What did you use to flatten that area under the bridge in order to make room for that veneer that you grafted on?  Router?  Did doing the veneer turn out to be easier than dowelling the holes from the old bridge?  The whole 2-point mod is awesome.  That whole thing came out really good!

P.S.  I like the gold knobs.

The Bass Zone / Re: analog purist goin' digital?

I try to go for the best of both worlds - leverage what digital has to offer in terms of flexibility, and try to preserve the sound of the analog instruments that I know and love in the process.

I used to do a lot of 4-track recording.  With a serial medium like tape, you really had to plan ahead both in terms of the composition, and also logistics like bouncing tracks - four tracks just never seemed like enough!  I sure learned to work the limitations, though.

When I started with a digital audio workstation, it was kind of intimidating at first.  Not only is there so much capability in terms of the software and plug-ins, but it literally changed the entire songwriting process for me (or I should say that I let it change the process for me).  What I find myself doing now is usually laying down scratch/guide tracks for the different sections of the song, and arranging the song structure virtually using "cut and paste" in the recording software.  This makes it easy to audition different ideas and sections, change the song structure from AABA to ABA, etc...  Usually then I'll then go back and re-record the scratch tracks - playing thru the whole song or section.  I found that I like this approach to songwriting better, because it actually feels more spontaneous and organic to me.  The whole process feels less rigid, structured, and pre-meditated than when I was working with the old 4-track.

Congrats!

I like the surf colors, although that blue ice metallic color that is on there looks pretty cool to me too.

An Alembic-style bridge (or that 2pc Warwick) might look nice on there too.

Marko (MPU from the DP) built that one.

Since the pic is an attachment to the post, it looks like the board requires that you are signed in to view it.  Doesn't show up if you are viewing as a guest, but it appears once you sign in.

Nice collection!  I was trying to figure out what color that last NR bird is - golden mist poly?

I don't really have a problem, since mine are only used recreationally  :)

One of my first LPs as a kid was Tull's Benefit, and I really dug the look and sound of Cornick's bass.  Of course now twenty years later, I find out that Cornick hated his EB-2D, and only used it on one song ever.  Thanks, Jules.  :-\   ;D

I had played as a kid, but had taken about ten years away from music due to burnout (several bands and school at the same time; bands lost).  I guess it made more sense back then, but I had been conditioned by teachers and other musicians to think that I needed "versatile" basses (main basses were the old white Stingray fretless, and a beat up, modded Aria SB-Elite).

When I started playing again, I reflected on the err of my childhood ways, and went and bought my '66 EB-2D.  Now three EBs and a Japan Epi later, I couldn't be happier!  Plan to add a Triumph someday as well, and something of the 6-string variety (looking at the Les Paul Specials, ES-333, 335-S, and "The Paul").

I've looked and I can't find these sold anywhere.  Does anyone know where one might be found?

I see them on Ebay regularly, usually selling in the $3-400 USD range.

Theres a nice-looking cream-colored one up there now:

I use a M-Audio 1814 8in/4out interface.  I got it off Ebay for $300 USD - mainly just in case I needed the extra I/Os for something (recording drums, for example).  What I have found for most of my stuff is that I typically only record 2 tracks simultaneously.  I probably would have been fine with something smaller - like the M-Audio 410.  I've been happy with this interface so far, BTW.  The built-in preamps are kind of meh, but the nice thing is that you don't have to use them.  I use an outboard pre, and that sounds much better.

Most of the audio interfaces on the market that use firewire operate at firewire 400 spec (400 Mbits/sec).  While USB2 (480 Mbits/sec) actually signalls faster than FW400, FW400 can be better at sustained data transfers since it uses its own processor - unlike USB which shares your computer's processor.  Given this info, it might be a better bet to opt for firewire over USB if you have a choice - but the question of whether or not you *need* firewire just depends on what you are doing, how fast/powerful your PC's processor is, etc...
