It's not very powerful but still, this is cool! Points for adding the authentic sound effects as well.

I know we've already had a ton of these even here, but this one is pretty funny. Looks like these might not be up much longer...

The Outpost Cafe / She Choked Me With Her Nubs

A St. Paul man charged with beating up a quadruple amputee last week admitted Monday that he hit the woman, but only after she hit him first...

Although Bell had both hands and part of both legs amputated because of a childhood illness, Smith said she can still be violent when she loses her temper.

"She'll swing, push me down and choke me with her nubs," Smith said. He said she also hit him with her wheelchair.

The Outpost Cafe / I Know Where I'll Be On April 12th...

Last August, we wrote about the "Double Down," a mysteriously tempting (and potentialy lethal) new food item being tested by KFC. For those coming late to the story, it's bacon and cheese sandwiched between two pieces of fried chicken. And now, many months later, I'll finally be able to get my hands on one.

KFC announced the decision to go live with the Double Down yesterday, but we weren't sure they weren't playing a April Fools gag. But no, they truly are going nationwide with the delicacy on April 12.

The Outpost Cafe / Stay Safe Gonzo!
« on: February 27, 2010, 02:45:28 PM »
I've been reading about the earthquake in Chile and tsunami warnings in the Pacific all day and hoping Hawaii makes it through with as little impact as possible. I'm thinking of you and yours, Gonzo (and sending good thoughts/prayers)! I don't know where you're situated on the Island, but I hope it's far away from any impact.

The devastation in Chile is heart wrenching. Here's hoping that they can get through this as well...

The Missile Defense Agency demonstrated the potential use of directed energy to defend against ballistic missiles when the Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB) successfully destroyed a boosting ballistic missile. The experiment, conducted at Point Mugu Naval Air Warfare Center-Weapons Division Sea Range off the central California coast, serves as a proof-of-concept demonstration for directed energy technology. The ALTB is a pathfinder for the nation’s directed energy program and its potential application for missile defense technology.

They've been plugging away at this for years and have had successful and not so successful tests, but the fact that this is now more a reality than not makes me feel the same sense of wonder that I do about those who strapped men to bombs and sent them to the moon. I love this stuff...

The Outpost Cafe / Why You Never Question A Drunk...
« on: February 05, 2010, 02:54:46 PM »
From a female perspective:

I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected:

·         half-gallon of 2% milk
·         carton of eggs
·         quart of orange juice
·         head of lettuce
·         2 lb. can of coffee
·         1 lb. package of bacon

As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the cashier.  While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunk calmly stated, 'You must be single.'

I was a bit startled by this proclamation, but I was intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since I indeed had never found Mr. Right. I looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about my selections that could have tipped off the drunk to my marital status...

Curiosity getting the better of me, I said , 'Yes you are correct . But how on earth did you know that?'

.
.
.
.
.
.
.

The drunk replied, 'Cause you're ugly.

Gibson Basses / Blasphemous Thunderbird Carnage
« on: January 14, 2010, 04:20:44 PM »
Scott's probable new purchase got us talking and I remembered a photo I had from a guy who replaced the bridge on his 70's bird for a 60's unit. He went so far as to lay in a veneer from the bridge pickup back (to cover the three point holes). What's even more impressive is that it was a natural bird he did it to:

So that got me thinking. If you planed 1/8" off the whole center section and put a 1/8" veneer on it you could not only slap a two piece bridge on it but do this as well:

Neither one of the two 70s birds I have left is totally original. Both were refinished and one has a Badass. I think I may be yanking off that Badass for a new project!

The Outpost Cafe / Anyone into home recording?
« on: January 04, 2010, 03:53:18 PM »
Over the years I've had ideas and desires but never taken the plunge into a home studio (other than a cassette 4 track years ago that I used for songwriting but never liked much). One thing I don't know if I've ever mentioned here is that I was a singer long before I was a bass player. As a kid singing time was the only time I ever behaved at Sunday School and pretty much in regular school as well (I did my first solo in the Mother's Day program at 4 and was hooked after all the attention it garnered me  ;D). Well, this year they roped me into singing in the Christmas program at church (hadn't done it in a few years) and all the comments afterward sparked a desire to do some recording to give friends next Christmas. I figure that gives me 11 months to figure it out and get something recorded, and a huge side benefit is that I'll be able to record with old friends and bandmates as well.

So in the past few weeks (after selling excess gear to pay for it) I've bought a used Digidesign 002 fire wire interface and Pro Tools 8LE. I also have a 24 track Soundtracs Topaz board that I've held onto for years just for this occasion. I'd already built a Mac computer for my color correcting project and have a few mics and assorted outboard gear that I also picked up along the way, so once everything gets here I won't have any excuses left. In fact, posting this is another way to push myself into action as I figure at least one of you will bug me along the way to see how I'm coming along.

I'd love to hear about any of your experiences and advice in DIY/home recording, and wish me luck!

Bass Amps & Effects / Ampeg V2 4X12
« on: December 06, 2009, 07:47:59 PM »
I stopped in the local banjo center the other day and they had an Ampeg V2 cabinet in the bass room. I thought this was a guitar cabinet (though it looks like a short SVT cab). Has anyone used one of these for bass? If so, how does it sound? I'm wondering if it's worth checking out...

Fender Basses / Anyone here have a Highway 1 Jazz?
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:09:06 PM »
I may get one in a trade deal and I'm looking for opinions. This one's an early model with the thin lacquer finish and no graphite in the neck. Are these U.S. made as well? Looks like the truss rod adjustment is at the headstock, where later ones have it at the heel. This one's also got an added Badass 2 and a replaced bridge pickup (SD), though the original is included. Do these early ones have the alnico pickups, too? If you have one, how does it sound? Are these keepers?

The Outpost Cafe / What? I'm Adopted?!!
« on: November 14, 2009, 03:06:12 PM »
Scott mentioned in another thread that he was adopted, and I was surprised because I didn't remember it coming up before. I was adopted too, so I'm always interested when I find others who were. Uwe mentioned something I also have an interest in and Scott asked a little about my situation, so rather than jack the other thread I thought I'd start a new one.

Scott, I immediately thought of your brother as well. I'm glad you guys weren't split up. Kudos to your mom and dad for taking you both! As for me, My story is (in a nutshell) this:

My parents had six daughters. My mom reached the age (43) where the doc said not to get pregnant again, so they decided to adopt. My parents were very open with me about my being adopted and I mostly avoided any hangups about it. I remember seeing some TV movie as a kid that chronicled the horrible life some kid thought they had because they were adopted and I thought it was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen. My parents were the people who loved and raised me. Who took me to the doctor and dentist all those years and made sure I went to school. Who sat up with me when I was sick and kicked my butt when it needed kicking. I love my parents and miss them every single day since they've been gone.

But, in another instance of life taking such interesting twists and turns, in my 20's I became acquainted with my birth mother, and after that my birth father. That time was actually the one era in my life where my being adopted got a little weird for me. I felt really guilty about having any type of relationship with them at all, because it felt like I was somehow betraying my parents. At the same time, it was amazing seeing my facial features on another person... Luckily, they both were very respectful of my 'space' and let me call all the shots. It took a few years before I worked through that weird feeling and sort of put everything in its place.

I've often been amazed at the similarities I share with my birth parents. That being said, I'm also very much like my parents (my father especially as I get older). That whole nature/nurture thing is something I have first hand experience with!

Like Scott said, it's an interesting life...
