Thanks to Baz for not bidding on this I got it for a very good price, I told him what I was planning and he graciously backed off. I owe him big time.  I've received a very good preliminary quote on repro covers and will be sending it off to finalize the details.  Still may not happen but it's getting closer.

Question:

Is the '60's half inch height the way to go or should they be 3/4"?

Thanks

1/2" if you are doing exact 1960's  repros. But I believe the Orvilles are 3/4" but that may be because they have massive magnets on the bottom???

would it be a question of pickup placement in order to get these pups closer to the strings like say humbuckers on an Les Paul? the higher mount going to the bridge?

No, 3/4" makes a cleaner package for installing 'modern' guts.  Original style pup innards fit in the 1/2".  Foam is pretty much standard to regulate height differences bridge to neck for these style covers.  3/4" could always be ground down as we've seen Pilgrim do.  I can't decide which way to go at this point but leaning towards 3/4".
