Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Binding riddle
« on: December 10, 2013, 12:01:17 PM »
OK, answer me this.  When I toured the Gibson factory in Memphis last summer, I was amazed at the binding process.  First, the body was clamped on a stand and then the full length of the binding strip was run through a glue box by hand.  A simple wood box with holes on each side, one in the top to hold the binding down in the liquid glue.  After the box, the worker had cloth-like gloves and would run the wet binding through his fingers to while off excess glue.

Then, he would run the binding around the body, starting at the neck heel and going to the butt of the body.  He would wipe excess glue off the body with his gloved hands and then secure the binding with a super long piece of narrow linen that could be used for the entire body in one strip.  He would place the binding on the second half of the guitar and then wrap the rest of it.  The process was done twice for top then bottom, so there was a drying time in between sides.  The linen wrap just peeled right off between sides and didn't stick to the glue!!

The guitar was set aside to dry and several hours later it went to the sand man who sanded off all of the excess glue by hand.  Yes, they sand the entire body to remove the excess glue.  That way, the binder doesn't have to worry about glue residue and just wipes it down occasionally as he goes along with his cloth gloves.

What fascinates me is how easy the gluing process was and the binding was as limp as a spaghetti noodle!  Most of the binding I've ever used is very stiff and I've had to pre-form with heat before gluing.  The Gibson process is so simple and easy.  I watched him completely bind a couple guitars (335s) in just a few minutes.

So, where do they get that wonderfully flexible binding?  And what is that glue they are using?  Is the wrap made out of linen?  I would love to know the answers!!!!

Gibson Basses / Surprise Gibson bass!
« on: November 19, 2013, 02:04:01 PM »
Walked into the HOG today looking for my Mesa amp pedal and look what jumped out at me.  A Midtown Signature Bass.  Yep, a take off on the LP Signature in a Midtown body.  I couldn't help myself.  It's beautiful and sounds better (just by chance) than my cherry Midtown.  Of course, it's nowhere to be found on the Gibson web site, as far as I could tell.  It's the same dimensions as the Midtown, but with the smaller lower horn.  34" scale.  Gold top and bottom.  You have to admit, it's kinda cute.

Bass Amps & Effects / Turn on, turn off
« on: November 07, 2013, 06:10:39 AM »
Now that I've been using tube amps for a year or more, I saw in my Mesa manual, and read somewhere else, that you should always turn tube amps on and off via the standby switch.  So I've been doing that, i.e. always having the standby switch set to standby before turning the amp on or off.

The other day I forgot and flipped my amp off using the on/off switch and heard a loud pop as she powered down.  I don't recall reading about that, so do you folks think it's typical or unusual?

Anyone have a Guild bass or guitar control cover they could trace for me?  Like the one on an M-75 or 85?

Bass Amps & Effects / Amp merry-go-round (B-12)
« on: October 25, 2013, 05:28:44 AM »
Well, gear hound (I know, that's an understatement) that I am, I've been trolling for a B-15 for a couple years and found a pretty nice B-12 (same amp, smaller speaker).  Not collector quality, but in good shape for its age.  I had a B-15 as a kid, back in 1963-4.  It was a great little amp, so I decided it would be fun to have one at home for old time's sake.  The 12" speaker will be fine for noodling around.  I got a good deal on this one.  The amp and cab are original, but the speaker and speaker cable were replaced.  No big deal.  Can't wait till it gets here.

Gibson Basses / 69 EB-0 and MM amp
« on: September 06, 2013, 05:59:03 AM »
OK, on a lark, I took my beat up 69 EB-0 to practice on Monday.  I bought a couple years ago cheap because some douchebag carved his initials in a small square ( 3/8" x 3/8") on the back.  I was gonna rehab it, but have been too busy to mess with it.

So I plug it into the MusicMan 130 and it kicks butt with ancient rounds on it!  It was so nice and not muddy or boomy at all.  I did turn the treble and mid dials up and that helped it out.  That pup and tube amp combo really worked!  Needless to say, it sounded good and they are always a joy to play.  Love that neck.  As I'm aging, I'm finding it harder to play my 34" basses for extended gigs.  So, it was fun to see how this would go and it was a pleasant surprise!

I'm taking the Triumph next week.

The Bass Zone / Takin a break
« on: May 26, 2013, 01:57:03 PM »
Things are getting hectic and I've been having difficulty with computer related back issues. So, I will be taking a break from all computing, including the forum for awhile.  I might pop in once in awhile, but I will be absent for long stretches.  Keep on truckin and best wishes.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Planning the new bass
« on: April 21, 2013, 11:42:25 AM »
I'm starting to plan the new bass I'm gonna build in May.  It's similar to the 4005, but not an exact copy.  It will be this design:

The body will be a hollowed out mahogany, like the Midtown/RIC design. A flat top.  I'm thinking spruce with a raised (about 1/8") mahogany strip down the middle (ala T-Bird), wide enough to accomodate a single Thunderbucker pup and ring.  F-holes will probably be there as well.  I am also toying with the idea of a string through design to eliminate the need for a tailpiece and use some sort of Tune-o-matic or Scott's TB style bridge.  I think it might be cool to have the strings coming up through the mahogany stripe.  Bolt on necks for the first few runs.  Natural finish, clear coat.

What do you think?  I'm thinking of calling it the Dr. ROCit model.   ;D

Other Bass Brands / Guild Starfire reissues
« on: April 18, 2013, 05:11:50 AM »
I thought it would be fun to start a new thread on these incoming basses.  The guys at the HOG said they played them at NAMM and really liked them.  Made in Korea, the list of $1599 should yield a street price of around $1100.  Not too bad.  It sure is an accurate looking reissue, that's for sure.  The big question in the equation is the Guild Bi-Sonic pup.  No info or specs available on it.  It could be good, it could be not so good!  The web site also says with case, so that's a nice touch too.

I happen to have two Darkstars that could help this one if needed!   ;)

I always liked the Rivoli RI from Epi, but the pups were real dogs IIRC.

Say, there is a nice little video of a guy playing the Starfire.  Very mellow, sweet sound he's getting out of it.

Bass Amps & Effects / Sunn 200s
« on: April 02, 2013, 08:18:27 AM »
So, I've read some reviews of the Sunn 200 s and it sounds like a nice amp.  Could easily handle my cafe gigs.  What do you folks know/think about this amp?

Bass Amps & Effects / Music Man HD-130 and Ampeg cab review
« on: March 28, 2013, 07:36:34 AM »
Got the two hooked up today and I am very happy.  The amp arrived in perfect condition and married to the new Ampeg PF115HE 15" cab, it sounds great.  I didn't always believe you could hear the difference between SS and tube amps, but I believe I can easily discern it in this rig.  The real difference I notice with the MM head is the richness of the bass tonality and, interestingly, the speaker seems to be able to handle more volume with less effort/degradation of the sound.  The speaker performs better with this amp than with the SS Mesa.  The overall sound of the amp is clear and clean at lower volumes.  When my wife isn't around I'll crank it and see what happens!  She gets rattled when i do that.

I really like the simplicity of the controls.  I've never been all that found of 6 knob EQ systems, more hassle than they are worth IMHO.  The difference between the "Normal-Bright" and "Normal-Deep" switches is striking and really a nice feature.  I can go from really deep and thumpy to crispy and edgy with the flip of one or two switches.

My next experiments will involve playing with variations in the master vs. channel volume controls and mid-treble differences.

Thus far, the sound, power and tone of the amp-speaker combo is just what I had hoped for.   We'll see how things sound at our next practice with 2 15" cabs and some real volume.  A good report!
