Title: This returnee picks up the bass again
Post by: Basvarken on July 14, 2022, 03:04:58 PM
Right! Today I played with a full band for the first time in six(!) years.😲
After an "extended sabbatical" I get to do some filling in as bassist with my old band mates on guitars and organ! Together with new music buddies on lead vocals and drums.
I am replacing master bassist Rob van der Loo who is on tour with Epica.

The men of Purple Shade play Live In The Heart Of The City by Whitesnake live, plus some additional classics.
We were sweating like pigs in the rehearsal room. But the band was stomping and steaming like crazy!

On July 23, this returnee will return to the stage with Purple Shape. I'm excited 8)

Steal from the (once) best.

When the pale serpent still sounded like a good mix between Free and Mk III Deep Purple.

What do you like then? Have no fear, we're tolerant here.

There is hardly any music style I cannot get into.

I'm enjoying figuring out the bass lines of Neil Murray.
I've always been kind of a "meat and potatoes" bass player. So some of the songs are a bit of a challenge.
But I guess one is never too old to learn ;)

Mostly blues and roots , but the old school stuff , not the blues rock variety . West Coast swing , jump blues , Chicago style shuffles …

I'm still in a WS coverband, never thought it would last long. Truth is, if it weren't for Murrays bass lines I'd be bored to death🙂

Not harmonically the most intricate music, yes. No one would mistake them with 10cc.

Holländer, I hate to break it to you, but you're anything but a "meat & potatoes" player. I've heard you play.

Maybe not when I noodle around on the couch. But in a band situation I keep it simpler most of the time. Especially when I'm not that familiar with the repertoire.
It may surprise you Uwe, but two months ago had never heard 80% of that live album...

Haven't heard that in a while myself. Always preferred the Hammersmith side with Duck Dowle, that must have been a magic gig. The Paice performance is good, but not as good, the band sounds a little knackered on that, heavy touring was already beginning to take toll.

Neil Murray's bass playing set WS' sound apart more than anything else - including the contributions of all ex-Purple musicians. For some reason, that always went unnoticed, even by Coverdale, the fool. And Bernie Marsden was the most sympathetic co-songwriter Coverdale ever had.

Groove- and performance-wise, early Whitesnake put other DP spin-off contemporaries such as Rainbow and Gillan (the band) to shame.

But you're certainly good enough to do it, Rob. I could never play like Neil Murray, his style is very much determined by his right hand finger dexterity, you can't get that with a pick. There is a bit of Rocco Prestia going on there.

Apt analysis of the WS saga here:
