Bass Amps & Effects / Tech 21 VT Bass (rack)
« on: October 26, 2013, 01:42:02 AM »
Bought one midweek and had a three hour jam with it on Thursday.  Very nice.  I've been running a Sansamp Bass Driver for a few years and the VTB is like it's angry big brother.

Gibson Basses / Greco Thunderbird
« on: October 16, 2013, 05:56:39 AM »
I've been trawling through some threads about Greco TBs; generally everything seems positive.  Anyhow, one has come up on Basschat/UK (http://basschat.co.uk/topic/214884-fs-greco-thunderbird-price-drop/)...I've contacted the buyer about a possible trade (I'm looking to move an unused Waterstone TP12).

You'll see from the link that the bass itself looks a tad trashed (chewed by a dog springs to mind), and (to my eyes) the scratchplate looks too big.  I'm between a rock and a hard place here...I don't mind moving the Waterstone, but is the Greco junk?  I suppose if it's good enough, I could look at refinishing it to a non standard colour perhaps...money I wouldn't necessarily throw at an Epiphone.

So, how does it compare?  Is it a close facsimilie to a Gibson?  All the geometry the same etc.  Mark?

Gibson Basses / 2013 Thunderbird NR
« on: October 02, 2013, 10:14:31 AM »
Just wanted to post this up.  Despite my love for the 'bird, I would be the first to admit I was somewhat underwhelmed by the NR reissue.  So, (as probably a lot of you guys are doing), mine's undergone a few mods.

Three point bridge (shocking as usual) replaced with a Hipshot Supertone.  Dunlop Straploks.  The initial tone was very muddy, so the pots have been replaced/upgraded and lined up in a row.  The final piece is an off-white pick guard which arrived today.  The white one was horribly bright and would have taken an age to tone down (it been sitting in a window in full sunlight all summer and nada).

Anyhow, so here it is.  Oh, if I can add something else, Elixir Nanoweb strings.  Do they ever wear out?  Best £30 I've spent in a long time!

The Outpost Cafe / A Song for Christmas...
« on: July 31, 2013, 01:42:20 PM »
Strange one...have spent the last few evenings tracking a punky tune (Christmastime Has Come To Town) for a Christmas compilation CD that my band is going to be on.  It's a weird thing trying to get yourself in a seasonal psyche when it's nearly August, 80 degrees outside in sunny ol' England and two of the band are in Italy getting a tan.

For now I'm happy with the results; lots of sleigh bells, yo-ho-hos, snow, turkey and mistletoe.  Woop!

Gibson Basses / Gibson TBs stock colours.
« on: July 13, 2013, 04:12:32 AM »
Morning.
My Italian friend Crem (who graces these pages periodically and plays for the quite amazing Milano trio 'The Full Treble'), is currently sporting a Sapphire Blue TB...he tells me it was a limited run (200?) for the Japanese market that his girlfriend found for him (lucky guy, eh?).  See the bass below.  Needless to say there isn't anything on the web about this model (much the same as my beloved Gothic TBH).

It got me thinking about solid stock finishes.  I've seen photos of the red Twiggy Ramierez TB which may (or may not) have been a one off demo model, obviously Crem's blue one, the new anniversary model.  Black, white/ivory aside, what other colours were there?  Limited editions/whatever.  Anyone got any under the bed originals they'd care to add to this thread?  It seems Epiphone players are better served on the finish front!

Cheers
Paul

Gibson Basses / Question for new NR Thunderbird owner(s)
« on: March 06, 2013, 06:37:34 AM »
Quick question.

While I'm loving the overall feel of the new non-reverse, I am a tad disappointed with the sound.  Considering it shares the same pickups/circuitry/heritage as the reverse models, by comparison I'm finding the output [edit] to be muddy.  I have three other TBs of various vintage all of which have a much wider tonal range.

Anyone experiencing the same?

Cheers

Gibson Basses / Nikki Sixx
« on: January 10, 2013, 12:11:13 PM »
Not sure whether it's pertinent to post this here, but seeing as how he's a longtime TB user.  He's got a new Signature model coming along.  (This was posted to his Twitter/FB feed.)  Any speculation who he's signed up with?

Gibson Basses / It's all about the new stuff...
« on: November 09, 2012, 02:26:51 PM »
The last couple of years have been quite cathartic for me from a bass perspective.  I'm in a pop/punky band that I love (Nancy Johnson...check 'em out at www.nancyjohnson.co.uk) and my desire for Thunderbirds had been all but satiated.

Almost two years ago to the day I landed a white TB, swiftly followed by a super rare Hamer FBIV.  This summer following a clearout of a Bongo and a Lakland DJ5, I landed a lovely black TB and had funds enough to order one of the NR reissues.  Today though I've landed my holy grail in a minty TB Gothic.

It was Uwe that set me on my way here answering some questions about the model and when one came on sale over here in the UK, I landed it for a not unreasonable for the UK price of £900/$1430 and collect it Sunday morning.  Woop!

Pictures to follow!

Gibson Basses / BaCHbirds....
« on: September 22, 2012, 02:08:02 AM »
Quick couple of questions to any owners and anyone who has modded them.  I have a Lakland Skyline DJ5 that I'm thinking about moving on and for that swag, I could well bag three guitars (I'm thinking as I now have a pair of Gibson TBs, maybe give a punt to one of the new Epiphones, plus an Epiphone Phant-o-matic, and a Bach as a project).

OK, here goes my questions/concerns.

I guess first off, are the stock models off the shelf any good? You know, are they playable and not needing major surgery.

Side by side with a non-reverse is the BaCH a decent enough facsimile?  Accurate dimensions etc.

Second up, mods.  Looking at their website, I like the chrome hardware, but I'm really not a fan of the look of those pickups...what are you guys swapping out?  Also, where does one procure a scratchplate?

Also, I've seen this thread a couple of time :http://www.hillscloud.com/2011/06/refinishing-a-thunderbird-bass/

Thanks

Gibson Basses / New arrival.
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:19:44 PM »
While I'm some way off catching up with Mark, my new baby arrived today.  Picked up an old black Thunderbird.  It needs a little TLC, but it was a decent price...the barrel-jack is shot and I honestly forgot how Dickensian those three point bridges are, so there's a Hipshot Supertone winging it's way to me as well.

Woop.

Gibson Basses / Gibson Thunderbird Gothic
« on: August 02, 2012, 10:42:00 AM »
Hi
First post here, just wanted to say hello from the UK.  Main bass is a sweet creamy/white Thunderbird, just love it.  #2 is Hamer FBIV in black.  I'm kind of desperate to find a black T-Bird as well (funds waiting!  ;D)

Quick question.  Gibson Thunderbird Gothics.  I've seen a few photos of these online, although it really has to said that I wasn't aware they existed until recently although I'm now fairly certain I saw one in Mannys/GC in September 2009.  Can anyone shoot me a bit more information?  Numbers etc.  Do they ever come up for sale?

Cheers and thanks!
Best
Paul
