The Outpost Cafe / New album(s) Black Crowes
« on: September 10, 2009, 06:19:12 AM »
Before the Frost / Until the Freeze...

They are excellent!
Best album(s) in a long time.

I wouldn't be surprised if their single "I ain't hiding" becomes a smash hit.
Very funky bassline that reminds me of a Bill Wyman bass part.
Some Britpop influences. But still unmistakably Black Crowes.
Great guitar solo too.

Before the Frost / Until the Freez is very diverse: with touches of soul, bluegrass, blues, rock, etc

Both albums are on heavy rotation in my iPod.

Finally scored one last night!
After years of gassing for those.
They don't pop up very often on Ebay and if they do they're usually way out of my league price wise.

This one needs some serious TLC, but I'm quite sure it will be a most enjoyable bass after that.
The most structural issue is a badly executed neck repair, that needs to be redone.

I'm pretty psyched!

They have some pretty cool looking basses over at Muse Inc

I wonder if they're any good.
And what price they retail for.

Other Bass Brands / Guild SB-202 Fretless
« on: July 14, 2009, 11:43:14 AM »
I don't own a fretless bass (yet). But I want one.

I stumbled upon this and I'm about to hit the BIN.
I have no idea if the price is reasonable.
But it sure is a beauty...

Guild SB-202 made fretless on Ebay

Should I go for it?

Bass Amps & Effects / Burman pro4000
« on: May 15, 2009, 01:54:59 AM »
Stumled upon a Burman pro 4000 amp the other day. For sale on a dutch aution site:

Looks like an interesting amp! Point To Point wiring. The four KT77 powertubes should deliver about 120 watts I think.
Any experiences? Opinions?

Gibson Basses / Cheap SG faded worn cherry
« on: March 14, 2009, 04:56:57 AM »
Why is this brandnew SG so much cheaper than the other SG basses we've seen lately?

The difference in price is substantial. Only 799 euro...

Other Bass Brands / New Tokai Gibson copies
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:20:57 PM »
I walked into the local music store today and to my surpise they had several Tokai Gibson clones hanging on the wall.

A Firebird, a Flying V (fifties style), an Explorer and a Thunderbird.

Now I know that Tokai has an excellent reputation. Their Les Pauls, Strats, P and J basses have always been excellent stuff.

Any opinions about the current Tokai instruments? They were all priced 435 euro. Which somehow seemed pretty cheap to me...

The plastic casing of the Artec humbucker on the BaCHbird looks cheap and awkward.
Not to worry: A year ago I bought one of these empty casings plus mount ring from Greatdealz at Ebay.

So I took out the toolbox and filed off the corners of the plastic casing.

The NOS Gibson casing slides over just perfectly!

I can't believe how simple this was!

I'm really digging this new Ibanez bass!
Mahogany body, maple neck. Short scale.

Wonder how it sounds and feels...

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Gibsonized Pearl Export Bass
« on: December 31, 2008, 05:29:55 AM »
The Pearl Export Bass (=Epi Genesis) that I had bought a while ago didn't get enough attention. The competion of my other bass guitars was too strong.
I had initially bought it to use the three point bridge and humbuckers (a la TB+) for the BaCHbird. But along the way of that project it became clear that the bridge and Artec pickup on the BaCHbird were going to excellent. No need to replace them.
So I tried to sell the Pearl. I got a few silly bids. But none of them was tempting enough to sell this brave little bass.

Then I decided to use it for some experimenting. I took out the toolbox and started hobbying...
When I finally had figured out how the wiring works I hooked it up to my amp.
It sounds amazing!

The bass features
A Gibson LO-Z bass pickup at the neck
A Gibson LO-Z guitar pickup at the bridge
A three position dial for the neck pickup to chose the coiltap.
Two stacked pots. The top ones are volume, the bottom ones are tone.

So you can dial in as much of the individual pickups as you wish. This gives you even more sound possibilities/colours than the Les Paul Basses already have!
The combination of the maple and the bass and guitar pickup is awesome.

There's one hole left that I should fill with a switch. I think I am going to place a pickup selector so that I can switch fast during a song.

I'll post sound samples later.

Gibson Basses / finally: a spare Lo-Z pickup for me...
« on: December 02, 2008, 12:22:59 PM »
..plus some more!

A while back I won a low impedance Gibson Les Paul Bass pickup. I grabbed my chance to give back the pickup that Uwe lent me.

Within a week another pickup popped up on Ebay. So I bid on that one too.
And I won it too.

But it wasn't just the pickup. It also featured a guitar Les Paul lo-z humbucker plus stacked pots, capacitors, an impedance transformer, a three position dial and a weird pickguard.

Haven't had a chance to hook it up to a bass, but it sure looks mighty cool 8)
I bet that guitar pickup sounds just great on a bass!
