Not anime, but definitely a theme song:

I wouldn't leave it as is unless I could even out the color difference with that dark piece on the lower bout. Beside the point anyway since you've already decided to veneer it. But I really can't blame Gibson for the dark non-matching piece. That's exactly why it was chosen for a solid color finish.

Re your sanding efforts and Gibson nitro durability, we really don't know all the details of what they use. Could be nitro color coats over an oil- or epoxy-based sealer. Could still be a nitro sealer, but the formulas have changed over the years.

I don't have any advice to give, but I sure hope it turns up soon.

I'd volunteer to interview him anytime!

Sue him for failing to have an email, and get your interview when you bring him in for a deposition.

The Outpost Cafe / A new sensation...in 1934
« on: January 16, 2008, 12:23:44 PM »
Awhile back I discovered that someone has set up a blog with scans of old articles from Modern Mechanix and Popular Science magazines. I've been reading it fairly often. Great stuff, including some bizarre inventions and others that were unheard of but now we take for granted.

Take a look at this entry from today: Outdoor Grill For Barbecues. A novel idea 74 years ago. Too bad this idea never caught on.  ;) :D

The homepage is here.

Very nice. A more Gibson-like finish than Gibson actually used on them.

Did these pickups come from the guy in Kalamazoo selling all those NOS parts?

I don't think his fans have forgotten his talent, but sometimes a person's other actions lead people to say "okay, no more." The man is just divorced from reality in many ways.

I've seen a couple of Hondo copies but they were solidbodies in the shape of a Dano Longhorn. Did Hondo make a copy with Dano-type construction?

Well said. It's great having stuff and enjoying it (and yapping about it online) and you wouldn't want to lose your possessions, but there's more to life than that.

Bob Reed of the Trashmen played a Longhorn on Surfin' Bird and their other early recordings. The band still plays occasionally and Reed is still bassist but I have no idea what he uses today.

I was in high school back then, and nobody I knew wanted one. We wanted Gibsons, Fenders or Gretsches. But Dano and Silvertone guitars and basses have certainly been used a lot over the years. It's the tone that counts, even if they are primitive.

Gibson Basses / Re: How do I record my NR?
« on: January 15, 2008, 05:05:10 PM »
I'm planning on (finally) buying some minimal recording gear this year, a USB interface and mic. The big online retailers will offer packages with an interface and a mic or two, like this one from Music123 (now a sister company to MF). The interfaces usually come with recording software.

I know it's a long way from a pro studio setup but something like this should serve my needs.

Yeah, this is obviously an extension of the EB-3ish Jack Bruce Signature concept. I do remember that Jack said they hadn't got it quite right, can't remember if he was referring to the electronics. That prototype did have MEC electronics of some sort.

I agree about the Framus Star reference.

Oh yeah! I forgot about those short scale double cuts. The USA models are a little more expensive.

A little? Yeah, just ever so slightly. :)

But they are reasonable compared to Gibson's custom shop.

The owner of our local music store here has also been the Kaman rep for the territory. He's had some really nice Hamer Custom Shop guitars in his store from time to time, even though most of his electric guitar and bass stock is beginner level stuff. Since FMIC completed its purchase of Kaman on 12/31, I'll have to find out what changes are in store for him.
