The example for Les Claypool is Primus' fifth-rate version of Making Plans For Nigel, while Colin Moulding (who also wrote it) gets no mention. Nice.

OTOH at least they're all respected bassists.

I was amazed that Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten weren't on the list but then I read through the list and couldn't work out who to drop in their place.

....stupid lists.....!

According to Gibson at least:

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/top-bassists-0328-2011/#

I don't have an issue with any (being in a mild mood today, that includes even JPJ!  :-* ) of the gentlemen named (or twenty others they could have named instead), but trust Gibson to forget on their own corporate site an - actually the most - iconic Gibson bass player like Jack Bruce.   :-\ :-\ :-\ :rimshot: I re-scrolled again and again a couple of times not believing they would shoot a turkey like that. Gibson has people working on this site who (1) don't know who Jack Bruce is and (2) don't know that he played an EB-3 all through the late sixties and early seventies and an EB-1 again in the last ten years. Because they don't know what EB-3s and EB-1s are either. A-m-a-z-i-ng. They must breed them somewhere.

I am 100% sure had Fender done something similar, they would have listed Jack Bruce and tipped their hats with a comment like "although never really a Fender player except in the early days of Cream when he played the odd duck of the Fender VI ...".

Gibson is so oblivious of its bass playing legacy it sometimes even still hurts after decades of ignorance.

I knew all was lost when people complained that they didn't know know who Jack Bruce was when he was on the cover of Bass Player magazine ten years ago.

I swear these people are retarded.

Quote
Flea originally relied on traditional basslines before beginning to incorporate a Bootsy Collins-inspired slap bass style into hit album Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

I'm not a huge RHCP fan, but please... The album they reference came out around 1991 or 2.

From 1984:

Yeah, no slapping there...

The list is upside down. JPJ is Number One!  8)
I also agree that Jack Bruce should be on the list--in the 2 spot & bump Claypool off.

Jack Bruce is indeed a glaring omission from that list.  I'm cool with the rest of the list generally, although I don't rate Flea or Claypool either.

I think trying to work out weather Tony Levin is a better bass player than Claypool is a completely pointless exercise. Like arguing over weather peas are better than beans or similar.

Using a pick and only the neck pickup, Squire developed his signature aggressive sound by incorporating guitar effects like tremolo, phasing and the wah-wah pedal into his bass technique.

Only the neck pickup? Where did they get this info? Oh, from the internet of course...

What? Wow! Talk about a complete lack of doing any research before writing....

Ugh... more stupidity. More like "using a pick and sending each pickup of a Rickenbacker bass to a different rig, including a Marshall stack..."

The fact that Jack Bruce is my favorite bassist makes the omission all that more glaring to me.  The list isn't really too bad, but the fact that Bruce was left out completely is inexcusable.

It's like Höfner forgetting about Macca or Fender not mentioning Jimi Hendrix. A howler.

I can think of reasons why Jack Bruce might not be in a list compiled by Gibson, such as his defection to Warwick. Or maybe they thought people would call bias. They should have made it the 10 best Gibson-playing bassists of all time, at least there would have been less room for argument.  :P :-\ :o :-X

That's a nice BP feature; I don't know if they still have it since it has been years since I subscribed to BP.  It used to be a really good magazine, though.

People may have called bias if he weren't qualified. That's not the case with Jack, and these lists always reflect biases.

Gibson probably doesn't even realize Jack has played an EB-1 for years now. They're clueless.

Days like this it's a real pleasure to hang out in these enviroments!

He plays that EB-1 even though it is fretted and he loves his fretless Warwick. Call that devotion. Any brand worth its salt would have built him a signature EB-1 for the Cream reunion, just think how much effort Warwick puts in to please the man, they have just built a perfect replica of his Thumb bass for him - at almos 50.000 bucks a piece (it's made from the last pieces of old rosewood they could legally find and use, it's a limited run of three using up all that wood, one for Jack, one for the Warwick museum and one for an American collector willing to pay that much).

In contrast, "clueless" for Gibson is just right as a description.

Nofi!  >:( Down!!!

The Doobie guy played Gibsons a lot: EBs, TBirds, G-3s ...

Marin Turner of Wishbone Ash is missing. Almost always TBird (or his mock-Gibson Explorer with TB pups from Hamer when they were still a small company).

Love the way he sings and plays melody at the same time here:
