A Project Manager here at work just tried to impress me by telling me she's going to see the Deep Purple show in a few days (whenever it is).

You try standing on a busy Berlin traffic crossing at that age!!!

The photos are actually by Jim Rakete, a renowned Berlin portrait photographer in the realism vein.

He has been affiliated with more photogenic subjects, 'tis true ...

but Purple have had a lot more awful pictures taken of them even when they were a lot younger!

Unlike that other band whose name escapes me now, but they had this purloined novelty hit with what sounded like a bee swarm going from side to side, the Purps never (got) photographed that well.

Usually only one or two songs are aired, then the videos are posted on Today's website.

Are the videos blocked in Germany? http://www.today.com/video and scroll down to Toyota Concert Series to check.

I'm out of the loop, who dared to take  Jon Lord's place?

Don Airey, that's who. Does the Don mean he's a mob boss? That would explain how he has enough bravado to step in for Lord.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Don Airey, ex-Cozy Powell's Hammer, ex-Colosseum II, ex-Black Sabbath (he's all over Never Say Die), ex-Rainbow, ex-Ozzy Osbourne (the Mr Crowley intro is his composition, uncredited), ex-Gary Moore, ex-Whitesnake (he's all over 1987)  ...

Since 2002!

Here's the handover, around 4:28,

Jon appeared at this final concert when Don Airey had already joined permanently (after standing in for Jon after the latter's knee surgery) and since then only appeared at two or three DP gigs on stage for the odd encore or such.

And, incidentally, Jon, a habitual latecomer during his life (but reliable in the long term) is now indeed late, Mark, and has been for three years! They just commemorated him in Leicester where he was born.

Now bow down, skirt up and be spanked, Mark!

Airey is an excellent player and technically more adept than Jon, good songwriter and arranger too, he doesn't have his rhythmic swagger though, Jon wasn't so much the Ritchie Blackmore of the Hammond C3 as he was the Keith Richards.
