Yes, MIJ.

I got one like this from Krazy Kat in the mid 90's for $300, loved it, wish I'd kept it. Might have pawned it, can't remember.

"Sting inlay"............. ;)

Older MIJs aren't cheap anymore, even at Krazy Kat.

Nice score!
Since I bought my 51 butterscotch RI a couple years ago, I can't leave it alone. My 70 P rarely finds its way out of the case anymore.
My initial response to the 51s was pretty lukewarm. I thought the neck was too fat, the single coil pickup too raw and the bridge was too primitive.
I played it for about 30 minutes and got the feel of it, and that was all it took . I love it. ;D

The bridge would be no problem for me, it didn't bother me when I had my 77 Tele Bass. And I alway liked the original single coil sound.

But the neck of the recent MIJ 51 RI is just too big for my left hand. I don't remember ever trying one of the earlier issues like this, maybe the neck isn't as big.

Oh, go on, rub it in.  I'm jealous. There was a butterscotch one went last night for under $600, but with shipping and tax it would have ended up more than I wanted to pay. So I let it go. I like big necks too.

Are the new Classic Series ones MIM?

I'd have to check mine , but I think it's an 89. The neck is pretty fat. There are fatter necks out there , but by any standards, it's fat. Compared to my 70 P, it's REAL fat and that was initially a big turn off for me. I got over it  quick and it feels just right  to me now. I still have a very slim neck Olympia ABG (sort of a Jazz Bass feel) and real open beyond the 12th fret. They are very different, but both feel good........just different.

I was never a fat neck kinda guy, but on this bass,  for lack of a better explanation.........fat is where it's at ;) It just seems to fit .

That was on the tip of my tongue!!!

With or without Stinglay: These are my favorite items from "that Californian company", I love that single coil, both looks- and soundwise.

A friend of mine bought a Sting one recently. She likes it much, but I haven't tried it out yet. Nice score, this one!

I had a Butterscotch CIJ, very nice bass. Love the Sunburst

Brown truck brings it to me Monday! I'm thinking a pickup cover (and a thumbrest of course) should complete the look.
