Sorta in focus, this time playing the Rickenbacker. It must have been a Who song.

This will teach you not to ask me for gig photos again.

The massive stage. The Marshall & the Orange did present a nice visual balance.

Due to the low turnout they bagged the big stage.

But the check was paid and the sound company was good. So who's complaining??

The Big Orange rig in action. Wth a Guild JSII, modded with Darkstars. My mainstay bass.

Yep, that's my license plate.

Your guitarist sounds like a very down-to-earth kind of guy, rare thing amongst them.
Also, PICS!!! :D

Right you are. Imagine this, we have to ENCOURAGE him to extend his leads. That's unheard of!!!

We landed a nice time slot on the main stage at an outdoor city festival tomorrow. It's not Woodstock or Shea Stadium, but it should be a lot of fun. PA, stage etc provided which is really nice since our PA is in my basement.

But the bands have to bring their own amps. No big deal. I mean, that's why we agonize over our rigs, right?

Last night after practice we were talking about what rigs to bring. Our leader guitarist mumbled something about bringing his little Line 6 amp since "we'll be miked anyway so it'll be fine." In fairness to him, he does get some good sound out of it sometimes. But...

Thankfully I did not have to say a word.

First our frontman exploded: "You have a beautiful Marshall half stack and you want to bring that little piece of crap??" He was referring to the sound. Then he added that we want to LOOK GOOD on stage. "This'll be a big crowd!"

Then our new drummer, a local legend who we were lucky to get, joined in: "Marshalls and Orange, my two favorite brands. I want one on each side of me."

Our poor lead guitarist asked "Well, what will DJ bring?" probably wondering if I'd bring my "small room" Sunn 200s on top of a 1x15 folded horn.

But I didn't get a chance to answer. The frontman declared "He's bringing his big Orange rig. And you are bringing the Marshall. End of discussion."

It's nice playing with guys who still care about how we look on stage rather than worrying about being able to carry your whole rig in one trip.   :)

And, it doesn't hurt that my big Orange rig sounds much, much better than any of the little mini rigs I tried when we had a 9 month residence at a club with a long flight of stairs up.

My wife & I enjoyed the laserdisc of the Spiders From Mars video tonight.

I just love the nasty bass sound Trevor got on "Moonage Daydream" and "Width of a Circle".

This is a board where most of us realize through sad experience that we will sound like ourselves rather than our heroes no matter what guitars or amps we use..... but a couple of years ago I did get inspired by Trevor Bolder and bot an EB-3-L (long scale) clone specifically and only because of the tone Bolder got on that laserdisc.  Sadly, I could not get the action down to Entwhistle levels and sold it on to someone who thought he could.

Beyond that, I could prolly get that sound if I overdrived my little Sunn 200s head.    But, it sure would have been better if I'd kept my Marshall rig.

Not that any of my musings matter.

RIP Trevor Bolder.

I'm not sure that Wetton was a better player. I'd say the opposite, but he sure could sing!

This is an interesting thread. I was introduced to Uriah Heep by a band member who ... yep, lived in Denmark & Germany for a few years. We covered Easy Living & Sweet Lorraine. Both of them were always well received. Especially Easy Living. It was really fun to play those. All four of us had to hit the mikes to nail those choruses.

He played with a really nasty tone on that Spiders From Mars concert video. So-so sound, but one of my favorite vids. But you only catch a glimpse of Bolder now & then.

Bowie shafted him & the others after that show. It was nice to see him replace Wetton in the awesome Heep.

An interesting bit of history. I'd wonderd about that. Thanks!

from my experience those are crap. and now overpriced crap.

Yeah, it's funny how brands that were universally derided at the time are now collectibles. The fog of memory...

Nicely done! There's always a isk on what neck dimensions you'll get when you buy a Rick online so glad it worked out.

Will you be parking the 78?

I think his point was that the bassist's overall "perceived sound" includes those subtle artifacts (that extra zing coming from the string noise, etc..), and by blending that in he can recreate that perceived sound once the bassist is done tracking and back in the control room.

Almost like the aim is to satisfy the bass player enough so he can mix in a good sound....

223
Many Thanks ilan. That's great!!

I have been trying to find a post on the old Dude Pit about a legendary session bass player. The comment was something like "He sounds like an old Chrysler 300 starting up on a winter day, all clangy and nosiy, but it fits right in the mix."

Or something to that effect

Do any of you oldtimers remember that?

Only out of curiousity, really... I'm not being criticized for being a sloppy player... really!

Bass Amps & Effects / Re: Bass combo amps

I have found the Genz Benz ultralights to be far superior to the much-hyped Markbass amps.

My God... Sysop! Sysop!! PBG dares to criticize the greatest amp brand ever!! He must be silenced. We can tolerate no criticism of MarkBass.

 ;)
