RIP Lemmy,
I'll always admire the bass players that don't stand in shadows.

Just heard. Not shocked but still sad.
And Stevie Wright of the Easybeats just passed yesterday.
-
TMZ reports that he died at home while playing a video game, and that he had just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer only two days ago.
-
I'm sorry to see him go but I'm glad for him that he got to go out without suffering through months or longer in agony. RIP.
-
He most certainly did not stand in the shadows. R.I.P.

RIP. Rock eternal.
-
RIP. Great bass player. I will never forget your concerts in Italy in the eighties.
-
R.I.P. Lemmy.
Admired his no bullshit approach.
-
He was one of a kind.
Farewell Lemmy.

Sad day for Rock n Roll,
I know I am biased but I think that in his way he was as great a gamechanger as Presley, Lennon or Rotten, WE will never see his like again, the phrase "they broke the Mould after making him " really applies
I don't normally get upset about celebrity deaths, but Johnny Winter going hit me in an unexpected way, and now Mr Kilmister has really knocked me for six
Even though we knew it was coming (Lemmy bailing on a gig after a couple of songs was one of the hardest things to see, I can only imagine how hard it was for him) somehow we all felt he was immortal, like Keef he had to have something special to have survived all he did to himself. I only met him once but he was everything you would expect, a genuinely intelligent nice man, his first words to me was a compliment on my shirt :)
A friend of mine summed it up
"woke up to find the world just got a little quieter"
-
everyone has a lemmy story,
Sami Yaffa just posted this :
What fckng sad news to wake up to,Heres the best live album I know ,to make the day go smooth.
I met the man first time in London-83/84, I was intimidated ,and in awe, as he was to me, a 19 year old bass player,a fckng god. I wasnt a close buddy or anything like that but kept running into him all thru the years up until last year, always had a warm hello and chat.
Years ago, in -84 on one of my usual nightly wanderings I went down to St Moritz club on Wardour street in London where Lemmy was usually feedin coins into the one armed bandit.
I stumbled in, to the below ground level club, high on smack. Lemmy kept lookin at me and caught me on my way to the toilet , lifted my bangs and saw my pinned H eyes.He proceeded to crab me by my throat and lifted me up against the wall and quietly but w a voice that froze my blood said "and what do you think you are doing..." And went on to tell about his hate of heroin, what a useless piece of shit drug it was ,and how many close friends it had taken from him.
That was one of the things that started me thinking about quitting the crap.
About 5 years later I ran into him in NYC at the toys for tots benefit. I had snorted a big line of blow, smack was a thing of the past, quit it in -84.
Lemmy walks over , lifts my bangs, looks me in the eyes and sees two giant saucers, ping pong balls bouncing into space. His response was " oh, you doin alright!"
Thats Lemmy for you, he cared, in his own way.
Honestly, one of THE biggest influences bass wise, the man had integrity&honesty like no one else, and lets face it, the man changed the music.
And also, one of THE funniest mf s ever walked on this earth.
Rest In Piece big man, everyone else pales in comparison.
Thank you
S

Don't mourn the b*st*rd's passing... celebrate the way he would have wanted it...
PLAYED LOUD ... !
-
It was time for him to go. His health was failing and he knew no other way to live but with his boots on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ8FyShfnFc
Retirement from the road wasn't an option for him, it's nice to know that he died among family and not in some dingy motel or tour bus.

Take your long ride on the silver machine then, old pal ...

Well, word has it he did swap his boots for more comfortable sneakers last few weeks... ;)
-
All the better to help him sneak past St Peter... ;)
-
No need to sneak: If there's a heaven, there must be a cloud with gun belts, studs, leather, cowboy boots in bad taste, carved up Rics, a mic stand too high, kläSSy World War II memorabilia as well as some alcohol and speed for the now late son of a vicar too. His drummer is already there waiting. The Dear Lord in his grace welcomes the righteous, not the self-righteous.

If there is one if would go there as later as possible having with me my Fender Jazz, my EB-0 and a lot of friends to play it LOUD!
Thanks Lemmy for the music, inspiration and for the fierce force given to me when I was lost in Poland

TMZ reports that he died at home while playing a video game, and that he had just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer only two days ago.
70th birthday on Christmas Eve, diagnosed on the 26th, dies on the 28th. You have to wonder if all his other health problems masked the cancer.
-
I consider that "late diagnosis, almost immediate death" a white lie, he probably knew a long time ahead and his "health and stamina problems" could not be explained with his diabetes (which he had suffered for a long time). I guess he didn't want to do a "Wilko Johnson" (the ex-Dr Feelgood guitarist who had a large, supposedly incurable tumor in his abdomen, refused treatment, did a final tour and suddenly had the cancer disappear on a wave of empathy from fans, peers and public alike) with the wider public waiting with bated breath whether he survives or not.
There was a recent, very personal interview with him in the Classic Rock mag that was already very solemn and morose in tone and basically a way of him saying good-bye to the scribe (he had befriended some decades ago). When I read that and saw the pics, I had a feeling of obituary time.
-
Diagnosis is just giving something a name, If the cancer is a rare type or a small one in a critical place you can be ill for quite a while before the Docs can definitively say what it is. Lemmy has clearly been ill for some time, I think the two days between diagnosis and death is likely an artifact of the discovery process
-
I find the words to this really profound now

i looked up johnson because i thought he had died long ago, or was that big figure i'm thinking of. anyway, he did indeed have cancer and had much of his insides removed along with a 3kg tumor. currently in recovery i wish him the best. i loved dr. feelgood.
-
Hey Nofi, you're a man of surprises, such a perennially European band, they never made it beyond opening act in the US (inter alia ill-paired with Kiss)!

And I thought you thought Dr Feelgood was a Mötley Crüe album. Shame, shame, shame - shame on me.
To me, the Feelgoods

are a bit the less glamourous, less exalted, dry-hardened version of Boston's finest (nope, not The Cars and not Aerosmith or Boston):

I'm fine with the early material too. They were a shit-hot band live. Sanctuary remains my favourite album though. Discounting the live ones which had their own special charm. I like the Peter Wolf solo stuff too.

This is the Wilko article I read this summer ‘I can’t get my head around the idea that I’ve got a future’ (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/jul/10/wilko-johnson-interview-ive-got-a-future)
Too many guys around my age passing or in dire health. Really hit home last year. I was never a Tull fan but when Glenn Cornick died last year of congestive heart failure, I noticed that we were born on the same day. Two weeks later I was in the hospital with a heart attack and kidney crisis.
And then there was Lee Brilleaux (http://www.teamrock.com/features/2014-04-08/lee-brilleaux-the-forgotten-man-of-dr-feelgood) who didn't even make it to 42.
Lee and Wilko in action.

I count him as a friend, we only meet once spent most of the day together when he came to The House Of Guitars in '86 for a meet and greet. It was my job to keep him on point and in Heineken. We did the in store, I hung out for sound check, the show and afterwards. he treated me like he had know me all his life. We had marvelous discussions about Marshalls, Thunderbirds "those muddy things", Rickenbackers and The Battle Of Britain. I smile every time I see him in a House of Guitars T shirt. R.I P. Lemmy

Me in the same House of Guitars T shirt that Lemmy is often pictured in. This came out in '86, same year I meet him. https://youtu.be/E1fP5tLo_oA

Oh my, Scott, that is a blast from the past! Incidentally: Any band YOU PLAY IN always has the bass louder than everything else!
-
EXPOSE was a volatile band in it's short history they had like 4-5 drummers even more bass players. They called me Stumpy peeps (Spinal Tap) just another in a long line of bass players lol. I never felt comfortable wedged in between the guitarist and drummer, it shows. My predecessor Glenn Gaudin (awesome bassist in his own write with a storied career in the Boston music, we have since become friends and members of a elite fraternity) plays bass on the track, I got the video, I'll take it. Hell I never saw it until about two years ago when I tracked my band mates down. A pre Scott EXPOSE once opened for Motorhead, were basically booed off stage by Motorheads rabid fans. Ha!
-
Missed him in Hawkwind... saw the next tour where they had Paul Rudolph on bass... knew of "Motorhead" from the Kings of Speed single so when it came out under the same name snapped it up and everything else that came out too... Saw the "original" line up quite a few times from clubs to (No Sleep Til) Hammersmith, which was my "local" venue... about 15 minutes on the train... I met him a few times but my fondest memory was an early Motorhead gig in Cambridge (tour in support of the Chiswick release) when I played pinball with him... he'd been whipping everyone that played him (including me) and he left me his games to get ready to go onstage... it was pretty much the entire LP with City Kids, with Motorhead first and last number...
More stories, Gents... ;)

More about Lemmy's diagnosis and last days. Sad.
He was given two to six months to live (http://www.metalsucks.net/2015/12/29/lemmy-had-tumors-on-his-brain-and-neck-was-given-two-to-six-months-to-live/) and only had two days.
-
In this interview taken in november this year his speech already sounded very slurred. I can hardly understand what he says sometimes.

Cancer took my dad after three years, a partial lung removed, as well as a kidney. He was in a lot of pain, and the pain medication took away his sense of taste. They offered him "maybe" five more years if he went to chemo, and after one session, he said screw it. He got a couple more years anyway.
To give you, and most of us probably have a story like this, an idea of how quick some cancer can be - a 10 year old boy in the school where my kids were complained of stomach pains one day, and couldn't keep food down. Ten days later, he had died of cancer that basically overtook his body.
To be honest, once the disease is going to take you, I consider it a blessing to have it come quick and be done. Seeing prolonged suffering is much harder than a sudden death.
-
its advanced cancer that is found too late that makes it seem fast acting.
-
Dad had skin cancer... diagnosis to death was 5 weeks... His doctor told us (privately) that it acts so quickly when it takes hold that he'd prefer to have this one if he had to have one... might sound odd but I got what he meant...
-
RIP Lemmy. This has hit me harder than I expected. He was one of those rockers that you just expect to last forever. A one of a kind character.
-
It's our age, Andy... all our musical heroes (or most) are just that little bit older than us, and their lifestyle is not the most beneficial for good health, and reaching 70, actively, is rare... Stones are the exception to all rules, especially Keef... but even he will pass...
-
Lemmium? (https://www.change.org/p/support-lemmy-tribute-name-newly-discovered-heavy-metal-lemmium)
-
Lemmy did not consider his music Heavy Metal.
He announced it every night as Rock n Roll...
-
It's only rock'n'roll if women can dance to it. That happened rarely at the three Motörhead concerts I witnessed over the decades. They had less chicks in the audience than Judas Priest.
But more than Rush!
-
I share the belief that this didn't exactly come out of nowhere. I thought Lemmy looked visibly weaker and smaller for much of 2015. I watched their Glastonbury set online, and there are two longish sections where Lemmy is offstage; during a guitar and drum solo respectively. The melodic and overly-lengthy guitar solo seemed oddly placed, creating a lull after the first few songs. I thought Lemmy looked ill there, with hollow cheeks and oversized aviators. Then there came the video of Lemmy stopping proceedings onstage after only playing a couple of songs. I thought his voice sounded shot there, like an emphysema patient really. I wasn't convinced he was only experiencing a transitory illness.
I guess Lemmy ultimately demonstrated that English rock stars really are just another strand of British eccentric.
-
i agree, not metal. like led zep, deep purple, scorpions and other hard rock bands that get tagged with the metal moniker. buncha' loud marshalls does not a metal band make. :o
-
It's a bit like the differentiation between erotic art and porn: "I know it when I see it!"
But it's difficult to determine a set of criteria that will always give you the right answer. I heard the newish Queensryche (post-Geoff Tate, the new singer is great, so was Tate, that rhymed ...) in the car today and I thought to myself that these guys are generally lumped together with others as thinking man's heavy metal, prog metal or melodic metal, but are they really?
Twisted Sister were regularly billed as heavy metal, but their music was actually light-weight. The Scorpions were sometimes tagged with it, sometimes not, but is their music so fundamentally different to Accept's which were always billed as heavy metal?
Manowar is of course (the one and only) "true metal" and I guess most people agree that Judas Priest, Saxon, Anthrax and Iron Maiden are (though Maiden's music is much more progish in nature than Priests), but what about Black Sabbath? Bill Ward wasn't really a heavy metal drummer at all and what's so heavy metal about the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album (admittedly the Sgt. Pepper in their canon)? Even Priest would frequently stray from the recipe.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEw8GwNjOwU
OTOH they sure knew how to turn rock'n'roll into heavy metal too, to many a sacrilege of Mr Berry's most famous work, but I think that is one of the most daring covers of an old chestnut, love the harmony guitars :
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x42qsj_judas-priest-johnny-b-goode_music
The Heavy Metal Kids weren't heavy metal at all and the first band I read about that openly described itself as heavy metal in the mid-seventies was BÖC, yet for all their dark image Bloom's men were more of a versatile pop group, adept at many styles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVJwpv1vMjI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBdz7Ks15II
And before they were discovered as godfathers of punk, the MC5 were filed as heavy metal too (though really only their live album could be called that in places).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XhQRFO4M7A
Ok, Metallica and Megadeth are metal. Dio said he was.
Essentially, heavy metal is a child of hard rock/heavy rock of the 70ies and that was in turn a child of the blues rock (they have that focus on riffs in common) boom of the late 60ies. The ingredients of Sunshine of your Love and Enter Sandman are not that different.
As I said: Whether girls dance to it gives you a pretty good clue!

I never thought of Motörhead as a metal band but they often associated themselves with metal acts, so no surprise that someone came up with the Lemmium idea. Definitely a headbanger band, not rock 'n' roll dance music. And almost as loud as Disaster Area (from the Hitchhiker's Guide).
-
So, does this mean Lemmy's spending a year dead for tax reasons...? (Hitchhikers in-joke)
Funeral service is streaming live 1530 PST this coming Saturday, which if iirc is 0030 GMT this Sunday...

I've been following this - so Motorhead is head-banger but not metal or rock n'roll (agreed on the latter)?
How would the others here classify them?
-
LOUD .When i saw them in Wellington NZ in 1983 i was exceedingly pleased i had my earplugs. I remember between tunes Lemmy played a few runs and bends on the verge of feedback and said ahh thats enough of that s**t....
-
So, does this mean Lemmy's spending a year dead for tax reasons...? (Hitchhikers in-joke)
That's exactly what came to mind when I heard Lemmy had passed, if only because Motörhead's shows were so insanely loud. I've wondered more than once if Lemmy and Motörhead were Douglas Adams' inspiration for Hotblack Desiato and Disaster Area.
-

Metal in my book too. Never much of a Pantera fan though, the intentionally disjointed nature of the music and the "I have one emotion only and that is anger"-vocals tire me out quickly.
And the test: Girls won't dance to it, so it must be metal.
Lemmy's claim to Motörhead not being metal (though both his co-musicians in the current - or last - line-up stem from arch-metal bands, namely Mercyful Fate and NWOBMsters Persian Risk) is mainly based on the fact that the songs stayed short and there were little and only short solos (though live the guitarist's stand-alone solo spot could be endless as Lemmy would need that time to catch his breath for some years already) as well as the absence of sword and scorcery lyrics plus a certain punkish, man-of-the-people, non-grandeur attitude in the live delivery. All other musical ingredients - the double bass drum excesses, the riffing guitar, the eighth and sixteenth note "rhythm guitar bass" playing - are/were very much metal. Motörhead was certainly more heavy metal than Hawkwind ever was.
-
... I've wondered more than once if Lemmy and Motörhead were Douglas Adams' inspiration for Hotblack Desiato and Disaster Area.
Hate to say, but iirc it's Pink Floyd... set the controls for the heart of the sun... a year out of GB for tax reasons... and lavish stage sets... there is other evidence too
As for Hotblack Desiato... it's a genuine North London property sale company that still exists...
-

I had read the story about Adams driving through a north London suburban neighborhood and seeing Hotblack, Desiato & Co. on property for sale signs, calling Mr. Hotblack and getting permission to use the name. As for Pink Floyd, I wouldn't have guessed since I know almost nothing about their story.

Sounds like Blackmore 100%. He has had tour managers stark naked in bondage dangling from the rafters at Rainbow concerts. Not always did his "practical jokes" go down well: He once provoked otherwise docile and peace-loving "hippie" Roger Glover so much that Glover chased him around the house with a knife ready to stab him after some Blackmore prank during his sleep. Blackmore was cowering terrified in the corner - the joke had turned bad - and the other Purplites held Roger back - laughingly and with some Schadenfreude about Blackmore who had done similar things to everyone of them before.

This is sad. Lemmy Kilmister Official Cause of Death Revealed (http://loudwire.com/motorhead-lemmy-kilmister-official-cause-of-death-revealed/)
Seems he was in a lot worse shape than we thought.
I hesitated to post this, the man is gone, let him rest in peace. But he was famous, and people want to know.
-
It's a positive rather than a negative, Dave... too many people avoid the simple checks that would show such a thing... same thing took my granddad at age 74...
-

Just go and get checked guys!
Frank Zappa same thing.
-
For all we know, he may have had multiple checks, of prostate and of his heart. That may not have mattered. He may have known and chosen to keep going as long as he could. As Uwe wrote in post #18 of this thread,
I consider that "late diagnosis, almost immediate death" a white lie, he probably knew a long time ahead and his "health and stamina problems" could not be explained with his diabetes
It just kind of threw me for a loop reading this. First we heard it was an aggressive cancer, then we heard it was head and neck cancer, now it turns out that he had that but the cause of death was yet another kind of cancer plus congestive heart failure and arrythmia. Yet he kept plugging away.
-
Maybe it was better to go out fighting with his boots on, than to die miserable, old and possibly incontinent in a nursing home.
-
he dropped dead playing a video game at home. as sick as he was he could still care for himself.
-
What Ken and Rob say: Go to those check-ups (I do). They might not always save your life, but they surely give you the chance to decide about treatment or not while it is still reasonably possible. Other people around you might want to spend time with you a little longer. Edith throws fits when I miss one and is always chasing me.
It's important to discuss this because Lemmy didn't set a great example here. A prostate check-up takes about half an hour of your life - it might even be a pleasant one! Untreated prostate cancer will take it all. Unpleasantly.
-
Prostate checkup is way quicker than that if you just get it done along with the rest of annual physical (which you are doing anyway, RIGHT?).
-
Not annually, but whenever my doc pesters me to! With prostate I'm more disciplined because I find the thought discomforting to have cancer emanating from there of all places. Or perhaps I just like to repeat my standard joke to my doc on a regular basis: "Leave the gloves off, after all we know each other well and it's more personal that way!"
-
