Frank Zappa beer?!!!
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:40:14 PM »
Well, OK, maybe that's a misnomer, more like "beer commemorating Frank Zappa":

Lagunitas Brewing Co. is releasing 22 oz. bottles commemorating the 40th anniversaries of Frank Zappa's albums.

When the "Lumpy Gravy" one came out, I decided to get more creative with my commemorative pictures of these commemorative bottles.

Before:

After:

Keep an eye out - "We're Only In It For The Money" is due in April!

Cool - that combines two things I like a lot (well... three, if you include John's post!)

I'll have to look for that.  I'm excited because a new grocery store (AJ's) just popped up down the street, and they have a large enough beer section to warrant having a "Beer Steward".   ;D

My kinda joint!

I found mine at Safeway (a local chain) so hopefully they're distributing it pretty widely.

I agree, Zappa can be offensive, in the early years he seemed more conscientious and political, things got more and more juvenile and sexist as time went on. I tend to just listen to the instrumental stuff! But the first album that turned me on (so to speak) was Fillmore East...

I don't think the beer itself is any different, just the label.

Plus, it was fun to pull out my vinyl copy of Lumpy Gravy! There's an instrumental version of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" on there, even though the song titles aren't listed.

Funny but things have gotton so raunchy that most of Zappa's raunch is more like Weird Al, compared to shows like Family Guy & South Park- Except Zappa's White Album with Flo & Eddie.

This is the era of Zappa/Mothers work that I tend to gravitate to:

He was a hugely underrated guitarist - one of my favorites.

That BBC interview is cool.  There was some other interview that had Napoleon Brock talking about his audition, and Bruce Fowler expounding on how getting fired was a routine occurrence for him (I think he was joking).  Wish I could find it again.

Ruth, and the rest of that lineup was/is just incredibly talented.

OK guys, I've gotta get back to work so stop posting cool links!  ;)

Here's one that I hadn't seen before, though I've seen other bits of the show:

Some nice phasered violin from Jean Luc Ponty. It's over 8 minutes long and the sound quality is really good.

I haven't watched the other parts yet, but here are the links just in case:

Funny that this thread should turn up.  I was out of town over the week-end, and the restaurant we went to had Lumpy Gravy on tap.  It was really pretty good.

Thinking about it, without Zappa's raunchy humor, he would have never had the commercial success he had, including top 40 airplay (at least in Cleveland) or the huge fan base, which if you ever went to a Zappa concert, was 60% stoned, really strange people and 40% musicians including women.

Les Claypool I think does the same, having nonsense twisted food & under belly lyrics gives him a broader audience than going to a Billy Sheehan concert who is made of of bass players. Primus concerts are the same crowd as Zappa's.
