Liquid Tension LIVE~ Tony Levin & Co.
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:46:37 AM »
LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT
Mike Portnoy - John Petrucci - Jordan Rudess - Tony Levin
10th ANNIVERSARY REUNION TOUR

In 1998 and 1999, Liquid Tension Experiment released two instrumental albums that set the prog world on fire. The project featured Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy & John Petrucci on drums & guitar (respectively), virtuoso keyboardist Jordan Rudess and bass legend Tony Levin.

After the success of the two albums and the project's undeniable chemistry, Rudess was asked to join Dream Theater full-time and the project was put on the shelf for an indefinite hiatis....
until now!

Back together for a select number of US dates, the quartet is reuniting to revisit the magical music they created 10 years ago and tap back into their chemistry for a whole new musical experiment!

I find Dream Theater (and the affiliated solo projects) boring. I have a softer spot for prog rock than most people here, but Petrucci knows one solo only in two speeds: very fast and even faster. Makes Yngwie sound like an old blind tasteful bluesman. Their singer is plain out of his league trying to sing over their unsympathetically arranged stuff. The bass player is athletic, but harmonically and melodically limited. He never ever plays anything that is off the wall, light-hearted or surprising - if he's so fond of playing 16ths, he should buy a couple of Tower of Power albums for some inspiration how to do that with a smirk and a couple of more notes than just the root note.

I can't say anything nasty about the drummer and the keyboarder is the only guy in the band with some humor in his playing.

They make Rush sound like they were the Beatles.

Yikes!  You should write reviews.  Never got into Dream Theater too much, but also haven't gone out of my way to listen to them.  You're not alone in the soft spot for prog music.  I've got most of the King Crimson releases, and you can add a handful of the Collector's Club series, along with Deception of the Thrush, and a decent boot on vinyl (it was later remastered as The Night Watch).
Yngwie a blind, tasteful bluesman?  That's a funny line.  I'll have to remember that one.  It's almost as good as a local reviewer who slammed RHCP up and down - citing their funk influence as having completely disappeared, and made the statement that they probably never even listened to Parliament.

Hey, R&B, ever listen to Bozzio, Levin and Stevens?  I like that stuff a lot.  Steve Stevens plays a pretty cool flamenco guitar across the prog instrumental platform.  I really dig "The Dark Road" off of Black Light Syndrome.

Yeah!!! I have BLS by BLS. ;)

My fav track of theirs is on Situation Dangerous. It's sorta Flamenco too, it's called Tziganne.

Tony Levin ROOOOLS!

Edit: Just put on Black Light Syndrome. First track is The Sun Road.
Is that the track you mean, gweimer? I dig that toon!
Second track is Dark Corners. That one is more than a little harsh on my ears.
Maybe you like 'em both together?? lol The Dark Road. haha
Track 3, Duende~ is the most Flamenco track on this cd. Luvvit!
Glad you reminded me of this disc. I've had Situation Dangerous for years & know it well, but just got BLS recently & haven't heard it all that much.
Good to get more familiar with it.

Yeah, I'm getting dyslexic in my old age.  It's "The Sun Road" that I'm talking about.

LT is far more inspirational than Dream Theater, which I as well find boring, and I love experiment/prog music.

I still favor Porcupine Tree as my favorite of the last run of Prog acts (which more have come along, including Mew & Radiohead, which I do not consider prog)

I just got tired of "chops only" music. I just feel that it's all been covered, nothing new. Only Jeff Beck still gets me excited about guitar virtuoso types as he has mellowed in his elderly years and refined his playing to an almost sonic orgasmic experience rather than mindless aerobics on guitar which I find tedious at best. David Gilmour is in Beck's boat as well. They might not be the fastest or flashiest, but to me will be hands down better than a lot of shredders.

Nothing more boring than noodley solo bassists as well. Shredders & fret board aerobic performers are a dime a dozen on MySpace or even any Guitar Center, where it seems like today kids just want to play as fast as they can or go thwackety thwackety on bass.

Dont get me wrong, but there is still interesting new music being made. Superfloor & Boilersuit are two bands I find refreshing, just playing good music with conviction, unlike the last Steve Via tour where it was basically him playing as fast as he could over simplistic droning beats, without any reguards to "a song composition".
