I don't think that is walnut wood, just maple or ash (?) dyed to look like it. Still nice. Not that type of wood would make an audible difference on an EB-2 of all basses whose quality of being able to provide a vastly different array of sounds has somehow escaped the annals of time.

I saw that one a few days back, and I am sorry, what I am I missing?  I have seen other 72 EB-2s before (Gibson pup covers and Schallers ) so the custom order thing goes over my head entirely.  And walnut finished later EB-2s are not unusual either.  So what is the deal?  Who is our Maritime Canada Gibson fan?  He has one as well.

That's maple. And it's nice.

The seller is long established and legitimate. I disagree that the lack of any in the shipping totals makes this a custom order. Those shipping totals aren't necessarily accurate. And even if it were a custom order, it's not an unknown finish or a custom bass.

"Custom Order" is a flexible term. Is "could you make me a walnut EB-2 while you're at it?" a "Custom Order"? Not to me, but other people might think different. I saw that part as sales blurb in any case. Custom Order is to me something like my 8 string LP they made at the request of TM Stevens, i.e. a variation of an existing model whose changes are more than skin-deep.

It's still one hell of a purdy EB-2. That walnut gives the fin a depth other, more solid color variations lack. And they sure picked a nice piece of maple.

When did we throw that around?  I must have been distracted by a Focke Wulf discussion.

I disagree on they never did them in walnut finish.  I have been seeing the odd EB-2 in walnut for years, back when they weren't worth a refinish.  It is the same finish that Gibson went overboard on in the early 70s/puprle and white label period.  They used that on a ton of ES-335s in that period and the crummy fat bodied Sleepy LaBeef ES.  And also on that ES with a plastic control plate.  God forgive me, I can't remember all the names.  And they also shot that cocoa tint on a lot of EB variants in the early 70s.  

Rare?  Of course.  But I always looked at them as what you saw on the back of pretty much any sunburst EB-2 - all brown.

I do dig 72 pup covers though.  If they had one of those Norlin pickguard with "Gibson" and the curved lines, it would be proppa!

Gibson did do EB2s in Walnut there is a bone stock one art the House of Guitars right now. Been there for years.

You might be on to something here, Ilan, I wouldn't rule it out. Cherry EB-2s can end up looking like this:



But the tone of the specimen in this thread seems to be something else still.
