Title: New (to me) Gibson 2005 Thunderbird Studio
Post by: TBird1958 on May 18, 2020, 08:22:23 AM

New to me Gibson 2006 Studio, I'm really digging this bass! Great tone from (of all things!) TB Plus pickups, this is a pretty lively set of them. This one came to me all the way from Memphis (I think there's a song in that) , got a really good deal!

You know it's mine 'cause there's a Subaru involved, the only 7enders at my house are on the car.

A bit of video fun too.

That one does sound very "forward". Ought to sound great with the band.

That sounds great, and I agree that it was made for pick playing.

That's a great sound that'll cut through well! It indeed seems to be surprisingly "in your face" for being a TB Plus equipped 'Bird.

Yeah, those SIT strings are fantastic with the TB+ pickups.

Jack Bruce was using SIT stainless Rock Brights in his later years, 50-105 IIRC.

Angry bird! Sounds great. Actually sounds very much like my Les Paul.

Those were always underrated and good vallue for money. Not the most elegant instrument, kind of a Victory and a real T-Bird lumped together!

More like a Thunderbird and Embassy lumped together I'd say

I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know whether it holds true in all Studios, but mine is significantly heavier than either my Epiphone CP or VP. Oddly it seems to have similar sustain characteristics to the neck-through basses.

It's a very authoritative bass, perhaps the set neck and TB Plus are the match? I got this one for $840.00 shipped = Happy Queen! It had some Flats on it, they were awful, plonky and thin sounding. It likes steel rounds a lot!

Those things have deeper bass frequencies than a regular Bird, but the mids aren't as nuanced, more solid. Heavy rock compatible.

I listened to the clip through my stereo and I reckon It sounds great, I hear less of the mid range honk you get with tb plus on a standard thunderbird. If there is more low bass too then I am going to keep an eye(and Ear) out for one! The Thunderbird I had back in 1990 had all sorts of pickups in it (this was before thunderbuckers) chasing a tone probably not too different to what I hear in your video ! How does the weight compare?

I haven't weighed it, but it feels just a little heavier than my '89. The more I play this bass the more I'm really digging it, the neck is just a little bigger than a standard issue Bird, it's just solid!
