Gibson Basses / My first TB project
« on: January 14, 2008, 01:50:24 PM »
Actually, my first TB project, one I did several years ago, was a Fenderbird from parts I scarfed off eBay.  This is it.  Alder body, walnut top, Warmoth paddle head neck that I made into a TB style headstock.  Sounded great, but was way neck heavy, so I sold it.  Sorry about the pup, I thought it would be fun to experiment!   :P

Mines 2 years old and it chipped & not on the crew holes either.

Gibson nitro never chipped like that. I think it's something with the ReRanch rattle can formula.

I agree, I find the nitro on my Gibsons pretty sturdy.  I've not had any problems with it.

Thanks guys!  I'm leaving it without a pickguard for the time being.  I like the grain showing through.  I felt a little guilty using the Gibson truss rod cover since it's obviously not a genuine Gibson, but it just looks so nice.

Man, those bullet-style cases are massive.  I would really prefer an old fashioned wood case, but the all of the custom guys want $300 plus and I'm ready to drop that kinda money on a case!  Yet........

This is the Ebay store where I bought my carbon fiber pickguard & trc.

http://stores.ebay.com/The-Guitar-Parts-Center_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZ1QQfsubZQ2d33QQftidZ2QQtZkm

He told me he would do one with the bird in any material he had. The bird on this one is done from underneath. Based on mine, if he uses the same way on all of them then the bird could be any color. Of course mine might be made different because of the materials.

BTW, he sell Epi & Gibson trc's for other models as well, so if you don't like the $$$$ bass trc, you could get a repro from him.

I bought one from him awhile back and I thought it was pretty good.

You have to something indoors up there in Winter - I understand that it's chilly sometimes not to mention the polar bears out looking for their next meal :P

To be honest, you are somewhat correct.  Once winter sets in up here (100-200 inches of snow per year), I settle into my home and wait it out.  I've always loved woodworking and have only had time for it the last 2 years with both of my kids out of the house.  I'm not a skier and I'm not into skating any longer. I guess snowshoeing is the next stage for us geezers!   :P

The nitro on this bass was 5 weeks cured and it still chipped.  Oh well, at least it looks like a 40 year old bass.

a Rochester NY thing or a competition between Scott & DrBassman?

No competition here, just fellow bassists who love to tinker and happen to live up the road from one another.

I thought (heard) that RR was just McFaddens Nitro that they tint at the loading of the can?  I have done three in RR - my white Pbass and my Red Fbird plus a buddie's seafoam green - all three have held up well but keep in mind I'm gentle on them.

I don't know what it is, but this one is brittle. Not a big deal on a vintage bass IMO.  I too am gentle with my basses, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I would warn anyone about Reranch- It's brittle! Both my red non Reverse & White Eb-0 have chipped just by looking at it!

I would never use Reranch if you want something that is even partially durable!

If you want a fast relic job, use Reranch!

Mixed & sprayed Nitro has to fare better. I'm disappointed in the durability of reranch.

I agree, the next solid color finish I do I'm gonna use automotive acrylic lacquer.

My pleasure.  It's nice to see a serious horticulturalist in the crowd!   :)

I'm glad to see it done, waiting for it was like reading all the way through a book only to find the last chapter missing.

At least it has a happy ending!
