Probably around 2010-11 on the T.V. Yellow. Five were made (supposedly). Never got the "T.V." reference. What's yellow got to do with T.V.?

I sent him a correction. He has listed it as a 4001C64S, but it is not the S version (which has rounded-off body horns).

Looks like my response was posted at the same time as mc2NY's. Wish I had received the nice shot that he posted of the rediscovered Kirkland bass for use in the book. The vendor sent only a few shots of it sitting in the case, and that's all I had to use in the book.  :-\ Fortunately, I have photos of a couple of hundred more Rick basses to fill the pages, several from readers of this forum!

What piqued my interest again was a group of photos taken by a woman at the Louisiana Hayride 55-60 years ago and posted to FB by her son. There was a photo of Bob Luman with James Kirkland playing that Ric 4000 instead of the enormous upright he was usually seen with. I started poking around. Looked at Kirkland's FB page, and there's a pic of him playing the Ric with Ricky Nelson. I had seen James Burton playing a Ric in Ricky's band before (possibly a 381) but not Kirkland.  Also, his page includes a promo pic of Ricky playing a Ric flat top acoustic.

Dave, Nelson's band was equipped with Ricks at one point, probably as promotional gifts. It appears that Kirkland's bass may have been a "two-tone brown," maybe an early version of what became known as "Autumnglo." When Kirkland went over to the Blue Boys, the bass was painted powder blue to match the Ricks the other band members had (also possibly promotional gifts) and there's a oft-published staged shot of Reeves and the Blue Boys with these guitars and even powder-blue-grilled Rickenbacker amps in my book (and many other places). The story of Kirkland and what happened to that old Rick bass is in the book, too. The second edition coming this summer has a recent picture of the bass as it surfaced a couple of years ago at a guitar shop and it was quickly scooped up by a noted collector who specializes in early Rickenbacker basses. It may never be seen again.  :-\

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Limited Edition 4003JPS - Jetglo Pearlstar

Walnut body. Is it possible that they painted over less-than-perfect-grain SW's - like they did with some C64's?

Still, very nice.

Yes, the Jetglo Pearlstars are 4003SW instruments with the sparkly pearl gloss black finish over a filler/sealer coat. Mirrored pick guard and laser-etched truss rod cover and chrome metal knobs. Ten were produced for Sweetwater. I think you have to email or call for price. I'm sure it will be more than the usual price for an SW.

According to John Hall in an interview for the book, he states: " . . . neither African rosewood (bubinga) nor Caribbean rosewood (chechen) are true rosewoods in the Dalbergia family."

I don't know from family or genus when it comes to this stuff, but it doesn't matter. I can't imagine RIC using any wood that is from an endangered source.

I can't confirm the numbers ("only two"), but this and the lefty 4005/6 are the only ones I've seen photos of. Can't confirm the "late" finishing. This Mapleglo 4005 was/is owned by Peter Levett in the U.K. and although a photo I have of it was not used in the book, it may show up in a second edition.

Quite possibly the only lefty 4003SPC Tuxedo.

Nah. Don't need the bass, but do need the photos. I requested same from the seller. Hope they can provide. Nice catch, Ilan!

I messaged the seller with suggested corrections. It's a 4001 in yellowed white, not a 4003 Mapleglo. And of course all the pickup stuff is not anywhere near standard. I suggested value of $1200-$1600 and that $6gs was "optimistic."

And exclusive among Rick basses, the 2050 has the gold-plated Schaller tuners with the "Rickenbacker" brand name embossed on the baseplate. The 2050 was the bass model I had the hardest time finding photos for the book. Pretty rare. The trimmed-down 2030 was much more easy to find.

"Clownglo" appeared mostly on early ought instruments (e.g. 2003). They tend to look worse in photos than in real life. I've heard it said that some digital cameras have a tough time reproducing reds and can't accurately capture subtleties in the red spectrum - like it thinks that something is totally red or it's not; no shades of red. Certainly "clownglo" happened, but mercifully is a thing of the past.

The story of "Autumnglo," "Walnut," and "Brown" is confusing and apparently changed at least a few times back in the '70s and '80s. Don't know that there was ever a bass in that "Brown" matte finish, but for a while "Autumnglo" was made with a semimatte clear coat while the same color with a gloss coat was considered "Walnut." The "Brown" matte overall finish appears to have been applied to a few models of guitars, but not to any basses that I've seen. The overall, glossy, non-burst Walnut ones that I've seen so far appear to be from '74 and early '75. Much more in the book.
