Bass Amps & Effects / Full tube amp?
« on: March 25, 2013, 04:59:21 AM »
I'm thinking I'd like to try a full tube amp on down the road.  I love the sound of my Mesa Walkabout, with just a tube pre-amp.  As a youth, I naturally only played through full-tube amps (Ampeg).  Thought it might be fun to try again.  Been searching around for something reasonable and entry level.  Any suggestions?  I found the EBS line and Bugera.  Anyone know anything about these buggers?  Unlike Mark, I did like the tone of the new Bassman 100T at the full 100 watt setting, but the price is up there.  Just wondering what you guys think.

Bass Amps & Effects / Going to add a cabinet
« on: March 21, 2013, 07:06:18 AM »
I've been mulling this over for months and I think I'm going to add a cabinet to my Mesa rig.  I've been waffling between a 15" vs. 4x10.  I already have a great 15" Mesa cab, but I want more bass than the 1x12" Scout main cab is giving me.  Our club is small, so volume isn't an issue.  I just want more bottom end and I want it to be relatively clean, not muddy.

What do you think?

The Bass Zone / The best sounding basses
« on: March 19, 2013, 06:54:35 AM »
Well, after putzing around with numerous basses I have finally realized that I have some wonderful instruments and there are a couple standouts among them.  I've been looking for that near-perfect combination of tone, output and playability in my basses and here's what I've discovered:

Solid bodies:  my 92 T-Bird reverse Special Edition is the best IMHO in a 34" scale.  Easy to play and wear and it kicks butt.  My bandmates love it, too.

Solid SS:  The 72 Triumph takes the prize here.  Great tone and a breeze to play.  A bit heavy, but that's manageable.

Hollow body:  First place is my Hofner Club.  Sounds great and is a gem to wear and play.  I can even get a nice mid-high range tone out of it to cut through the racket created by my bandmates.

So, these are the basses showing up to practice and gigs these days.  I could easily live with the TB and the Club and nothing else!

What's your favorite/s?

Bass Amps & Effects / Fender Pro series
« on: March 15, 2013, 04:57:30 AM »
Well, I stopped by the HOG the other day and saw these brand new Bassman Pro amps and cabs and I really liked the look and sound.  I was really enjoying the Bassman 100 head with six 10" speakers.  Wow, what power and sound.  Tubey goodness with a tube pre-amp!  I really liked the 2 channel set up with one channel clean and the other overdriven with a switch to jump back and forth between them.  They also have a cut power switch on the back to change the output from 100 to 25 watts and a really nice switch to flip between 2, 4 and 8 ohms.  Really nice feature too.  The master volume also has a pull feature for muting.  I am really impressed with the little features and the sound of this beast.

I'm having a bit of a GAS attack!!!

Gibson Basses / Another bass RI
« on: January 22, 2013, 09:20:02 AM »
I was chatting with Kurt at the HOG and he said Gibson is gonna come out with a 335-archtop style bass (aka EB-2 in the old days).  Should be interesting to see if they actually do it and what the price point will be.  I'll post again if I get more info on it.

I need a blank Fender style bass bridge plate.  I've been searching everywhere for one.  Anyone know where I might find a source?

The Outpost Cafe / My band is better than yours!
« on: December 20, 2012, 01:49:34 PM »
OK, it's Christmas, I'm happy to be alive and I'm feeling nostalgic.  It's also time to have some fun!  My wife and I met at Ohio University 30 years ago!  It holds a special place in our hearts.  We had our 30th. anniversary last month!  And, we really miss the band.  The football team sucks regularly (just like the Bills here in western NY), so we feel at home here.

Anyway, this is a great band.  Lots of fun and entertaining!  Go Bobcats!   (this is your fault Al, always talking about  the Cougars got me reminiscing).

Gibson Basses / New string choice for Gibsons
« on: November 19, 2012, 05:47:17 PM »
Some of you might remember that I've always been a TI flats fan.  Recently, I've been trying the TI jazz rounds on my new basses and I am really liking them!  I put them on the NR reissue and the Midtown and the basses really boom and resonate.  The TIs have several advantages from my viewpoint.  First, they are lower tension and lighter gauge than most round strings.  Easy to play and bend, if you're into that.  Second, the outer wire wraps are much smaller and closer together than most rounds, thus they feel much smoother than typical rounds and are easier on your fingers.  They have that signature round wound ring and clarity to them and I'm leaving them on the two new Gibson.  They sound great and I love the way they play.  Overpriced and maybe overrated?  A little maybe, but I am sold on them for now unless there is a very close alternative.  Do you know of any?

The genuine Gibson rounds that came on the two basses could be used to cut down tree limbs for cryin' out loud!

Gibson Basses / Midtown bass now in too
« on: November 07, 2012, 02:07:34 PM »
I just missed Scott at the HOG today.  I played the new cherry Midtown and liked it.  The neck doesn't stick out as far as my EB-650, so it's more comfortable.  The neck has a nice trimmer 60's EB-0 style profile.  It feels a bit heavier than an EB-2 since the back and sides are a solid carved out piece of mahog.   It has a volute, which I'm not crazy about, but maybe it does make the neck stronger.  Overall, it's harmless, doesn't get in the way when playing.  Very nice binding on the edges and neck.  Plugged it into an Ampeg combo with 15" speaker and it sounded really nice.  The 34" scale really does boom and the resonance of the body is quite pleasing and full.  The new Gibson pups are nice and sound much better in this bass than they did in my previous SG bass.  A good marriage with the hollow body  (oops, semi-hollow body).

The neck pup screws were not protruding through the cover as they should, so I left it there for the repair guy to adjust.  Gibson quality control!  I refuse to fix brand new basses myself!  Will be fixed tomorrow, so I might go pick it up if I can tomorrow or Friday.  Pics to follow after that........

Other Bass Brands / Bought the Hofner Prez/Stu whatshisname bass
« on: August 11, 2012, 11:43:03 AM »
I went by the HOG today and saw the Hofner President bass was still there, so I snagged it.  Short scale, incredible build, every bit as nice as my old Gretsch 6072, but lighter, 30" scale and just as good sound through my amp. The bass sounds really nice with those retro pups.  I'll be removing the rounds for some flats.   Even got a Hofner case for it.  Pics soon.

OK, some of us highjacked the Mustang thread over in the Fender sub forum.  So, I thought it would be fun to do a thread on cars since we haven't talked cars recently.

Here's my two current "loves."  I love the GT to death (4.6 l of rip roaring fun) and the 912 is a kick to drive, but very temper-mental.  Constantly fighting oil leaks.

Fender Basses / Fell for another Jazz bass
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:17:25 PM »
I stopped in just for a few minutes to chat with my favorite sales guy about my long awaited Hofner Club.  He was on the phone so I wandered around the shop and made the mistake of picking up one of those new road worn Fiesta Red Jazz basses.  I've never been all that fond of reliced basses, but this one looked really cool and played sooooo nice.  Well, you know the rest of the story.  I put a deposit down and will pick it up after I sell a few odds and ends.  Pics when I get it.   I am so weak!   :-\
