Gibson Basses / Re: One of a kind Thunderbird on reverb

All said and done, I think it's quite pretty looking.  The lack of a scratchplate helps.

I think the only one I was genuinely sad about letting go was my ivory one...it was a thing of beauty and it did sound great, but I do know where it is.  That's said, and while of course desired tone is quite subjective, my Lull JAXT4 sounds more like I want to sound (so neither better nor worse).

I'm a little interested in the new Epiphones, but they seem to be being pushed back and back (how many months since the original leaked scrub sheet?).

If Gibson did decide to release a new Thunderbird with a two-part bridge, clover machines etc., then it would pique my interest, however they seem more concerned as a company with the continual reinvention of the Les Paul and SG whilst releasing truly appalling looking new models, when they should be doing doublecut Les Paul Jnrs with a P90 in the bridge position.  We play with a lot of bands and we always discuss gear; nearly every punky band we gig with questions why Gibson are making Jnrs.

Gibson Basses / My work here is done...

Afternoon from the UK
After about a decade of using Gibson Thunderbirds, my dalliance with the brand is over with my final 'bird is shipping off to Portugal tomorrow.  I've owned around ten in the last decade, but decided about three months ago to - and I hate using this term - thin the herd as I'm essentially migrating over to Mike Lulls.  I'm currently down to a Lull JAXT4, a Hamer FBIV and a very old beaten up Aria ProII Primary Bass.  I have another Lull on order (NRT5, ovesized body), which should drop inside of eight weeks, so the Gibsons have funded that.  Well, some of that.  I really won't miss the tedium (and expense) of swapping out those three-pointers for Babicz replacements.

I do feel a little melancholic, but things move along.  Quality over quantity, I suppose.  I'll keep an eye on what Gibson are doing, but as there's nothing bass-wise on the 2018 catalogue, I doubt that'll be on my agenda for the next 52 weeks at least.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I'll dip in periodically for a catchup to see who's moaning about what.

Love to everyone.
Paul

I don't have glowing tubes, so while live I go through an RBI, studio work I always go through a Sansamp BDDI, dunno, it just sounds better.  I might try and bag one of those new Q-Strip boxes for live applications.

Gibson refinances several obligations
In the meantime, here's the latest example of Gibson promoting itself as a lifestyle brand.  :puke:

Good. F*cking. Grief.

While I don't advocate violence towards women, the look on that ginger's face at the 57 second mark just made want to punch her in the throat.  'I has a guitar!  I has a guitaaaaar!'  Same goes that bloke with the blue 335.

This red one was starting to grow on me. I was planning on bidding on it before I upped my offer on the "Fire Burst" bass.........

Not really a fan of these basses, but that red one looks sweet.  The small machines make the headstock look a bit understated...needs some big old clover leaf ones on it.

I'm pretty sure these are in this thread, and pretty early on, but it has a meaning today... rip Mr Watts...

Just for the record, one of the female backing singers on that clip is Sue Holderness.  Better known this side of the pond for playing Marlene Boyce in the BBC comedy 'Only Fools And Horses'.

It will be interesting to hear what those "ProBucker 760" sound like!

It's interesting...the only bass I've ever owned out of the box that sounded distinctly different to any of the others was a Rickenbacker 4003 and even after about fifteen minutes of dialling in my tone it sounded virtually the same as the rest of them.  That's the thing; I know what my tone should sound like and I've kind of known that for 25 years or more, so my expectation of that gritty Geddy Lee/Jean Jacques Burnel sound will always be there.  I have a £25 Aria Primary and a £3.2K Lull (and a few in between), they all sound fairly similar once I've had a noodle 'n tweak.

Here's a slice of Italian pop-punk for you.  It's really very good.

The (reversed) headstock styling works really well on that, but then again, I like the Spector headstock on a Thunderbird.

Hey Rob.  Happy birthday to me today.  The book is a beautiful thing...it's just a shocker that no one has done anything close to it before.  Well done!  I f*cking love it.

Well mine arrived safely this morning, but it's gone straight into the paws of my wife.  It's either going to form part of my birthday pressie on the 1st December or Christmas.
