Other Bass Brands / Re: Vox Wyman
« on: December 08, 2013, 08:22:49 PM »
Mark mine is actually a Stinger IV (see my avatar), which is similar to the Wyman Bass but different. You'll find your Wyman has a thin neck. It's the Mk IV's and Phantom IV's that have the 2x4 necks. In case you were unaware, the Wyman bass was manufactured by two different companies. The "British Version" was made in Italy by Crucianelli which was more of a deluxe version with nice block inlays in the neck and made for JMI around 1965-66. The second and the most common version was made by Eko also in Italy but this version was made for Thomas Organ in 1967-68. My Stinger IV was made by Eko.

I read that Bill never asked for and was never consulted about the creation of the Wyman bass. He said that one day a fellow from Vox showed up and gave him the bass. When he opened the case, he was surprised to see his name on the headstock. Said he tried the bass and hated it for a host of reasons but the main one being the excessive neck dive.

You should be able to find an original Vox pickup for your bass on Ebay. I see them listed for sale regularly. Good luck with it.

As ilan mentioned in his opening thread, only 11 were made. The price is 2500 Euros each. Hofner claims that if this was to become a production model the cost would increase substantially as they would have to specifically manufacture the components to made it.

I ended up returning the MPJV for a full refund. I found the profile of the neck not to my liking. Ordered a Music Man Sterling 5-HH in its place.

These two photo are the only current group shots I have. Both basses were made in the same factory.

1968 Vox Stinger IV & 1966 Eko Cobra-II

I've been meaning to check one of these out.  Where is the truss rod adjustment at on the bass?

It's located at the heel of the neck and is a rotary type adjustment. Not the Allan key type.

Fender Basses / Fender Modern Player Jazz V
« on: September 29, 2013, 05:41:00 PM »
Last week I purchased a new Modern Player Jazz V bass. From what I can gather there aren't many of these out there yet as Fender just introduced them in late July of this year. It's a unique bass for Fender because it incorporates 4 large single coil Jazz pickups (each with 6 poles) placed in pairs of two to create 2 large humbucking pickups. There's a separate volume control for each pickup and a single tone control like most Jazz basses out there but it also has a 4-position rotary pickup selector switch that allows the player to pick between 4 preselected passive pickup combinations.

It comes with a Hi-mass bridge (almost a copy of a Badass-II) which is much more substantial than many of the bridges found on lower cost 5 string basses, I really like the vintage tinted high gloss neck and headstock. As for the neck itself, it's a big one compared to my Music Man Big Al 5-H's neck. But it's still fast and pretty easy to get around for a player with average size hands. The flat 2-tone Brownburst finish on the body is also unique. I'm a glossy kind of guy but this satin finish is really starting to grow on me.

Here's a couple of photos of the beast.

Because I'll be using this bass tuned down a semi-tone, I replaced the stock Fender strings with a set of D'Addario EXL160-5 50-135 gauge strings. A little deepening of the string slots in the nut was required to get a great setup but this way the low B remains under good tension and sounds really solid.

The Outpost Cafe / Re: McCartney's new tour

Gotta love Paul! I saw him in Toronto in '89, still the best concert I ever witnessed. He played bass, guitar, piano and sang his ass off. He clearly loved every minute of it. For me Paul can do no wrong even if he breaks into Silly Love Longs, though I'd much rather hear Jrs. Farm.

I was at that concert as well Scott. That was the Flowers In The Dirt tour. I still have the program handout from that show. It was great concert, unfortunately it was in The Skydome which has the worst acoustics.

Fender Basses / Re: Shitload new Squiers, like a Bass VI en Cabronita.

Well this is what you get for $249.00 Cdn and it weighs in at just over 10 lbs.

All in all not bad. However the neck and headstock have really little to no finish on them. I'll have to have to finish them with a high gloss lacquer in order to provide stability for the wood. Also a hi-mass bridge would be nicely suited for it. The bridge on there is pretty inexpensive looking although functional.

I have a Squier VI on order. I'm not sure if they're shipping yet.

I understanding is that they're still 3-4 weeks out.

I ordered a new Squire Vintage Modified Jaguar 5 yesterday in 3TS. I'm looking for a beater 5er. Hopefully this will fit the bill. Hell, for $249.00 you can't go wrong.
