Gibson Basses / How's your Clutch?
« on: October 24, 2009, 12:18:54 AM »
One of those bands I'd heard of but who seemed to fly below my radar until tonight. Nofi posted this video up top and I'm hooked:

The LP was just a start... While perusing their videos I found this:

This bassist (Dan Maines) would fit in just fine here:

Not only an SG-Z, but CHROME, baby! I like these guys...  ;D

Gibson Basses / KISS in Canada 4/22/76 Wine Red Ripper?
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:29:39 PM »

Pretty awesome 8mm footage. It looks like Gene's playing a Ripper in some of these clips but it doesn't look black. What do you guys think?

Here's the guy's description:

SPECIAL SURPRISE! It's Confirmed. KISS played GOD OF THUNDER on the short first US/Canada leg of the Destroyer Tour. On this tour, the band used the Alive staging and costumes. This tour preceded the UK/Europe tour of 1976, and featured songs from the Destroyer album. This, however, is the only tour in the Alive costumes where God of Thunder exists! They did not play it in Europe. We now have proof! Enjoy this amazing find!

Gene's hair catches fire on this one, too...

Fender Basses / My '78 A neck is very thin.
« on: July 26, 2009, 05:51:24 PM »

I've posted this pic many times but I can always find an excuse to do it again.

I couldn't remember how much it weighed so after weighing it tonight (just under 10 1/2 pounds) I thought I'd measure the nut. I thought it was an A neck but it also feels very different to me from a Jazz neck from that era. Not as thick front to back. Anyway, I found that the width at the nut is 1 7/16". I know that's only 1/16 smaller than advertised, but it got me wondering whether other A necks of the era are the same. Anyone out there have any experience with this era A neck Ps?

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of George Fullerton, founding partner and the ā€œGā€ in G&L Musical Instruments.  George died on Saturday of heart failure, only weeks after his own wife passed away.  Preparations for a memorial service are currently underway, with more details to follow.  Please check here for further information.  7/06/2009

I didn't see this mentioned here. I guess he missed his wife too much to stick around. R.I.P.

This is almost too late, but today is Scott's birthday and I wanted to wish you a happy (almost belated) birthday, my friend! Here's to many, many more.  ;)

Other Bass Brands / Greco Bird / Dasson Bridge
« on: June 19, 2009, 05:23:50 PM »
Every once in a while it would pop into my head to try this and I finally remembered to do so today. I haven't used a tuner to see how close I can get the intonation, but by ear it doesn't sound off at all on the G string. I know theoretically this shouldn't work, but here it is:

The center post for the three point leaves a hole (and the Grecos had a sleeve which shows even more), but if I ever refin this bass it'll definitely get the Dasson treatment! I'm gonna leave it as is for now and see how I like it. I think it looks a LOT better. I'll bet a certain Fraulein might think so, too...  ;)

I marvel at the ingenuity and imagination of men (and women) who dare to attempt things like this:

The first phase of the Pentagon's plan to regrow soldiers' limbs is complete; scientists managed to turn human skin into the equivalent of a blastema ā€” a mass of undifferentiated cells that can develop into new body parts. Now, researchers are on to phase two: turning that cellular glop into a square inch of honest-to-goodness muscle tissue.

It's a ways off yet, but still, this is amazing to me.

This is awesome. I think even I saw Uwe stealing a bike somewhere in there. And which one of you is in there with your girlfriend around 2:50? ;)
