Now this is all second hand and prolly useless.

I just sold my pride and joy hand wired tube amp. For some good or not so good reasons.

When it arrived, the buyer (who paid a lot) was miffed that one of the four KT88s was clearly on its last legs. I wasn't aware of that so I sent him my (gently used, or so I was told) backup set, which I'd got in a trade for a couple of used GE 6550s. He said that one of that set was pretty microphonic.

The only reason I bring this up is that the tubes in question were Winged Cs. And the buyer's tech commented that, in his experience,  Svetlana Winged Cs are prone to going microphonic.

I have no opinion on the mater, but I thought it was interesting since I paid up for those tubes both in cash and trade.

Remember when Tuxes used to fetch $7-8K?

Not long ago a couple sold for just under $2000. So this may be a sign of a revival in the vintage guitar market?

Far fewer Tuxies were made than Blackstars, yet the latter recently have commanded higher prices. As an owner of both st different times I sorta get it I guess.

Wow! I had no clue they were still out there without Ian Drury. I'll have to do some web searching about it.

That said, how cool you cd watch Norman st work. He is so fun to watch. And to learn from.

Thanks fir the post.

Yeah, so I bid for the rights to host a local radio show which a few folks may listen to. The theme will be the Mike Bloomfield family tree.  Including Electric Flag, of course.

I'll have to cull down my happy list to a few songs so I was listening to "A Long Time Coming" again for maybe the 10,235th time since the album came out.

But tonight, I really paid careful attention to all of Harvey Brooks awesome bass playing on that album. Namely the use of pauses, or what you guys what call lag or something.

Only now do I realize how much that album colored my playing since then. As a ninth grader I learned the bass part to Killing Floor note for note, but I never realized old Harvey had injected me with a but of groove and jazz and whatever when I worked on learning the other songs.*

Thanks Harvey!

Seriously.

* Except that useless Wine song which is the only song someone videoed at Monterey.

Bass Amps & Effects / Tube amp heat
« on: September 27, 2014, 02:43:29 PM »
This is a probably a pretty dumb question, and I've asked you guys a few already! But since I am among friends, here's another.

Last night we played a show at a local venue we like. I wanted to use my Orange AD 200 rather than my Terror.  But the stage is a little cramped and I was in a hurry so I figured I'd only bring one 1x15" cab rather than two.

At the end of the night, I noticed the amp felt hotter than usual. When I run two cabs, I've often marveled how cool the head is at the end of the night. I mean, way cooler than the tube amps I used when I was young and handsome.

Is there any chance that running a single 8 ohm load was heating things up versus running the normal 4 ohm load with two cabs?  (I had the single cab on an 8 ohm tap so it wasn't a mismatch issue.)

I'm wondering if something is amiss in the amp. Or was I just driving the head too hard on a hot night?  The volume was pretty low since we have a big PA but I did have the gain up and was digging in pretty good.

Thanks.

"Besides, my life outside of the bass realm has taken a major kick to the teeth and I'm just now starting to recover, so I'm not so prone to be combative or even to be interested in what's going on in the world of new bass amps."

Hope you make it back part way to your old ways. You are much appreciated. Hope things get better for you all around.

Wow! There's a wealth of info! Thanks!!

I think I'll just try a Y-jack with a Rolls DB325. Use the latter simply to run the headphones.

Or perhaps the output signal will not be too hot. I'm reluctant to blow out one of my amps.

We'll see....

The minijack output is not loud enough. You can hear through the headphones but just barely.

So I'll try one of those headphone practice amp thingys off a Y jack.

Out of curiosity I Goggled Marshall Major and found there were two tone control versions as well as a guitar and bass version?

(Also found some informed comments on another board by a fellow whose name has a line drawn through it.)

Thanks PBG. But, sound-wise.... why would I buy one?

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just not familiar with it.

And how much is it due to the head versus whatever cabs someone paired it with.

Thanks.

Ah, but what if it is a bass boat?   :rimshot:

We need a drum set app here for that one!

BUt then. what is that unique sound that makes the Major so desirable?
