I just saw this documentary about this band called Death. They were one of, if not the first, Punk band started in 1971. They were three African American brothers who lived in Detroit. They became a cult classic 20 years later. Pretty cool, but sad documentary about a person (David Hackney) who refused to compromise. They have finally got their recognition 35 years later. Unfortunately David, who was the visionary /guitarist of the band never got top see their recognition.
Nice bass work, he used a Ric

I interviewed them when the doc was screened at the Dutch documentary festival IDFA. The played and the film was screened. Cool band, cool guys, nice CDs!!

The song "Keep on knocking" really reminds me of the La La Lies, grand funk and thin Lizzie.

Damn, that song is awesome!

I saw the same documentary, what a story! The name Death wouldn't even raise a eyebrow today.
-
True, but I tried telling some people about them and as soon as you tell them the name they kind of say Oh, very hestitantly. It's not a positive name unless your a metal band , which if you read reviews on amazon or ITunes some people complain about how they're not metal.
-
I suppose Grateful Dead is at least a bit more user friendly...?
-
I know bands play around with names, but they still have connotations. Death is a TERRIBLE name unless you're trying to attrack a Goth/Metal/Doom/Darkness crowd.
I'd never even bother to listen to a number by a band with that name.
Puts me in mind of the Saturday Night Live "Mangeled Baby Ducks" skit. "With a name like Mangled Baby Ducks, it must be fantastic!"

One band I really love and have seen only twice is Dusty Booze and the Baby Haters. They are awesome.

I just checked ebay and their LP was reissued on Drag City records on LP's and CD's in 2009. I'm thinking of buying one, pretty good stuff.
-
I really enjoy their first Drag City release and I saw them live once. They were very good live too.
Intriguing story behind the band and it's great that 2/3 of them at least were able to see some accolade from their music.

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought the record & have the documentary ready to roll in my queue.
Nice!

I heard about these dudes a while ago - was the record re-pressed, I thought it was sold out or I woulda grabbed one?

Mine shipped today. Let's reconvene over a beer & review later...

Just watched the documentary....what a fascinating story! And the records is really amazing, so very ahead of their time.
-
They were really tight and certainly not what I expected.

Ironically, the metal band Death is ALSO defunct for the same reason. Chuck Schuldiner died of brain cancer in 2001 after founding THAT "Death" in 1983, the same year as Metallica's first album. Unlike the plethora of imitators that followed, it WAS a good band, too. I knew there was a punk Death, but didn't know it was black guys. Good stuff, too.

great documentary, great story and most of all great songs.
