This reminds me of a very similar discussion on the Wishbass forum.

A nice JG 4080, no BIN and no reserve, started at $1.

Is that an extra-long tug bar or am I imagining things?

Well, since you mentioned The Who. Here is an early video I just became aware of. The Who (then still called The High Numbers) live in 1964 at the Railway Hotel. Entwistle is playing his Ric.

Rickenbacker Basses / No rest for modded 4004's

That stealth JG Laredo converted to 5-string is on eBay again. Not the first time. It looks great but seems like no one wants to keep it. Reminds me of another JG Laredo modded with Darkstar pickups, that also looked amazing but changed hands every few months. Why is it?

Just got the book. Had a quick look, I absolutely love it. The attention to every detail, the well-written text, the elegant design, of course the photos.

I'm looking forward to reading through it cover to cover, slowly, enjoying every word and every pic.

Every Ric bass player should own a copy. It's a must-have.

It's also the perfect gift for Fender bass players  ;)

Instant classic, Paul. My hat's off to you.

But I'm anxious to read REAL reviews from the bass mags
They don't matter. They don't know about Ric basses more than you do. You have given this community a long-awaited and much-needed reference book. If you are content with your book, that's all that matters, really.

Gibson Basses / Re: Does anyone here care about 5 strings?
« on: June 27, 2013, 11:58:39 AM »
....but I ABSOLUTELY HATE a 5-string bass strung with a hi C. It's called a BASS. Because you play LOW notes, not high notes.
Think of it as a lazy person's bass. Instead of going up the neck, you stay in 1st position. Useful when reading sheet music when you can't look at the neck.

Awesome. Vintage car collectors must be freaking out over this.

An upright and an electric because I need both. Having a station wagon helps.

Unless the player is a Entwistle /Sir Paul level player I don't think celebrity adds much value
Entwistle would agree with you. In his May '82 Guitar Player interview (famous Gretsch 6120 cover issue) he said: "I wouldn't expect people to pay me more money for my instruments just because I played them."

As for McCartney, he owns Bill Black's upright that he played with Elvis. So even Sir Paul wants to own his idol's bass, and I bet Linda (who bought him that bass) paid more than the going price for a modded Kay M1.

The sellers's handle, "prato fiorito con margherite", is Italian for "Sniffing glue in a flowery meadow with the seller of the sturgeon bass signed by Les Claypool".

It reminds me of the electric mandolin.
