Wow!  It makes you wonder what kinds of things are stuffed under people's beds and forgotten about.

Wonder if it has a Farah Fawcett picture inside the box too? That's amazing...

Man, that's weird!

There was a Bicentennial for sale in Holland some months ago. Totally mint and 2.750 euros with original case.

Yeah, seen that one a few times before. It hasn't sold in quite some time. Either the price is too high, or people are scared to buy a box with unknown contents. Seriously, if they want to sell it, they need to show that there is a mint bass inside.

Just think though, that case has got 1970s Kalamazoo air inside it...

Or at least warrant that there's a mint bass inside or your money back.

Another problem is it does a instrument no good to just sit untouched for 30 years. If he wants to sell it he needs to take the bass out of the box period.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more ridiculous it seems. This is going for a premium (I assume) because the box is unopened, yet that will presumably be the first action of the new buyer.

But it's always that way in the world of vintage guitars. All the hype claiming how much better old instruments are because they've been played so many years, how they supposedly resonate better, etc., yet the pristine unplayed ones always have a higher price tag. So I'm not surprised that it's "make us an offer."

Still, if I were a big T-bird fan, I might be checking my bank balance right now and figuring how long I could go without eating.  :)

Honestly I don't want to piss anyone off but it's just a '77, I'm not all that wound up over it. The pickups sucked on these things, most were terribley micro phonic and had to be replaced. I was there in '76 selling these things, they were a real problem. Unplayed and unopened ? the more i think about it that is not a plus.

As I said, this has been for sale for quite some time - which says to me the price is pretty high. I suspect you'd need some serious fat reserves...

rule of threes:

3 mins no air

3 days no water

3 weeks aithout food unless you eat your young (i think), which in my case means losing about 30 pounds..might be worth it!

Or at least warrant that there's a mint bass inside or your money back.

Or a mint Farrah Fawcett(-Majors, as she was still known back then). Farrah and TBirds have one thing in common: Don't mess with the original looks, aftermarket alterations ruin the value.

Farrah insists she hasn't had any aftermarket alterations.

She's apparently fighting cancer again now.

I called the store today the owner Paul was not there so I'll call tomorrow the person I did talk to said it was Paul's bass and was legit, the bass is not in the store and is at Pauls house. I'll post when I find out more.

Best of luck to her then.

But I notice that you still haven't lost your, errm, soft spot for anemic blondes, whether they diet on apples or name their children after them.

As previously stated, I think the guy is killing his chances at selling it unless he takes it out of the box. It's still a NOS bass, in the box or out. I wouldn't think having it in the case possibly under full string tension untouched for over 30 years can be good for it. If I can't play it, or at least SEE the damn thing, the checkbook stays in my briefcase. Betcha he wants a load for it. No thanks. No wonder why it's been for sale for a while, plus, he just says 'make offer'. What do you want for the thing?????  He is probably getting a lot of low offers and wondering why he hasn't sold it.

I've always preferred brunettes, but I do have a soft spot for Farrah. We did go to the same junior high school, although we really didn't know each other beyond saying hello.

We were hoping to have apple pie for Christmas dessert but Fiona Apple didn't show up.  :rimshot:

I just got off the phone with Paul the owner, he said it was legit he thought about opening the box to check the bass because several people asked about it but doesn't want to wreck the mystery of the unopened box. He's asking $6000 for it, and I told he should sign up here and field questions. He also said he has done this sort of thing before (Unopened boxes). He seemed honest to me and said if there were any problems he would take care of the situation.

$6000 seems insane in this economy or is it just me?

The most I have seen mint ones asking for is $3500- never saw one sell for that either.
Title: Re: New In The Box Bicentennial Thunderbird
Post by: Dave W on December 30, 2008, 05:35:04 PM
I can't recall a mint Bicentennial Bird selling for over $2500. This one is untouched. If he opens the box and it has no issues, I would think he'd get more than $2500 even in this economy. $6000? I doubt it. Still, you never know, it only takes one buyer and you won't find one more untouched that this.

Somewhere in the world a currency might be doing well enough against the dollar to make that worthwhile.

Not here, that's for sure.
Title: Re: New In The Box Bicentennial Thunderbird
Post by: OVERDRIVEN66 on December 31, 2008, 02:51:19 PM
What this guy fails to realize is that once the box is opened, that it's just another bass that must stand on it's own. And it will be worth only what a mint Bicentennial is worth, and that's all. Which is $3500 balls out, shit pickups and all.  Is it worth $2500 for the rush of having opened the box?  And what good is it if it is never opened and never played?  Yet another anomaly of our beloved hobby and T-Bird lore!

I belive that is the world he is living in. I'd say 3500$ is what he is getting. The most I've seen a Bicentennial go for is 2750$. A dedicated collector might pay 3500-4000$ for it but 6000$ seems to steep for this IMO.

This guy must have almost no money in it to be pissing around with this bass for all this time just hoping he will find a buyer to 'take the bait' and cough up the dough he wants to buy it. Upon thinking about it, it's actually worth LESS to me since I can't see it, inspect it, or play it. Who knows what that bass has been through temperature and humidity wise sitting in that freekin' box for 30 years?  The more I think about it, the LESS I would even want that bass.  Interesting thread!

At first I had a stiffy over this but the more i think about this bass the less I'd want it. The best 70's Thunderbird I ever had was a '79, the pickups were powerful and full of sparkle. my '76 squeeled like a pig, just awful, I waited well over a year for replacement pick ups from Gibson.

Bones is a nice series. And talking 'bout series and Gibsons: House MD plays a nice Flying V. Very strange: I'm watching all those old A Bit Of Fry And Laurie episodes in DVD and that very, very English. A moment later I see a part of Stuart Little and House MD and Hugh Laurie is just talking American:)

I bought a Burt Reynolds biography for 1 euro once:) I just love the guy because of Boogy Nights but especially Cannonball Run, Smokey and The Bandits, BL Stryker. That's really my youth...

Sometimes I put this book on the table with that nude pic open when friends visit me, just for fun:) Mein Kampf also works for a shocking effect, but I thinks Burt wins over Mein Kampf.
