Title: Underrated Beatles Songs
Post by: westen44 on November 05, 2020, 06:42:59 AM
These are some pretty good choices.  Some of these songs are quite a bit better than other Beatles songs which were much more popular.

It's an embarrassment of riches.

My favorite underrated Beatles song was never on an album (until the anthologies).

"I'm Down" has always been one of my favorite Beatles songs.  I like it, for example,, more than "Helter Skelter," another Beatles song in a similar vein but more popular.

I wouldn't know where to start, honestly.

I can name an overrated one, albeit only IMHO & taste: Yesterday. I'm friggin' serious. I never liked that even as a child. It's twee and overwrought.

Rubber Soul and Revolver are way underrated.  Sgt. Pepper is way overrated.  I think I've mentioned this before in other threads.  But I haven't changed my position.  In fact, I don't even much listen to the Beatles anymore anyway.

+ 1 and then some

Agreed. Revolver is my favourite album of all times but I'm a huge Beatles fan to begin with.

McCartney was at the top of his game as a songwriter on Help/Rubber Soul/Revolver IMO.

I think they reached a peak with Revolver.  George Harrison said he considered Rubber Soul and Revolver to be two parts of the same album.  I don't quite understand why he said that, but I don't have the perspective of being an insider, either.

If an alien asked me what rock/pop was about, I'd play Sgt. Pepper to him. To me, that album is immaculate conception and execution.

Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, She's Leaving Home, When I'm Sixty-Four, and Good Morning Good Morning are all lackluster compared to many, many other Beatles songs, IMO.  On the other hand, I love the bass on the Sgt. Pepper album.  It caused me to learn bass.  Paul McCartney also said his bass playing was the best on that album.

I love all three, especially the laconic "For the Benefit of Mr Kite", Lennon's sarcasm and wit at its best.

The bass on that album is 2die4.
