Title: So I've ordered a Mike Lull JAXT4...
Post by: planetgaffnet on May 25, 2015, 02:06:15 AM
Accumulated too many basses, sold a couple, ordered a Lull.  Call it a midlife crisis if you want.  Cheaper than a Harley.

Is the bigger body a compensation...? bit like a sports-car hood...?

(fascinating... what colour...?)

Sounds like a reasonable mid-life crisis purchase to me

I've played a couple at Mike's shop, including one of Jeff's personal basses, I know you won't be disappointed, the level of craftsmanship and care in his basses is fantastic - Congratulations!

I'm 6'4"...maybe the oversized body (on the bass) will make it look normal on me!!

I'm getting the satin black one.

Nice. Not a Harley, but a Lull won't conk out by the side of the road.

Well, it's all paid for (yikes), UK supplier says it'll be here in around two weeks.  I'm actually a bit excited.  I don't really get excited about anything anymore, so a little 'weeee' on my part.

There doesn't seem to be many pics online of these, so I'll rectify that when it gets delivered.

OK yes, I admit there's a few photos on the Lull page, but scant few of the bass in the hands of mortals or reclining on sofas.

I'm sure there are some. If the artists on his site were the only ones he had sold (or given) these to, he wouldn't still be offering it.

Curious what it weighs in at?

Post a review of it when it arrives!

That bass is pretty much a morphing of a TBird and a Hamer Ament B12A with the big body.

When it arrives, I will do everything.  It's an expensive blind buy for me...one thing I'm especially interested to see how much bigger 20% is over a regular Thunderbird.

I would say one other thing here, one of the basses I sold to finance this was a 2013 Rickenbacker 4003.  I'd wanted a Rick for ages, but the experience wasn't great...tone and playability were fine, however it left the house four times in about a year; two rehearsals and two gigs.  At the gigs, I caught someone trying to lift it on both occasions, the old, 'Oh, I thought this was our bassists.' gag on the first one and the second time some bloke just sauntered into the gear area and had picked up the bass (in it's case).

I'm kind of hoping that with the Lull, people won't actually know what it is.  I guess as they're a lot more of a low-profile manufacturer (and consequently less well known), there'll be less inclination for someone to try and get their hands on it.  Plus it comes in a big orange f*ck-off hard case, so should be a bit more visible.

All Lull's stuff is manufactured and finished by outside vendors, he assembles and sets them up.   So keeping everything in the catalog/on the website really doesn't cost anything once the development work is done.  Maybe a few incidentals like pick guards have to be ordered more than one piece at a time.

I didn't realize that. Similar to the way Sadowsky works.

Here you go.  Side by side comparison.

I'm pretty pleased it has to be said, however there's a little issue on the bridge pickup that's (hopefully) being addressed today.  Pickup is noiseless until you play a note and there's a little crackling as the note decays.  My tech guy says it's probably a grounding issue or a dry solder joint.  He's sorted out far worse previously, so I trust his judgment.

Otherwise, it's great.  Balances nicely, pickups sound nice clean or effected.  The body is a bit bigger, but to me not significantly so.  I'm a big bloke, so it probably looks normal.  Heh.  I like the forearm bout chamfer...so used to the Gibson slab, so no more bruises.  The reverse headstock will take a bit of getting used to.  Stock set up had the action a tad high, so dropped the bridge a couple of mm both sides to get a bit of rattle.

Nice... ;)
