Title: Re-discovering bands you used to like.
Post by: Blazer on July 09, 2008, 07:19:09 PM: I guess we all have had it, really big on a band, then you get side-tracked for a couple of years and then suddenly you hear something new from that band you used to like and went "WHOA!"

In my case it was Iron Maiden, as a twelve year old with my very first electric guitar I really was into them and "Somewhere in time" and "Seventh son of the seventh son" were my most played albums in my tiny collection of LP records. But then Guns N roses released "Appitite for destruction" and I found that heavy rock could be easy to play. And a few years after that Alt Rock broke and I was loving it. My mediocre skills on guitar didn't really matter anymore.

But that changed when I was watching MTV Europe's "Most wanted" as hosted by Ray Cokes in the mid nineties one evening. (This show was not a request show like the MTV USA show with the same name, "Most wanted" was a live show where Cokes would do silly stuff and have cool bands performing.) And Maiden was there with two faces I didn't recognise, Janeck Gers and Blaze Bailey. And then they started playing THIS song.

At first I went wide eyed and then I got up from my chair and started headbanging. And after the song was done I went "DUUUUDE! I need to check that album out." After that evening I was a born again metal man. "X-factor" is one of those albums that brought me back where I belong and although Blaze Bailey could never replace Dickingson, nobody can deny that this song still is a kick ass rocker.

We jammed for the first time in over 20 years that afternoon, and went to the show that night. We had a great time, and our drummer gushed over Leslie West like a 16-year-old. I talked to Richie Scarlett, who got his start with the same managers that I had used in the mid '70S.

While that can have its charm - Paul Weller is another flat singer and so is Lucinda Williams - in some music, with Heavy Metal if you don't have perfect pitch, you'd better be a little high than a little low (a quality Dickinson excels in! :mrgreen: ).

I like Maiden for what they stand: that blue-collarish working men's heavy metal with slight prog influences. They are an organic band, but their songwriting lacks finesse and sounds samey to me. Two types of songs: Ones that start fast and slow down and ones that start slow and speed up for the "Maiden gallop". I thought the New Musical Express' review of one of their mid-eighties albums brilliant which consisted of just one sentence. "One of the more remarkable albums of 1973 no doubt." :mrgreen:

I still like them. They give their fans what they want and work hard at it. But their twin or even triple lead guitar work will never reach the heights of Wishbone Ash (one of their cited influences) and Judas Priest have more class and elegance in their sound to my ears. Steve Harris is more nimble as a bass player than most metal four stringers (certainly more than Priest's Ian Hill!), but his choice of notes and rhythms never ever surprises me.

I've enjoyed the current Deep Purple lineup live, but it wasn't the kind of revelation that would make me go out and look for their latest albums. It was just a welcome change from some of the disappointments (Genesis, Canned Heat, The Yardbirds, Robin Trower). Somehow I didn't take much notice of Mountain first time round, so seeing them last year was more like discovering a new band (and they were great). And then there's Dr Feelgood, which I really didn't like at all originally, but the current lineup is one of my favourites to see live.

If your a Beatles fan I would really try to go there to see the show.

,Phil Lanzon comes across like a mix between Jon Lord and Ken Hensley, they have a new powerful drummer (Kerslake had to stop for health reasons) and Mick Box and Trevor Bolder are still on board. That new album is widely regarded as a return to form after decades.

I still think they are a bit "poor man's Deep Purple" + lush harmonies. Their influence on bands such as Styx is probably underestimated though.

They are the loudest band I have ever seen/heard. Insane volume in our home venue (The Bridgeway). Even louder than Motorhead in the same venue. Held about 1200 people back then.
Once I had the ear plugs in I could enjoy them.

Glad to hear he went to Morocco with wealthy friends & got away from it all for awhile. There's a Moroccan flavor to the acoustic stuff with Sultan.

Evidently Jimi WAS like a SULTAN himself with the exotic rugs & tapestries & so forth he bought in Morocco...& the bevy of beauties he bedded....including Brigitte Bardot!!!!

I'm readin' books about Zep, the Doors & Harrison...I've read several books about each of them & keep learning more....

Been listenin' to these Classic Rockers a lot lately tooo

Tapes were believed to be lost, but now Stills found them again at his home and plans to release them. Which - after they have worked out the legal side with the Hendrix estate - can't be much longer than in 10 years from now ... :mrgreen:

My fav track is called The Wish. AMAZING synchronized runs with guitar, drums & tablas.
There's sitar on it too but it's kind of low in the mix which is lame.

But after a while I grew tired of Thunder.

Yesterday I grabbed Laughing At Judgement Day and played it again after many years of neglect.
Man, this is a GREAT album! I'm glad I rediscovered Thunder.

I got really into MOUNTAIN again when I bought Nantucket Sleighride on cd.
I'd never bought the vinyl or cassette!! GREAT album! Tired Angels & the title track are AWESOME songs!!
Travelin' In The Dark is anuzza fav.

Tabla Beat Science with Bill Laswell on bass is a new fav that had slipped thru the cracks.

This week I've been listening to a lot of Traffic (in my car) for some reason. There was definitely a very good reason why Hendrix used Dave Mason as his number 2 man. He has some of that 'Nth' magic that Kossoff and Clapton had.

Yeah! Traffic was my fav band in the early 70s & I saw 'em A LOT including several places here in the Southland when Dave Mason toured with 'em on the WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN TOUR.
Just drove by the place where his ALONE TOGETHER album cover was shot. Beautiful hill on Topanga.
Gotta dig up that cd now....

Hendrix is at his best with Winwood on B-3 on Voodoo Chile, & with Mason helpin' out on All Along The Watchtower!!
I look forward to rainy days to put on Electric Ladyland. :mrgreen:

I rediscovered The Stooges and early Grand Funk while living in Lima, Peru several years ago. I saw The Stooges in 1969 but never saw Grand Funk. I love Mel Schacter's bass playing and sound on the first 5 or 6 LP's especially the 2nd album, the red one with the J bass on the cover. I could blast that album all night.
Same for The Stooges, especially the Raw Power stuff, I have almost all the bootleg stuff and legitimate releases. That band rocked, Raw Power has to be the most powerful and primitive stuff ever released on record. I have all three versions, the Bowie mix on LP, The Iggy mix on CD and the rough mixes, plus all the live stuff, the rough mixes that was supposed to be the second album which would have been killer. I actually like the Bowie mix the best on most songs because it's got more bottom, Iggy really unleashed it's power though, scary good.

I listened to some VH the other day & the Roth era stuff seems to hold up better than the Hagar era.
They were both pretty damn cool!! VH got overplayed so much I couldn't stand any of it for a long time.

I caught them way back about 1970-71 and they were dynamite. They played too a damn near empty house at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. Back when nobody dressed in anything but raggedy Levis, Linda came out on stage dressed to kill. Very sexy black dress , slit way up the side, 4-5" heels and overall looking just as sharp as she could , and sang "I just want to make love to you" like nobody has ever sang it before. The absolute sexiest,hottest ,female vocal performance I've ever seen :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:.......not to mention a kick ass band.

I can't believe they never went anywhere.

I was fresh out of high school , as was a drummer friend of mine who went with me.He also happens to be an albino who looks a lot like Edgar. Jonny and Edgars crew mistook him for Edgar and dragged him backstage to get ready dispite his protests. He got to meet Johnny an Edgar and the Allman bros and during their discussion they found out he was a drummer and invited up to sit in. They had two drum kits set up so they had nothing to lose. Once they got him up there and saw how good he was, they kept him up to play several tunes with both bands. The crowd loved having a local kid up there, so when the Allman bros came up they kept him going .
Talk about a dream come true for an 18 year old kid!!

There was a guitar player in my school named Darrell Jamison who was 2 or 3 years ahead of me & a year or 2 after he graduated he came back with hair to his waist to play a gig in the high school gym. The name of his band was The Belladonna Nightmare Blues Band & all of 'em had hair to their waists & played the most incredible music I've ever heard! The music swirled around us like a HURRICANE--a tremendous psychedelic tunnel of mad boogiein'!!!

I expected him & his band to get HUGE but I never heard of him or them since!
I've googled 'em & found nothin'. Alas

I'm tryin' to push my bandm8s in that direction....

He moved somewhere way up in northern Michigan a few years back, but before he moved he was hardly playing at all. It's kind of sad. When we were just kids of 14-15 years old he was the hottest drummer around.

IceHouse was an Aussie band originally called Flowers. Iva Davies was the main songwriter singer. We did a show with them in the 80's here in Adelaide at the Apollo stadium. Lovely guys and an excellent and helpful sound guy (cant remember his name now unfortunately.
