Not all of the new album is as "in your face", almost abrasive, it has very melodic parts too:

I've outgrown that type of bass sound (I used to die for it in the eighties), but I find it comforting that in an age where everything is honed to death to sound "nice", someone still has the guts to play with a tone like that.

Oh, btw, another new track, I guess approaching AOR (Alex Lifeson has both The Byrds and U2 influences down pat!) in Rush's angular own little musical world.

I've only heard the new album once so far, my first impression is that the last one was more immediately accessible and that this one "progs out" more, but they are certainly alive and kicking Canucks on it.

Nice. The vocals do not sound very Geddy (High pitched falsetto), more normal sounding. Lots of echo in the mix. Will have buy & listen further.

It's disheartening how Dave hasn't posted something supportive here yet.  :-\

Still waiting for Amazon to deliver this.  :-\

I know what you mean about the tone. Producers have done a good job of snuffing out anything resembling personality in the bass department over the past decade. Long live Geddy Lee!  ;)

My tone lately (Ric 4003S with HB1 humbuckers through a Sadowsky pre) has been somewhere between A Farewell to Kings and Moving Pictures, combined with a "normal" bass tone. Lots of lows...

Have I ever criticized Rush? I don't think so. Just because their music doesn't appeal to me doesn't mean I hate them. They seem to do things their own way regardless of what's in fashion. Nothing wrong with that.

I prefer their lives than their studio works, they have a (weird) sence of humor. That snakes and arrows live with the roasting chickens on the background, omg is it typical canadian humor? :P

Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.

I think the two posted songs are OK, but not up to the level of their previous work.  Sometimes, it's hard to top oneself after several mega hits and great song writing.  It's tough to keep the momentum up over time!

After listening to some of the material-

The bass is too high in the mix, mixed below the guitar for the most part. My son even commented on that it was distracting.

Back in the days of herb, I always thought that Rush mixes made more sense when stoned.  My indie pop band had a couple of true Rush fanatics, and even they said that Vapor Trails was painful to listen to.

On a side note, I have two personal ties in the video of Beyond The Lighted Stage.  First is a poster of Rush and Kiss at Fremd High School in Palatine, IL.  I went to that show.  Kiss were great, and Rush actually sucked.  Second, during an interview scene, they talk about smaller venues during the Caress of Steel tour, and someone makes the comment of "backwater towns like Battle Creek".  That was the show I opened for them.  They were pretty nice guys, and considerate of the opening act - they sent over half a deli tray for us.

I like it, I also like where the bass sits in the mix. I have a soft spot for RUSH, I don't like everything they have done but they certainly carved their own path. And how many years with he same line up? That alone gets my respect!

Until now your silence was damning enough! "They seem to do things their own way regardless of what's in fashion." sums the band up very well though.

My father's day prezzie from the daughter... already played it too many times... ;D

There's a nice package that comes with "the ultimate sleeve notes", which is the one I was given... being a full-concept piece, I thought it a nice touch to set the hands of the clock just... so... for the faithful... ;D

Hmm... long road trip in the morning... what to play...? what to play...?
