Title: My Thunderbird by Mike Lull!
Post by: TBird1958 on March 29, 2009, 11:46:54 PM

At long last my LullBird is done!
I picked it up from Mike on Friday afternoon before going out for the eve with my bandmate Ginger, so I didn't get a chance to play it until Saturday night's rehearsal with the band, it was really hard to go to work when I just wanted to be at home playing that bass!..............All can say is WoW! it's so nicely made, Mike's attention to quality just really shows in every detail. I really love the pick up, the tone is aggressive with a pick and it felt like fit in the mix with the band really well. I guess all of you that have 60's Birds know the sound, I can definately say I'll be getting at least one set of the pick ups to retro fit my Nikki Bird, they just sound so fantastic.... :)

Here's a shot of the body in pretty strong afternoon sunlight, the shadow across the body is from a window pane and if you notice, it curves a bit where the upper bout has a nice arm carve. I need to note here that it was my original intention to use Scott Dasson's bridge on this bass, but because it's specifcally designed to fit the original Gibson Mike had trouble making it work, so we opted to use his instead. I'll likely be using mine for my Greco Thunderbird II now.

And a shot of the back showing the tummy cut ( I don't need that, no tummy on this girl!) the shaped neck heel and a nice cut on the backside of the lower bout to give better upper fret access.

Heres a shot of the upper bout, you can see both the arm carve and the tummy cut.

Of course it wouldn't be one of my basses without a shot posed by the Subaru...........

As I said I was on my way out for the evening when I picked it up from Mike's shop, so I was dressed appropriately. Mike was a really good sport! he took this shot  ;)
As you can see the color has shifted in this pic because of the poor fluorescent lighting........gotta talk to him about that

That colour is amazing Mark. Does it change in different light as much as it seems to in the pics? (I really like paint jobs that do that) Or is it the pics telling fibs? The pearloid pick guard sets it off nicely. Also, was it your choice or Mikes for the bolt on neck?

Great bass Mark. It turned out so cool. Orange you glad you ordered it as a one pup bass?

Love the headstock shape. Do all Lull birds have the rear cut aways?

Very nice. I like the headstock and the classic single pickup look. The color looks more copper than red to me. What is the "official" color?

It's officially Metallic Orange the shots around my house were taken in pretty strong late afternoon sunlight in an attempt to capture its real color, and the pic at Mike's was taken under cool white fluorescent tubes - a light source that's very weak in the yellow thru red part of the visable color spectrum, thus it doesn't look so good there. It was always Mike's intent to make these bolt on neck basses as a concession to ease of construction, his shop would have a difficult time in making true neck-thru basses. I'm very glad I ordered it as a single pup bass, I play rock with a pick and I'll never be any sort of virtuoso player, so the idea was to have a simple bass that does that job well, so far I love it!  And just like like the Gibson original single pup versions of Mike's are rare - mine is the only one out of 19 basses and yes, the cutaway on the lower bout is "stock".
Here's another pic of it outside and a shot of it's builder's cert.

I can finally see it ... Gorgeous, Mark, plain gorgeous. Color reminds me a bit of the "Lava Pearl" fin I have on my Bongo.

Have you already found the correct black hardware for the necessary visual upgrade?  :vader:

Orang-e-bird, Orang-e-bird, it's a wonder, Thunderbird...
(a sad nod to the Orangeboom toon, which probably means absolutely nothing to you USofA types...)

How's it hangin' dudess...? the balance, of course... is she a "stage-diver" or does she behave herself...?

Nice one, Mark...!

Please don't mention Oranjeboom 'beer'. That's instant headache beer! No people in Holland drink it, so I think they try to get rid of it abroad. A friend of mine once made the mistake to order alcohol free beer, not knowing the place was serving Oranjeboom Malt. I never tasted anything as bad as that!

Chris the equivalent here in Australia is called Birrell. And it is god awful stuff. I was doing some work on a movie set (A Thousand Skies) in the outback (for want of a better description of the Flinders Ranges) years ago and we were in this ghost town. They had done the old pub up to make it look like it was still in use. We were supposed to be patrons partaking of the amber nectar as a famous Australian Aviator flew his plane down and parked it in front of the pub. (Not a particularly unusual thing to this day at places like Birdsville).
Due to the legalities of workplace drinking all alcohol is banned on Movie sets here. So the beer was Birrel. Not only was it Birrel, it was HOT Birrel. It was 38C in the shade and the shoot took 4 hours on and off. A real pub was an hour and a half away. 3 hours in we were honestly just about ready to vomit from this disgusting stuff when one of the local Cockies (Farmers) who was helping the production company turned up with 3 ice cold slabs of Coopers Ale.

Not a word was said by anyone. Not the director, the guy from the production company or even the union rep.

All partook.  ;)

The German supermarket chain Aldi sells big and cheap 0,5 liter cans of Schultenbrau beer. It's drunk on parties of teenagers and so. The nice thing about this beer is that it's luke warm as disgusting as it is cold, so you can drink it luke warm without ptoblems;)

But I've definitely spent a large amount of hours researching this ;)

The Greek equivalent is Amstel beer, not the imported of course.

I went to Greece a couple of years ago and to my surprise there where three kinds of beer: A German one (can't remember which) and two Dutch ones (Amstel and Heineken) but locally brewed. I thought they were allright... But if you don't like Amstel and Heineken in the first place...

I'm from the north-western part of Holland and we only drink Heineken and Amstel here. Where Rob lives it's Grolsch country.

Yeah, but of the regular pilsners I prefer Dommelsch.

Sort of. They call it Meibok (May Bock)

Nop, I'm not an Amstel/Heineken type. My favourite beer is Augustiner Helle, but they sell it only on Munich. Damn.

a common Greek (Athens?) brew when I spent a lot of time there in the early 80's, post aviation life, was "Fix", a good "Carlsberg like" drink...

There was an english speaking crew that used to meet up at this junction of 5 roads for a nights entertainment, it would start with securing tables for the empties, which we would not allow to be collected until a table was filled, attempting to fill a glass with as much froth as possible without spilling anything (loser paid) and "hoser-head" practice usually meant I won and had a cheap evening) and then the floor-show...

The Greeks are a trifle unpatient as drivers and the lights went straight from green to red, resulting in lots of horn blowing and irate road rage drivers - at least once every 15 minutes there would be an accident of some sort, almost always minor, but some spectacular collisions would occur from time-to-time...

Yea, but that was at the 80ssss, now we have calm (a bit). Fix is nice beer, its kinda hard to find thru.
The best beer widely available here is Kaiser pilsner, I think. But that's a matter of taste ofcourse.

I won't link it to this site but I once made a comic in which the lead character wanted to loose her virginity in a unique way and so she hooked up with a transsexual. All this talk about Mark being a lady reminded me of that.

My body is just a sexual amusement park..........................

John,
I got to play the Lull at rehearsal and for our show opening for Voltaire this past Friday night, the bass plays incredilbly well, Mike's craftsmanship is topnotch. I don't own a 60's 'Bird to compare the pick up against so I can only say that I really like the tone I'm getting with it: played with a pick in a rock band setting it's growly and warm, definately tighter sounding than my '76's ( it's making me re-eq them!) less dark and less mid range. This is probably in part due to it's bolt on neck too.
Mike's pick up sounds SO good, when my BaCH bird arrives it's getting one right away, and much as I like the stock pups in my Nikki Sixx Mk.II, they're going to be changed out as well.........
I'm hoping one of us here that owns a 60's bird will try them as well, I'm sincerly impressed.
Anyway here I'm killing time onstage during soundcheck Friday night.........The bass ROCKS!

Mike's pick up sounds SO good,

I have a similar issue with my 70's pup Fenderbird, where I need to boost things up a bit with my pre-amp, but switch basses to my high output LP and it sounds like crap. The Lp needs to be tamed. I can't see switching on stage without some seriuos monkey business. I could see a house sound guy setting the controls for one bass and when you switch, the sound guys not payingh attention & the bass drops out or is in everyones face.

I found the sound guy makes or breaks a band.
