Some Friday Afternoon Stoner Rock (With EB-2 Content)
« on: June 20, 2008, 11:41:33 AM »
I can get into Sabbath and newer bands like Om, Fu Manchu, Sasquatch - but I somehow missed out on Spirit Caravan...

...and there was Gibson bass content!

Love that doomsday cloud cast by Dave Shermann's EB-2.  No substitute for that mud!

Thanks! That's good stuff. They seem to have captured the sound and spirit of Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality and Vol 4.

Sleep does a nice job at that too.  Check this out:

Great thread! I want to start a stoner rock band in the worst way right now. I'm playing lighter / more mellow, acoustic backing stuff right now and a part of me wants to detune and fuzz out!

I submit a Gibson-o-fied clip:

Boris performing "Statement." Takeshi playing a knockoff Gibson EB-0/SG doubleneck (he tours exclusively with a Steinberger guitar/bass doubleneck these days) and Wata with her Les Paul.

my two  musical loves are the blues and slow, sludgy rock. stuff by ocean fills that niche nicely as well as some bands mentioned above. to quote a phrase from an old killdozer ad, " slower, louder "!

I like that some blues-rock, grunge, and this type of stuff can give you that huge adrenaline rush without a chops-fest being involved.  Instead, its all done more effectively thru conviction and passion - IMO.  I think overall, I've come to appreciate music more holistically, rather than fixate on individual virtuoso talent like I tended to do when I was a yonger player.

Playing in a band like that is what really cured me.  Imagine - guitar players and drummers that refused to solo! :)  I still like solos when they are thoughtful, and I still get into bands of virtuosos who come together to create something good as a whole (Return to Forever, for example), but people sometimes forget that simple can get the job done too!

I get a kick out of this L7 clip where the gratuitous rock guitar solo was done by the toy guitar  ;D

...good Tbird action in there too!

You're not classifying L7 as stoner rock, are you?  :o  I think they would object.

Very little of my (large) music collection has true guitar solos. Great guitar licks, yes. Wanker solos, no.

It's friday!

High on Fire (featuring Matt Pike, formerly of Sleep) playing the title track of their new album. They're both playing with custom First Act guitars, but I know for a fact they recorded the album with a Les Paul and Thunderbird respectively.

Pike's custom First Act is pretty sweet. Definitely a forward-thinking Les Paul design. It's 9 string: EADGGBBEE

And Jeff Matz's bass is just an RD clone. Why isn't Gibson making these!?

Kinda resembles the "Johnny A", minus a few strings
