Coming soon from Gibson
« on: November 29, 2013, 08:35:08 PM »
Guitar content, not bass, but this should be of interest: Les Paul Recording II with low-Z pickups.  :o

Discussion at Gibson's forum: http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/107604-les-paul-recording-ii-coming-soon/

I wonder if there's even a remote chance of a bass version.

I wonder if there's even a remote chance of a bass version.

If they only make 600 guitars, there is no reason why they should not make a couple of hundred bass versions as well.
Let´s just hope they put some nice finish on them too!

Who would have ever thunk it!! Lester's passing must have stirred a new appreciation for these guitars. I never thought they would reissue these! I wonder what the pickups will look like or who will make them...................

The only one I have ever found online that comes close to the specs (and looks) is Ballurio.

Interesting.

... though the use of "II" does not bode well from my perspective (seeing as what they've done with the G Series sequels - those may indeed have had room for improvement, but the LoZ series was near-perfect in my opinion and I really am not looking forward to any significant redesigns, especially as regards the decade/varitone and/or coil taps, passive treble & bass tone knobs, and the pups themselves - stacked humbuckers with blade polepeiies).

..... then again, since this is waaaay out of my price range, the thing I am looking forward to most is clarification on the circuit (i.e. pot taper). I don't expect that too many parts (pups, the master switch, which is a little hard to find, the "bass" knob) to come up on ebay due to the short run.

........and did somebody say white?  I don't get to gloat often:

As she came to me (paid CAN$800) - hard to tell but one tuner was busted and the control plate was cracked and badly repaired at the jack, strap buttons removed and replaced with 2" screws holding those stap clips on (so solid and reliable, that I never bothered to fix that)... in addition to then yellowing/cigarette tar (she was a working girl from Montreal):

How I fixed her up:

Some much nicer specimens (starting with one that went for US4k the very week after I got mine - needless to say I felt like a bandit):

that price was amazing considering things like:

A slightly mintier one (none ever sold for quite as much as the above one ever again as far as I know)... or at least less yellowed:

Truly interesting. Gibson had an article out about Les and his Recordings just a few weeks ago:

To grant it to Gibson, due to the Les Paul affiliation/idoltry, there is a way better chance of these being sold to guitarists than to bassists. I'm not aware of any name-bassist (Rob and Jake excepted of course, but they only started once they had been out of production for twenty years or so!) who played the Triumph basses (either version) for any relevant period of time continuously in the seventies though people like Suzi Q were of course seen with one (or the original bassist of Oasis). In contrast, Les Paul and his guitar became one in the last few decades of his life.

Tina Weymouth and the dudes from Blondie, U2 and Blur as a start.  Adam Clayton especially is a big current user (didn't someone post a link to an interview/his blog or something recently where he was singing it's praises? ... ah here we go: http://u2-stage-and-studio.com/adam/id18.html), though he's mostly irrelevant now (and also switches up a lot - his roster also includes an RD, Rivoli, multiple TBirds, LP Sig, numerous Ps and even a Warwick sig model which looks like exactly the sort of blingy overstated waste of wood that you'd expect as a sig model for a super-successful earlier in life but now middle-aged bassist whose frontman begrudgingly admits to missing out on the (post-)punk thing... actually more so).

I get what you're saying but they do have a huge cult following besides Rob and Myself (evidence includes steady upward price trajectory, especially for the pups, on ebay).  Add in the general appeal of the regular Les Paul (6 banger or 4, take yer pick - you gotta know that the popularity of the 6 banger really helped the sales of the HiZ 4 bangers, which now enjoy a solid rep of their own) and there's enough potential interest to make a business case.

That all said I agree it's not bloody likely (which I forgot to mention earlier, in my excitement to post gear porn). ... but that's never stopped us from discussing our hopes and dreams before; hell, maybe the Gibson R&D team lurks the boards, your sig seems to hope so too.  Gibson has learned to be cautious and test the waters for new models lately.

Well, I love my Triumph and play it regularly.  Its one annoying flaw, in my eyes, is its weight.  Otherwise, it's a great bass and I'd love another, knowing of course, any Gibson reissue would be very little like the original!   :P

I played my new OSB Les Paul out last Wednesday night, and it got lot's of compliments on how it sounded.  However,  both musicians and non-musicians asked me "Why are you playing a Les Paul?  Aren't you the bass player? "   The worst comment I got  was "Wow - I really love your new Slash guitar!"      I would have rather heard  "Hey, that's the Meshell The Neglected Cello bass!"

I get compliments on mine all the time.  About half from other bass players, and not any  groaners like you got. ... obviously this is part of the LoZ charm and therefore they should reissue it.

Played my two tone burst over flame top Epi LP last night. I didn't really care if the girl I was making out with at the after party thought I was playing a guitar.  8)
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.
