Gibson Basses / Re: Jimmy Bain's Thunderbird

Cool band! Never heard of that lineup.

Yes, it was only during the late '82 I believe. Lynott, Rimson, Darren Wharton, Gus Isadore, Jimmy Bain & Mark Nauseef.

Here's little Jimmy playing keys with Philip and his Soul Band. Jimmy looks like Macca or Kasim with that moptop.:)

Jerome Rimson slaps on a strange looking Ric copy.

Was it Bain or Bob Daisley on that record?

Bain. It was compiled from the 1976 tour.

And all the other Norman Watt-Roy's genius-like lines.

John Greaves on bass IIRC. Him or Bill McCormick... or was it Hugh Hopper? Richard Sinclair it wasn't, he was only on "Rock Bottom". Anyway, a chance to mention 4 great English bass players.:)

he was a while with Ian Hunter's Overnight Angels before the Wild Horses.

He was also in John Cale's band and played on the great EP "Animal Justice". "Hedda Gabler" is a classic song.

The only basses I have seen him using in Rainbow were the natural Telecaster with a bridge pickup ( and with or without the monstrous pickguard) and a blond (or natural) Precision with a maple neck.

Jimmy played also with Phil Lynott in 1982 on Phil's solo band tour. With Jerome Rimson on bass, the band had three bass players! Jimmy was on keyboards 'though...

That must be the onelisted on the Rainbow OnStage album as a "reverb Firebird" bass guitar...

Yes indeed. I always wondered what the heck was that and thought maybe they still listed Gruber's bass which of course was a non-reverse Thunderbird.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Re: STRATOBASTER BASS
« on: August 19, 2010, 01:52:40 AM »
Neil Murray had a custom Strat bass made in the late 70's. He had a fretless Precision neck which he had fretted and bolted into a strat style body. A 32" scale bass, looked liked a big Stratocaster. He has pics of it on his facebook page.

Here's my new rig...until I get my Hiwatt 4x12 this week.

Almost like my other combination 'though I have 100 watts less, a newer SVT 8x10" and a different style body on my long scale 12-string Hamer neck.:)

R.I.P. Richie. A fabulous drummer. "Tripe Face Boogie" from "Waiting For Columbus" is one of my favourite Hayward moments.

Uwe mentioned Plant and Richie played in his band too. "Shaken 'n' Stirred" (1985) and already on 1984 leg of the "Pictures At Eleven & Principle Of Moments" tour handling all those Phil Collins licks with ease (Cozy & Barrie too) and adding his own personality.

Did John use Hiwatt in 1974? With The Who it was all Coliseum Bass, Coliseum Lead and 880 at that time. Maybe it was used with his band The Ox.

Isn't it the same like Townshend's CP103? With four inputs and four volumes and no middle.

Here's a couple of pics that a customer of mine sent me.
He had his BaCHbird converted into a MotorpsychoBird

With two DarkStars.
Custom pickguard that I had made for him
New pots
Pickup selector switch
new topnut
Hipshot UltraLite tuners
New jack input
Refinned with Nitro

He must be a Bent Saether & Motorpsycho fan? A great band, great bassist and that 'bird looks great!

Gibson Basses / Re: Chris Squire's Thunderbird

I saw Yes only once, in 1983 on the 90125 tour. Great show. Was Squire back to playing his Ric on that tour? I did briefly meet Alan White after the show and he signed my tour book.  :)

He used plenty of basses, depending on the song just like in the 70's. He had the green Mouradian ("Owner Of The Lonely Heart"), the Elektra ("Leave It", "Cinema", "City Of Love"), the 8-string Ranney ("Changes", "Hearts"), Thunderbird (for "Gimme Some Lovin'" and probably for "Our Song") and the Ric ("Hold On", "It Can Happen" plus all the classic old stuff).
