Blackmore's favorite bands were Mountain and Vanilla Fudge? That's cool if he's being serious but you never know with that guy.

Saw Megadeth open up for Black Sabbath with Dio in Albany maybe a year before Dio passed. The bill should have been switched. Megadeth had so much more energy and momentum compared to that Sabbath lineup which comparatively sounded as if it was stuck in the mud and, as it turns out, on death's door. No disrespect intended to the man's legacy, just giving an honest assessment. RIP RJD.

Oh yeah Grand Funk did do Some Kind Of Wonderful. That's bluesy alright. I prefer the earlier material though, when Mel had the mudbucker in his Jazz bass. Nice rendition from John Ellison there Uwe.
Here's a tune off an album I just picked up from an old shop in Lowell, MA. It's 89' and that's kinda classic from my perspective. Hamp is classic. He's backed up by some young lions here, notably Anthony Jackson who is laying it down solid and simple. Hamp is the one who steals the performance when his solo comes around. Listen for a man in his 80s expressing a lifetime of experience. That's good ole' classic blues to me.

Good musicians find inspiration in surprising places sometimes. It's hard to imagine being an ex pat for as long as Marty has. I guess he really likes Japan.

Anybody else digging this new one from Marty? He's one of my favorite guitarists. Megadeth's best albums were Rust In Peace and Countdown to Extinction in my opinion and in large part because of Marty's playing. Here's some of the tracks off his new one.

If you're trying to avoid mids, you might want to steer clear of the Chromes. The roto 77s are probably more up your alley. They start out bright but mellow out lots when they break in.

What exactly is the purpose of recording an instrument without the context of the other instruments or music that is played along too?
I honestly can't see the use for such a device... :-\

I could see it being a helpful practice tool. Especially if your getting into fretless playing and want to check your intonation.

Whatever Paul doesn't have to prove anything at this point. Big ups to little Meatloaf there.

Ever try compression wounds? They are oval wraps that have some characteristics of rounds but smoother. Ghs makes the pressure wounds and compressors for Ken Smith. The alloy of the wraps is nickel iron. For flats I don't mind the tension of La Bellas but Rotos feel way more tense to me. There's also GHS precision flats and DR makes flats. I thought the DRs were way to thuddy and had a dead E string in the set I tried. Black Diamond and Ernie Ball fall into the chromes / Fender sound.

That's because Jamerson played upright too. Those open notes are a welcome option whenever you can use them for position shifts and when playing a 4 string you need to play more vertically up and down the fret board compared to a 5 string or more bass. Rahock beat me to it. The way Jamerson played out of key open notes made them almost sound diatonic. I've had the standing in the shadows of Motown book for a long time and even though it doesn't seem like it should work, when you can nail a line like "How long has that evening train been gone", it makes perfect sense.

Glad it's working out for you. If it's any consolation, your bass is still lighter than my 78' Precision.

The Grand Funk tune was called I don't have to sing the blues. I wasn't trying to claim it was particularly bluesy. I've been listening to them often lately and jokingly used the title of the song as an excuse to post it, like summertime blues. Sorry to derail, carry on.

That Sissy Man blues is also a take on Robert Johnson's I believe I'll dust my broom. Here's ZZ top's take on it.

Maybe he didn't wear wigs or panty hose but Kokomo Arnold sings about switch hitting in a dry spell on this one.
