Look at the quick release bridge cover on this Shergold Marathon. I think I should modify a P bass cover (w/ foam mute) like that.

Clever and an easy mod.

If you're one that can use it, it's a nice idea.

I prefer the sound of over-string foam mute, playing with a pick it's different from under-string mute. For some reason only over-string keeps the click. With fingerstyle there's not a lot of difference. So I have one P with the cover and fixed mute, and one without. All lever-engaged mutes are under-string. This is the first time I see an over-string mute that can be removed in a second. Worth a try, I think.

Handy for sure. It's either that or get a Gibson 2 point with switchable mutes in there ;P

That's an under-string contraption.

I still have the original foam mute from my '63 P. Its the over-string, with adhesive holding it to the underside of the cover. I think it wouldn't interfere with that idea to make the cover removable. The strings press grooves into the foam after a while.

IMHO the original foam is great, gives that clicky sound we immediately recognize. The closest are weather strip, and what Fender sells as "pickup height foam strips".

Yup, 3M weatherstrip is the best match.
