Gibson Basses / Another Epi Newport
« on: November 08, 2008, 03:05:59 PM »
This looks about as clean as I've ever seen, but the price with 3 hours left is still low in these times.

The Bass Zone / Gear for Sale - from a friend and excellent bassist
« on: October 25, 2008, 09:24:28 PM »
I'm posting this list for a guy in Cincinnati.  I got the list via email, and he said it would be OK for me to post this gear for sale list.

Marc Hoffman is the bassist for Sonny Moorman, and you'd be hard pressed to find a guy who can do smooth scale work so well.  I've never been able to get that ability down.  At any rate, Marc's a good guy, and he's got the following for sale:

Going to be selling some gear that is not
being used:

1977 SVT head - $1500.

Thunderfunk head - $975.

Aguilar 1-12 cab. - $225.

Lakland (Skyline) Darryl Jones Jazz Bass - $925.

Bass cab., 1-18 - $100.

Korg Tuner, DTR2, rack-mount - $90.

Juice Goose power strip - $25.

Spread the word - spread the love.

He can be contacted directly at mhoff48 "at" cinci.rr.com

I also invited him to join our ragtag bunch.

The Bass Zone / I think I'm happy with my sound...
« on: October 25, 2008, 12:03:32 PM »
These were shot from a digital camera (not a camcorder), using the room sound.  Not too bad.  I'm using the Bettie Page bass through the Ashdown on this.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Clearing house
« on: October 06, 2008, 12:02:03 PM »
Well, I think I need to clear out my parts box to prepare for the projects I know that I'll be doing in the next year, and that includes my plan for the powder coating machine.

Up for sale, exclusive to those of you here:

Warwick bridge - it's gold, not chrome.  $60 including shipping

Set of Jazz Bass pickups - these came out of my Hamer.  They may be SD's,but I'm not sure.  It's whatever the bass came with.  I know they aren't the EMGs.  The only markings are 1NR and 1BR .  $60 including shipping

Cafe Walter Audio headphone amp - this thing is really nice, but I just don't use it.  And, I have the Bass Buddy if I ever want to use headphones.  $75 plus shipping.

Anyone ever done it?  I know it's expensive to get done, unless you find someone doing a run in the color you want at the same time.

Just curious how it turned out for anyone who's tried it.

The Outpost Cafe / Oh, what a night!
« on: September 21, 2008, 12:10:30 PM »
Last night's gig goes in the books as one of the more interesting I've done in over 20 years.   We're playing at this biker bar, which is right across the street from a place we played a couple times a few months back.  After the second set, everyone starts piling out the front door.  A few of the patrons who had left our place earlier were suddenly in a massive brawl in the parking lot across the street.  Within 10 min, there were a good dozen assorted city and county squads, a helicopter and an ambulance onsite.  The guy that had left our place had his head split open, leaving blood everywhere.  I guess he was alright, and was sent to the hospital - his sister was still stone drunk and came back over to the club we were at to continue the night.
There were women dancing on the bar, ala Coyote Ugly, all night long.  The bar even has a rail mounted in the ceiling to aid in the act.  Did I mention this was a biker bar?
Anyway, not to leave the night without another first, as I was loading out, I noticed a young couple on the back steps of the patio at the end of the building.  The end of the lot slopes down, so you can't really see the stairs from the patio.  You can see it from the parking lot, and my Vue was parked about 30 ft. away.  There they were in full mating ritual - he was standing behind her in an unmistakable rhythm.  I went back in and laughing told my bandmates what the couple that had been standing at the bar were up to.  When I left to go home about 3 minutes later, she was in front of him, apparently finishing him off.

Ahhh...to be young and unaware of one's surroundings.

Gibson Basses / Another horror story...
« on: September 02, 2008, 08:13:02 PM »
I just came across this.  All I can say is....OUCH....

It looks like someone took a guitar body, spliced a neck on it, put something resembling a serial number on the headstock, and then left it to die.  At least the asking price is right.  The case should be worth that much.

Gibson Basses / What's wrong with this pic?
« on: August 23, 2008, 11:14:47 AM »
I was watching this one - yeah, waving the Epi freak flag again.  Something about it bugged me.  It looks really clean, but something wasn't right.  It finally dawned on me.  Someone who had this was a lefty, and did a really nice job of modifying the profile of the upper horn.  Prices on these are going up.  Lucky for me if I ever decide to sell.

The Bass Zone / Yogi Berra explains jazz bass
« on: August 09, 2008, 05:52:45 AM »
Interviewer: What do you expect is in store for the future of jazz bass?

Yogi: I'm thinkin' there'll be a group of guys who've never met
talkin' about it all the time.

Interviewer: Can you explain jazz bass?

Yogi: I can't, but I will. 90% of all jazz is half improvisation,
even on bass. The other half is the part bass players play while
others are playing something they never played with anyone who played
that part. So if you play the wrong part, its right. If you play the
right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you
play it too right, it's wrong.

Interviewer: I don't understand.

Yogi: Anyone who understands jazz bass knows that you can't
understand it. It's too complicated. That's what's so simple about it.

Interviewer: Do you understand it?

Yogi: No. That's why I can explain it. If I understood it, I wouldn't
know anything about it.

Interviewer: Are there any great jazz bass players alive today?

Yogi: No. All the great jazz bass players alive today are dead.
Except for the ones that are still alive. But so many of them are
dead, that the ones that are still alive are dying to be like the
ones that are dead. Some would kill for it.

Interviewer: What is syncopation?

Yogi: That's when the note that you should hear now happens either
before or after you hear it. In jazz, you don't hear notes when they
happen because that would be some other type of music. Other types of
music can be jazz, but only if they're the same as something
different from those other kinds.

Interviewer: Now I really don't understand.

Yogi: I haven't taught you enough for you to not understand jazz bass
that well.

The Bass Zone / 2Tek is back?
« on: April 05, 2008, 11:40:44 AM »
Just found a post over on TB from one of the owners of 2Tek.  He says they're planning to bring the bridge back on the market.  I love my Hamer Cruise 2Tek.  One of the best basses I've ever owned.  I've actually had a couple of them.
