence I think.

Interesting "surely you're joking" priced ($8,213.81)  1972 4001 on Reverb, full of anomalies:
  • It has wider neck pickup spacing found after March-April 73
  • Smaller triangular inlays, again post March-April 73
  • Not Crushed Pearl or Full Width
  • 72 Would have Fulll Width & Crushed Pearl
  • The Bridge pickup surround is square cornered
  • 72&73's both had rounded corners.
  • It does have Chequered Binding
  • It does have a Split Bridge

Anyone have any ideas on this ???

I agree.

I'm not sure it'd be Paul; technically this is not a Rickenbacker bass, it's a one off copy based on a 4005'sh body with a number of non-Rickenbacker parts.

Given Paul's working relationship with Rickenbacker I'm not sure he'd risk that by creating this.

That said, it's a very nice bass and had I saw it I'd have gone after it. There is still room IMHO for a hollow body Ric in the catalogue

The gentleman carving the Lemmy's was in fact Rickenbcker's last full time Luthier, he'd previously been finishing off the last of the Ric hollow body acoustics.

He spent a fair time with us showing us how he approached each individual wing and hw each one differed based on the grain and pattern of the Walnut.

You're right, the other is indeed the Dumpster.

Here's two more ....
John Hall with Lemmy's actual bass which was in for a tune up
And
The Last of the Lemmy Walnut Wings ...

The guy in the Black is ... Me

Hi All,
Back in August 2005, Rickenbacker Forum Members held a weekend long SoCalCon in Orange County. As part of that weekend a few of us on the Friday before the meeting were privileged to be given a tour of the Factory by John Hall.

I've quite a few unique pictures from that tour, including the Factory and the Museum.

As soon as I can figure out how to post said pictures I'll upload them.

Yep, an old member there, known as a Fireglo fanatic.

Hi All,
New to this Forum, I did indeed win the lovely 1972 shown earlier in this post , I'd previously bought a really nice Mapleglo v63  from the same seller, so I knew he was decent to deal with.

I'm on the hunt for a period correct Bridge Pickup.

And, guilty as charged, I am indeed a Fireglo Fanatic ... I've been playing Rics (mostly Fireglo's), almost exclusively since 1973.
