First couple zep albums sounded o-k to me--maybe even the first 4 albums---after that, the bass started to sound very mid-ranged out...

Listening to an Emmylou Harris greatest hits collection.  Check out Emory Gordy Jr's playing.  Perfect time...clean punchy sound.

He also did a lot of the cool 70's Elvis stuff.

Classic lines, clean playing.

FWIW

Scott Lafaro

Haven't seen the article...guess I need to go buy a copy (one of my favorites).

Can't imagine leveling those frets when they get a little notched.

Fender Basses / Re: Squier Telebass

Modern country music is precisely what is driving this.  Do you find yourself reaching for the low strung instrument a lot, or is this going to be just a one or two song a night kind of thing. i.e. is it a gimmick, or is it something I'm likely to use for a whole set?

I used to take a round piece of paper from a hole punch, and (using cellophane tape) tape it to the side of the neck to use for a fifth fret marker, even in conservatory...

It worked for me, but then again I guess that's why I'm a CPA and not in an orchestra.

I do remember my arco sound being pretty awful...this is one tough instrument to make "sing"

I always liked the weird looks that the Englehardt (looked like it belonged in Elvis' band) would get from the sophisticated "artsy" music school types...I didn't care--I had a steady gig playing rock n roll for a living, and could pay for my own damn music school.

Used to play one 30 years ago---it's the one part of my former life that I still haven't been able to "get back"...a garishly beautiful natural color plywood Englehardt---

I love the crossover stuff Edgar Meyer does...I have heard about the dots before, and I believe it...no one plays as beautifully as he does in the upper register of the instrument...he sounds perfectly in tune and violin-like in a register of the instrument where you need massive physical strength just to play the notes let alone have 'em sound good.

Check out the stuff he does with Bela Fleck.

Fender Basses / Squier Telebass

Well...not finding any 5 string basses that are even remotely "me" (old school)

Thinking of maybe stringing a Squier Tele BEAD (always wanted a Tele in the 70's)...

Would a typical "B" string go through the body without modification?

Is the quality of these things up to gigging? (remember my main basses are Danos)

Check out Chris Brubeck's sound with one of those and tapewound strings---one of my favorite bass sounds...

Well..

this weekend I re-strung everything I gig with..

Tapes for the Pace

Flats for one Dano

Pressurewounds for the other

All GHS--haven't used any of their products  in lots of years...though I don't know why because these were all reasonably priced, well made, well silked, and all sound good.

I retired and sold everything a while back.  Just started playing again 7 or 8 years ago.

The local library was a huge asset in getting stuff back.  I burn stuff down to disk on my computer.  Without this asset, I never could have got back up to speed playing bass again. Never.

the fenders are definitely a different vibe.

The Fenders Mwah...these don't, but the GHS's certainly subwoof and sound very uprightish.
