Copeland is - like Ginger Baker - a musicianly drummer. They don't play drums, the have an animated percussive dialogue with the rest of the music.
We've taken too much for granted ... and all the time it had grown ...

I think Lars Ulrich also attempts to play that way, but usually just ends up being annoying.  It's probably due in part to the fact that most of the songs were worked up with just drums and Hetfield's rhythm guitar.
