Gibson Basses / Re: Epiphone Blackbird reclamation project on the 'Bay

It fits and even looks better because the insignia is under the plastic as opposed to crudely applied on the plastic of the original.

If you do get it, why not keep the body and a new neck for it? Someday something cheap will crop up (doesn't Mark still have a neck of an Epi TB from his Fenderbird project?). I think getting the Epi back in shape will make a useful comparison to your Gibbie Blackbird, it does have a sound of its own, rougher and bassier, not as clean and lean as the Gibson one, more like a Grabber with additional ooomph.

Uwe

Uwe......thank you for checking on the 'guard for me.....I have certainly consiedered keeping the body....I'm NOT a very handy chap though when it comes to projects involving wood and measuring!!!  I would ask him to ship without the neck...would a regular Epi-bird neck, or perhaps one from a Jazz bass fit right in?

Gibson Basses / Epiphone Blackbird reclamation project on the 'Bay
« on: November 15, 2008, 06:58:20 AM »
All,

There 's an Epi Blackbird on the bay, that had it's headstock snapped off, and being sold as parts.  As many know, I've been searching for a BB pickguard for some time....IF I win this auction, would anyone be interested in buying the body for a F****bird???

Right now, with the CDN Exchange. it'll be about 200...so not very cost-effective for a piece of plastic.  That' all I'd want, maybe the Optigrab too if that wasn't desired....b/c I think I would actually use it! I'll ask them to ship without the neck too...since I'm not the project type..

Also a question for UWE:  Does the Epi BB pickguard line up with the one on a Gibby Bird?

LMK!

Thanks

Scott

« on: November 12, 2008, 08:12:05 AM »
All,

Might be in the market for a used Firebird Studio, aside from Ebay, if anyone has one to move, I may be interested.  There's a red one on the 'Bay at 650 I'm considering..

Apologies in advance if this post is in the wrong place...

Regards,
Scott

Clubbass is in Toronto, and Dave Freeman, the owner, is great...assuming this is of interest.

So I had my Thunderbird set up with TI Jazz Rounds (real thin gauge) for B-E-A-D tuning and it is amazing!

I don't think I could pull it off at a jazz or country gig, but the church gig and its new Christian rock stuff its great!  Using a pick too, and I"m having a blast.  Most of the church stuff is just like being in a U2 Tribute band anyway, so this tuning seems to work on the fly.

At this point, the TBird seems like it was always made for the B string.  I'm not having floppy issues, guage is thin enough so it sits in the nut.  Maybe I'm at the end of the GAS road finally!

 ;)

Which strings are they???  My bandmates miss the range my SR5 had, and this might be just the thing...especially since I like to be down a whole step, then drop the now D to a C...

Everyone -

Thanks for all of the kind wishes and words - for me and my wife!!!  She was so excited!

Someone was wondering what the bass in the middle is - that's a Peavey Randy Jackson RJIV....I've had that new since 1990.

More pics of it:

Well....................my wife totally shocked me this year.......she bought this from a link I sent back in December 07...........been sitting on it since

Quick thoughts:

1) Setup very low..but just uber-right
2) Uber-funky bass....great for thumb/pop stuff...
3) Thunderbird-Lite or Diet-Thunderbird or Thunderbird "sans calories"
4) Dark blue to light blue finish sharper in person
5) Fits in the back of my civic :)
6) 'McLovin' the chrome on this one.

I have Black Beauties on mine too - first time I tried them.

Might try the Hi-Beams as Mark suggests next time...

This post is a complete tease for me, Uwe.

Perhaps send them my way for a second opinion

I swear I'll send them back

Uwe's edit: Yup, just like you didn't take any land from the Native Americans!

".....I HAVE NO IDEA WHO MADE IT.....BUT THEY DID A GREAT JOB..."

For personal safety reasons, his identity should remain undisclosed I think.

I actually know the luthier......it was his first one...

"I think its a healthy thing that discussion has moved from anal sex to pinkies here."

:-\   The former is far more interesting than the latter, trust me!

Does Opti-Grab have another meaning????

I think its to cover his "expenses"!  I use the optigrab to route the cord thru........and my pinkie floats above the bridge/strings, actually makes for a nice callous on its outside edge at the first joint. I think a black bridge cover would be an interesting addition........

A $3300 signature.......sheesh.....THANKS GIBSON......Gibson REALLY likes to neglect it's 4 string sons.........would a dog be as loyal?

I'm still not quite sure whether he just rests his pinkie on the optigrab or actually even inserts it, thus "hooking up" with the TBird. I find that doable, but uncomfortable. In the recent Saints of Los Angeles vid where he incidentally plays his new signature model it appears to me he's indeed hooking up. But we need expert evidence: Herr Carlston come forth and enlighten us!!!

Uwe

Being mostly a pick player now, I found myself using the Optigrab principle without the actual part on my Tbird:  I hook my pinky finger under the d or g string while picking....and it's always  over the bridge pickup.

"Of course the "real" Opti-grab was invented by Navin Johnson."

If I may quote Mr Johnson......."The new phone books are here! The new phone books are here!

I had to order it, Seattle has no Gibson dealer that I'd willingly leave money with, its probably about 60 days out so when it shows up it'll be a nice surprise. Uwe probably got a better price than me, ($2200.00) as he's done so much business with his local dealer. It is my intent to play it out, as I do all my basses......my "collection" has to work too.  ;)

Cool....Actually, that's the same price as I saw and converted from some Japanese dealers......but 2200 is a bit rich for a guy who can't seem to get gigging again (me).....it would be sweet though!

Are these special order only?

What is the US pricing for these???

Congrats Mark!  Is it something you would use live?
