This took awhile to finish up, esp. compared to Joe's fine work but here's my BaCHbird as a little photo essay. It actually was a fairly simple project, I'm pretty happy with the results.
Of course the traditional "owners" shot
(http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd306/veronicasteed/trains2011.jpg)
Some of the parts, new knobs and a Lull pickup in a '76 Bird case.
Here's the pickup and a wood block that I shaped to fit the cavity.
And after the pickup was installed and tested.
And some closer shots after all the parts were put back on it, the pickguard is pearliod and was cut by Paul Chandler, Mike Lull did the cutout for the pickup.

The truss rod cover is a stainless steel one I picked up on ebay, interestingly they sell for less than a plastic Gibson one....I also airbrushed the headstock with black lacquer.

And the finished bass, yes that's my bathroom  It's Winter here and the basses don't go outside for any reason so this had to do!

It goes to it's first show on the 23rd along with the Greco Thunderbird II

Great job, Fraulein! I love that these basses are being used as originally intended (a platform for each owner to complete as his personal version of the venerable NR Thunderbird). I need to get busy on mine (once I figure out if I can get one or two more with the new batch coming up)!
-
Nice work! I love bass shots in the bathroom!
-
Sweet! Especially the pearloid pick guard.
-
Very nice... 8) 8) 8)
Is it worth sending your scratchplate to Scott for a bit of "crafting" (his hot T'bird stamp), or is that gilding the lily...?

Exactamundo!

Nice!

I thought the same thing, Ken. Gilded or not, I'd do it myself. I'm just uh, particular that way.
I was going to say anal but I didn't want to start that ball rolling again!
-
Nice! But I would go with the black chrome cap knobs. 8)

Looks beautiful ! How does it sound
-
Thanks guys!
It is my intention to send the PG off to Scott in a couple weeks - it obviously needs a "stamp" to be truly complete ;)
I wish I had a '60s Bird to compare it to tonally as the Lull pup is built exactly the same as a vintage Gibson one..........To me it's growly warm with pretty even response low to high ( definately more *balls* than the Artec) and I've been playing it a lot of late to get used to it and set up a "model" on my Line 6 pedal tweaked just right. Like everyone else I marvel at the quality of this bass for it's modest cost, BaCH really did a nice job and I'm excited about the new ones coming and esp the Fenderbird
-
That looks great! Is the wire long enough to switch the aft knob with the input jack or did you have to lengthen it?

Denis I did have to rewire it, but really it was quite easy - solder, flux and a good iron plus those mad model railroader skills of mine ;)
-
Sooooo, what's your favorite railroad? I've always been fond of Great Northern myself.
-
It turned out great Mark! I really need to do something to mine.

Ahhhh. Now you'd think that I'd be an avid GN guy, Seattle being the western terminus and all, but no I'm devoutly in the Denver and Rio Grande Western camp. I model Utah in the early '70s, I custom paint and weather most of my models these are some I shot in early '09, I'm gearing up to do a bit more this Spring.

The 'Bird looks great Mark. I'm still in the process of installing reissue reverse Kluson type tuners on mine and waiting on the pickguard from Scott. I decided to keep the Artek and wire it for push/pull. I'm going to have to notch the saddles as well on mine.
Those trains look great. I'm trying to complete a 1/700 scale model of my Dads old ship USS Saratoga CV3. I hope to get it looking 1/8th as good as your trains do!
-
Nice bird and nice job detailing the trains...good photography also! I model endurance racing sports cars (static and and slot cars). In the 1980's I raced scratch-built radio control Formula I cars on outdoor simulations of the F1 circuits. I was Alan Jones/Williams Team. Have a ton of photos on film to digitize someday.
-
Mark, I would be happy to stamp your guard, I sent you a pm about what is involved.

That came out great! I love the PG material you chose. 8)

The Sara..........sister to the Lex! Coolest aircraft carriers ever!
Here's the Sara in in Puget Sound Sept. of '44 in her Pacific Fleet paint scheme.

We played on the Lexington last year, cool gig.

Serious modeling... excellent work...
My big project is a lit up AMT NCC1701D - lots of little holes to cut, and the fun of getting the power up to the nacelles... not high on the agenda at the moment though... :P

Hörnisse, how about these pics? My grandad was in the Navy around 1930 and when I was a kid gave me a nice little stack of photos of Navy vessels, including the Yorktown (pic now lost :-\), the Saratoga, Lexington, the battleships New York, Texas, West Virginia, Utah, Florida, Idaho as well as a bunch of cruisers. I also have a big photo of one of his ships, the USS Wood.

Great pics guys! (and gal ;) )
My dad joined up in September 1942 right after his 16th birthday. They have Saratoga annual reunions and the last one was in Branson, MO. They try to go to as many as they can. Dad is 83 and Mom will be 80 this March. April will be their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Sad that we didn't preserve any pre-war aircraft carriers, Enterprise and Saratoga were both surviviors of the conflict but met their end at Bikini and the torch....shame :-\
-
The Bird is a true beauty Mark!
And extra credit to you for finding a shower curtain to match your floor ;D
Love the model and ship pics as well.

It was a shame! Between 1946 and 1962 they set of around 1000 of these things. They even exploded some in the upper atmosphere! What were these guys smoking? ???

I want to see progress pics. I have an Enterprise D (I despise most of the post-Rick Berman era Starfleet ships, the "E" included) that I built about 15 years ago that been dropped and stepped on (nephews and drunk friends) and rebuilt several times that I love dearly. I just painted the inside of the clear "glowing" nacelle and deflector dish and it looks really good except where the curing of the paint caused cracks on the inside of the "red" nacelle front. I used to be a hardcore model builder of military aircraft, but my best work got destroyed (again: nephews and irresponsible grandparents). I have a 33 gallon storage tub full of rare model kits. I guess if I live to retire, I'll get around to them.
-
I still have all of the car models I built from the early 1970s up until college, when I mostly stopped building kits. I have some pretty rare ones including the Munster cars and a bunch of the old Johan kits.
Maybe we should start an "Other hobbies" thread since it sounds like lots of us do have them and it would be really interested to see what you've got.
I've started on here.

I still have my Revell models of Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein and others that I made and painted in the mid 60's.....

PBG - gonna reply to this on Denis' hobbies thread...

By the way, my favourite Railroad is Grand Funk Railroad!! I actually play bass in a cover band of Mark, Don and Mel, and Mel parts are great fun to play!
After being able to convince one of the first purchaser to sell me hid white heavy Bachbird I have just ordered few parts from greatdealz. I will send pictures as soon I complete the job, it will take some time since I am in Italy and have little time for the bass!
