The Outpost Cafe / Canada's cultural contribution
« on: May 17, 2012, 06:10:16 AM »
The great folks from the Great White North send us Red Green via PBS.  You know it's good when the wife says, "That's not funny, why do you watch it?"  Duh!

The Outpost Cafe / Hendrix lives through his family!
« on: May 08, 2012, 05:55:52 AM »
I had a treat last night at band practice.  Reggie Hendrix, a second cousin of Jimi came to jam with us.  He lives in Rochester and works with our lead guitar player.  It was incredible to hear him play.  Yep, he's left handed and an amazing guitarist and singer.  He's going to do guest appearances with us when we play, so I'm looking forward to that!  I'll be recording some tunes we play with him in a week or two and share them.  What fun!

The Outpost Cafe / Name that band contest!
« on: May 04, 2012, 05:03:15 AM »
OK, I know we have lots of imagination and creativity here, so I'm opening up the opportunity to help us name our band.  I know I'll probably regret this, but I love to laugh and you all certainly can invoke that!

We have a constant in that the word ROC has to be in the name since we will play at the ROC Cafe.  Around here, ROC is shorthand for Rochester.  So, what would you name a band of old farts playing 60-70s R&R?  The winner gets an all expenses-paid virtual online vacation to Croatia!!! ;D

Current attempts that I didn't like:  ROC Dogs; Still-ROC-In; and some other stuff I've forgotten already!

Rickenbacker Basses / Hipshot RIC bridge
« on: March 27, 2012, 04:46:41 AM »
Anyone try, or even see, one of the Hipshot replacement bridges for a 4003?  I'm curious about them.  I have one of their replacement bridges on a TB and it is excellent.

Rickenbacker Basses / Need help with 4003 saddles
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:53:45 AM »
I put some TI flats on my new 4003 and they are so nice on this bass.  However, I like really low action and I have the bridge/saddles all the way down to the point the two allen adjustment screws will fall out.  Any good way to get the saddles any lower?  I'm about to loosen the strings and peek under the bridge to see if there's any more room to lower it.  I don't want to file the notches in the saddles unless I can have a backup set for future use.  Any suggestions RIC folks?

Bass Amps & Effects / Need an ext 15" cab, got ideas?
« on: March 18, 2012, 11:04:27 AM »
What do you guys recommend?  I want an external 15" cab for my Scout amp so I can run two 15s instead of the 12 and 15 I have now.  Any suggestions on good quality ext cabs that don't cost an arm and a leg?  The Scout is a 300 w amp.

Anyone know anything about these:  Traynor TC115 400w 15" Bass EXT Cabinet

Gibson Basses / GAS strikes again!
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:37:35 PM »
Actually gave the new oversized LP a good run through today and really liked the neck and the sound of the pups.  Yes, it's heavier than your average bass, but no more so than my LP Triumph, which I play all the time.  Couldn't help myself.  The neck is thinner and narrower than previous LPs. according to my comfort with it.  So, it's home and sounds great through the Fender TV amp.............

Do you agree with my assessment of the neck Uwe or is it in my head????  It sure feels good and comfortable to play.  Not a commonality with my previous LP basses.

Saw one of these at the shop today.  What a beauty!!!  Really nice finish and blocks on the neck.  If I were to buy a jazz, this would be the one!

Rickenbacker Basses / Newer Ric necks
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:03:52 AM »
I thought I read somewhere that the newer Ric 4003 necks were not as thick as they used to be.  Is that true?

The Outpost Cafe / Sniper sighting
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:27:01 PM »
I was wondering where our buddy Sniper (aka CW) had gotten off to and he called me today.  Seems he took a tumble down a flight of stairs at the post office.  He had a concussion and injured his leg.  He ended up in the hospital and they have been treating him for an infection in his leg for over 2 weeks.  He reports it is finally getting better and he is on the mend.

He doesn't have access to the net in the hospital, so he has been out of touch.  Keep him in your thoughts and prayers guys!

Fender Basses / 71 Telecaster bass value?
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:36:50 AM »
I'm looking at a really nice 71 tele bass, I think the last year they used the old single coil pup.  It's in 9/10 condition and I seriously want this thing.  What do you think it's value is?  I know it's not sky high being a 71 (I could never afford a 60's version), but I was thinking $3000 or so?  Am I off or on target?  Opinions are welcome!!!   :)

The Bass Zone / Mic picking up bass, causing feedback- other issues
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:28:30 PM »
When I was at practice this week, I noticed that my mic (I do sing some backup once in awhile) was picking up my bass and causing some feedback and other weird sounds through the sound system.  Any suggestions how I might minimize this?  I was thinking a highly unidirectional mic aimed away from my amp with a screen might help.  Any audio engineers or wannabes in the crowd who can help?  I don't have a problem buying a good mic if that's what it takes.

Also, I notice a lot of resonance issues when I hit an open E or a B.  It vibrates the drummer's bass drum like crazy and then ends up distorting my notes.  I realize we have a resonant frequency issue here between us and I'm going to move my cabs as far away from him as I can.  The drummer is also considering a screen since our club is small and we are in tight together when we play.  I suspect that could also end up deflecting some of my sound waves, although low frequency waves are more prone to vibrate any surface they encounter vs. bounce off like mid and high frequencies do.

Any practical suggestions and theorizing is appreciated!
