Gibson Basses / Re: Assault with battery
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:31:10 AM »
Everybody knows active is better than passive. That guy just found an easy and cheap way to make it so, right? And he just wants to share it with the world, right? And we are all just a bunch of jerks because we couldn't think of it first, right? RIGHT?!?!
 ??? ??? ???

I've just finished building a SG Bass. Should I try this little "improvement" before shipping the bass to the guy who ordered it?

What harm could it do...  :o

I think the shield is somewhat connected with the ground wire. Maybe inside the metal cover both shield and ground wire (black) are welded together with the cover. That would explain why connecting the shield with a grounded pot kills the sound, because you are actually grounding the reversed hot wire (black) since black and shield are connected together.
It also explain why touching the metal cover creates a buzz, simply becasue it means you are actually touching the hot wire (black) that is connected with the actuall cover.

To be sure about it, disconnect both wires and shield, and if you have a multimeter you can measure the original ground wire (black) and shield to test if there's a short. If you don't have a multimeter you can just swap the black wire with the shield. Meaning you have to disconnect the black and swap for the shield. If it works the same, then it means that ground wire (black) and shield are connected together inside the cover.
If that's the case, then you have to take the pickup apart and swap the wires inside the cover.

I don't know if you noticed but, from the pictures, I can see that the single pup has only 19 frets, as the double pup is 20 frets.

It's not a bad thing that it's available in all colours... (as long as it's cherry red!!)  >:(

I'm still waiting on the good folks from BaCH to finally come up with their EB2/Rivoli tribute (both long and short scale ones)

Here's a video with the prototype.
Lots of bass...  :o  On stage I hardly heard it.  :-[

Cool

Lots of bass, and a whole lotta neck too. That is a long neck, eh?

Quick! Somebody call 7ender HQ! They are missing a great endorsement oportunity...

I wonder... what if it was a vintage T-Bird on his hands instead?  :o
Things people would've been saying here...

I think it felt surprisingly light for it's size. About 4 kilograms maybe?

That would be just perfect. To me, 4kg is about right for a bass.

I like the guitar size body too, but just with the Warwick bridge/anchor combination. The standard stopbar being that close to the body edge just doesn't appeal too much to me, the Warwick anchor looked much better close to the edge. A Alembic bridge/anchor would've looked even better.

The position of the stopbar tailpiece on the oversized body looks just perfect to me though.

Until we can see it next to standard body, it's hard to tell. May be longer and wider.

Quick Photoshop to give an idea. It seems to be really just a simple oversizing, maybe just reprograming the CNC machine.

Gibson Basses / 60s Rivoli reissue on the way?
« on: April 07, 2011, 12:46:53 PM »
Considering the recent Wilshire historycal collection reissue, maybe we can hope...

We Recently Acquired This Beautiful Rivoli

One of the most sought after vintage Epiphone basses is the 60s era Rivoli. We recently acquired this beautiful 1967 model and our R&D department is currently reviewing every detail of this iconic Epiphone piece for a possible re-issue. If it happens, I know a lot of bass players will be very happy!

So Uwe, are you saying that bigger is better?  All the girls I've known always told me that size didn't matter.  8)

That is a euphemism... girls say that when their current partner isn't really what they want... and, yeah, I heard that one before...  :-\

As for the LP Bass, I'm thinking bigger LOOKS better!

Notice he missed the line it was drawn by 2 milimiters...

I disambled a Epi LP Special guitar neck that had this type of truss rod too. It was a made in Indonesia one.

Oh seriously, every builder you've met?
Well I have never seen it and that's what counts for me.
It's not just because it goes well with the design. I wanted to come up with a solution for the weakest point on mahogany necks with an angled headstock. Ususally there just is not enough wood left because of the trussrod cavity. They're very vulnerable at that spot.

I wasn't considering the functionality issue, but you are right. Considering the well know problems of Gibson's angled heads on mahogany necks, I understand your idea to set the truss rod adjustment on the body end of the neck.
And now that I'm having a better look at your design, I see it is actually a genius idea. Because you wanted the neck pickup to be placed right at the end of the fretboard, so if it had a aditional cover beyond the end of the FB then it would've pushed the pickup further from the Mud-zone you were after.
Kuddos on a great idea considering functionality and aesthetic design .

Sorry for the initial bashing on your idea. But I really meant when I said all builders I met have thought of the idea. At least the ones I met and talked to personally.
