New Van Halen album
« on: February 07, 2012, 09:05:30 AM »
What I've heard so far on YouTube kicks serious ass!
I didn't see that coming, after the somewhat disappointing first single Tattoo (that was only a remake of an old reject song)

And Wolfgang appears to be a much better bass player than Michael Anthony!

I've been kind of excited about this! I haven't really kept up with VH since the 80s, but I'm going to see them April 1, and buying this record....

Yeah, Wolfie sounds great & the rhythm section is really tight.

That Tattoo song reminds me of a bad version or Mean Street.  :puke:  Glad to hear that wasn't the best they had to offer on the new disc.

Most of the album is made up of old riffs and songs from before they were signed, but so were most of the original songs on all of the early albums. Tattoo seems to be the worst of the bunch and some of them are downright awesome.

If you were never a Van Halen fan these probably won't do much for you, but if you liked Fair Warning you're probably liking this new album a lot.

 I haven't listened yet.......

But I really like the Louis Dreyfuss New York Central 20th Century Limited steamlined 4-6-4 on the cover!

That old riff too?

I've got the CD on order. Out of sheer interest. Doubtful whether it will be as good as the new Chickenfoot, but I'm curious.

Better than Chickenfoot.
Eddie rips Satriani to pieces on this one.
And Wolfie can actually play bass.

You'd expect no less with the genes of his old man.

Of course, the comparison is inherently flawed, the new Chickenfoot album is not so much flashy (the 1st one was in places) as rootsy. More Stones than Van Halen.

Anyway, it will be a joy to hear Eddie again. For all the fretboard shenanigans he rightfully gets credit for, he's a fantastic and creative rhythm guitarist. People tend to overlook that. Steve Morse is an exceptionally talented rhythm player too. His solos sometimes get samey (his choice of scales), but I never tire of his wonderfully chugging rhythm guitar.

You're right, Uwe. People also forget Ed was a drummer before he was a guitarist, and he was a gifted pianist first of all. He knows rhythm and composition.

Just ask him, he'll tell you.

Especially if he's had a few. He'll tell you over and over!

That sounds like it is true then that Ritchie Blackmore would try to avoid speaking with EvH at all cost, not because he did not rate him as a guitarist, but because all Eddie ever wanted to do was discuss guitars and amps, something that bores Herr Blackmore shitless.
