Title: Cheap Bass Strings
Post by: lowend1 on April 22, 2009, 12:55:45 PM
I ordered 10 sets (45-100 only). Cost me $6.60 with free shipping. I s**t you not! ;D

Ok, this is final proof - we're in a deflation!!!   :o

I assume they're rounds...or I might go after that!

I still have about 10 sets of Hartke rounds from the closeout deal SamAsh had a couple of years ago when I bought my Hartke 1400 head.  Got three boxes of roundwound bass strings (either three or five sets per box, don't remember which) with the head....haven't used them up yet.

I figure if I get ONE good set out of the bunch - it's still cheap!

You might not. They're the sort of dreadful quality Chinese strings that come standard on $99 basses. Still, at that price you could get your money's worth and more.

People rag on the SX OE strings all the time, but of the three SX basses I've bought, two still have the originals. The third (a P-thingie) just needed something a little more substantial than the ultra-lights it shipped with. I remember getting a deal on Danelectro bass strings a few years back that I thought was the shiznit until I realized they were 50-110s. To a guy like me who likes lighter gauges it was like playing on bridge cables.

The only really dreadful strings I have run into on a bass was the factory set on my Rogue VB-100.  They were very light gauge rounds, and they sounded so tinny and awful that I wondered if the bass was salvageable.  Installing a set of LaBella Hofner Beatle Bass flats (.050-.100) changed the whole character of the instrument - and radically for the better.

No offense to anyone but I doubt these are in the same league as Webstrings.

Steel is an international commodity. When you see a product retailing at a price you would expect a manufacturer to pay for raw materials, then something is up.

Obviously these aren't going to be top quality strings - no argument there. Still, I'm curious as to what kind of bang for the buck I'll get at 66 cents per set.

I get a whole lot of years out a set of chromes or tapewounds too. Buying strings 10 sets at a time would be way too optimistic on my life expectancy .

I'm too a webstringer. I prefer stainless 50-110 thru. Also, I've stringed my P copy with their flatwound 50-110 set and it sounds very good (for a f****r).

I havent had a problem with the Warwick reds and yellows that I have used on a few basses in the last 5 years either. The webstrings just suit me more.

hi, i'm nofi and i love Fenders. there. i have owned a couple dozen p bass, jazz and teles in my life and love em all. except the mocha (turdburst) p bass i had. :P  i have had a few gibsons but i was not impressed. the only one i liked was an old ripper because it felt most like playing a FENDER to me.

whew! i feel liberated AND somewhat cleansed.  ;)

 Careful nofi, there may be a 12 step program in order.
My 2nd bass was an EBO , 3rd was a similar, EPI and 4th was an EB2. I hopped the fence for a P Bass in 1970 (still got it) and although I've had a few others brands since, my keepers are 2 Fenders and my Earthwood and Olympia  accoustics.
I didn't intend to become a bigot....it just happened :-[ ;)

No reason anyone should ever apologize for loving Fenders. Even here in a forum dominated by Gibson bass fans, there's probably a good number of Fender owners.

Rick, no offense taken, some jokes were made at the time.

Long story short: cousin who was born and raised in Houston died in an accident in 1992. Young, unmarried, no social security death claim was made, so SSA didn't know he had died.

In 2004 an uncle found that my dead cousin was now listed in the Houston phone book! Very Germanic name, he was named after my great-grandfather. Uncle called, and got a man with a heavy Spanish accent who could barely speak English. We investigated, found he was using my cousin's SSN and birthdate.

I went to a DPS investigator who got the ball rolling. When they confronted the guy, they had my real cousin's high school yearbook with the names covered. Of course he couldn't identify any of his classmates, and he confessed after they pointed out that one of the ones he couldn't identify was actually a pic of my cousin.  :)

Yes, he was an illegal alien. And he got away with this for about 7 years! He slipped up when he bought a house and forgot to tell the phone company he wanted an unlisted number. D'oh!

ok, stringfellows. how often do you change your strings?  ??? .the strings on my Ripper are over 2 1/2 years old!   :) no rust. they still look clean & sound great.and i play that bass twice a week at practice.3-4 hour sessions.i play with a pick.i play really really fast punk/hardcore/thrash.i almost never break strings but i play really hard and beat the shit out of my bass ??? .but i play between the neck and pup.when i was younger i played by the bridge and broke strings all the time.but used whatever. i've been using GHS Boomers 105-45 since the mid 90's.i use 'em on my Geetar as well. they last forever.other strings i've tried rusted, :-[ went dead  :o or broke.  >:( i have roto sounds on my peavey T-40 and they feel too rubbery kinda soft and stretchy. :-\

Depends on what bass and how often it gets used.

I like a bit of a piano wire sound to my Jazz and that gets used most so I change strings on that about 5 times a year. With the Stainless rounds 45-105 Webstrings I use that means a cost of about Aus$100 a year (US$75). I cant even buy 2 sets of Rotos for that price here  AND I prefer the sound and feel of the Webstrings.

The Allen Woody gets Smith Short rounds (44-106) that cost me about US$20 a set. Normally I would change these about 3 times a year.

Cargill custom fretless has had the same set of ancient Roto's RS66's for about the last 6 years.

The Explorer now gets the Webstrings the same as the Jazz and will probably get changed once a year.

The others get changed as required.

D'addario  chromes on two Fender Ps  that are about 5 years old and they're good for a few more miles. I've also got about five years on a set of La'Bella tapewounds  on my Olympia and they are still fine too. The Olympia and one of the Ps see plenty of action . No immediate plans for a string change on anything......no need 8)
I never got that kind of mileage out of round wounds.

i use dean markley blue steel 105-45 rounds on my eb4l and my eb2.i pay about $25 us for them and i change them about every 3 months when i cant stand the loss of tops anymore.i have also used warwick black rounds, they are good.im just wringing out a set of dr hibeams that i tried as an experiment-not bad, but im not sure these.

My oldest strings are on my '63 P - flats that I know have been on it since at least 1972.

My 2000 MIM Jazz has the original rounds on it...I'll say 9 years old.

My other basses have flats varying from 1-4 years old.  Most are LaBella Deep Talkin' flats which have a reputation for aging well.  I also have some nicely aged Roto 77's.

If I like the sound, then I never change strings unless one breaks.  I've never broken one.

Geez, I'm proud n'humble.  But Dave has a great memory - the bass mostly sat in its case between 1973 and 1997.  I know my younger brother played it a bit in the 70's, but how much I dunno.

I will say that since I like the sound of this bass with these strings, I've decided that strings are forever until they break.  If I like 'em, I just keep 'em on.

Here it is.

Here's the headstock - and yes, you purists, it's not a '63 neck, it's a '72 neck because the truss rod broke in the original neck, and I had to re-neck it for a gig the next day.

Anyone know what brand of flats used this color of silk wrapping back in the late 60's / early 70's?  They seem to last pretty darn well!

Could they be GHS Precision Flats? They've had purple silks for years, but I don't know if they did back then. Company's been around since the mid 60s, IIRC.

No matter what kind or brand, I keep strings on until I think they sound bad or until they won't intonate properly.

I've never broken a bass string either. Guitar strings are a different story.
Title: Re: Cheap Bass Strings
Post by: Freuds_Cat on April 29, 2009, 02:24:38 PM
I used to break either an A or an E about once a month for ages after I bought the Jazz before finally learning that the guy who had filed the grooves in the Badass saddles had made them too sharp. Had them modded and haven't broken a string in more than 20 years.
Title: Re: Cheap Bass Strings
Post by: Highlander on April 29, 2009, 03:04:56 PM
I led a dubious life playing mostly in three piece with vocals, playing a lot of chords to fill in during solos (the Hiwatt is handy for that as she has a built in volume switching circuit) and tended to be a bit rough so they tended to deteriorate quite quickly... that and the Tequilabird had a Badass bridge and pointy saddles...

My last band in the 80's (now re-formed) was/is much more restrained and I mostly play with my fingers these days...

I also discovered some oddball Rotosound strings which had the core exposed to go over the saddles - exceptionally bright but highly fragile - don't use them now although the Hohner still has three... as I said, I don't change them unnecessarily... though nothing as old as Pilgrim Al's ...  ;D
Title: Re: Cheap Bass Strings
Post by: Pilgrim on April 29, 2009, 08:22:39 PM
I checked the bass with the GHS strings (as far as I can recall). The silks are a dark purple and the windings on the old flats on that P-bass are closer to blue.  I don't think they have been exposed to enough light to fade to blue, so either GHS changed colors or it's some other brand on the P-bass.
Title: Re: Cheap Bass Strings
Post by: Dave W on April 29, 2009, 09:11:18 PM
If it's any help, all sizes of LaBella flats had royal blue silks back then.
