The Outpost Cafe / RIP Kelly Holland
« on: February 24, 2014, 06:15:32 AM »
I can hardly believe it: My favorite singer of all time, Kelly Holland, has passed away.

He sang on the album Brother from Cry Of Love.
Kelly's voice was right up there with great singers such as Bon Scott, Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart and Steve Marriott.

RIP Kelly Holland. Thank you for your great music!

This is painful to watch/hear.

The mix certainly doesn't do Mr Coverdale any favours here. But even if they buried the vocals in the mix it would've been obvious his singing days are over...

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / cured neckdive Epi JCS
« on: September 08, 2013, 07:29:53 AM »
I finally got round to installing the Gotoh Res-o-lites on my Epiphone Jack Casady Signature.
The pegholes were too wide for the Gotoh bushings, so I had to fix that first. I used two component car filler to make the holes a nice snug fit.

While I was at it, I cut off the top end of the headstock and gave it a Gibsonized look  ;).

Neckdive is cured now

Gibson Basses / The cross band of a Les Paul Bass body
« on: September 01, 2013, 12:09:55 PM »
Does any of you guys know what kind of wood the thin plate between the mahogany front and back of a seventies Les Paul Bass is?

Could it be that it's just a mahogany veneer with the grain turned 90° ?

Other Bass Brands / BaCH shortscale semi acoustic
« on: August 24, 2013, 12:19:14 PM »
A few weeks ago the very first shortscale semi acoustic bass came in from my Czech friends.
It had no bridge (and so also without strings)

Initially I had planned to install a bridge that I had found on Ebay: a two point wrap-around bridge

But when that arrived a few days ago, it appeared to be much too small for this bass. 15 mm string spacing and ridiculously tiny holes to pull the strings through. Perfect for a mandolin, but useless for this bass

So off to Plan B. The trusted three point bridge  ;).
I have no problems with those bridges, and it sort of fits with the whole design of the bass anyway.
I had one lying in a drawer, so I went ahead with a ruler and a drilling machine.
So far so good.

But like I already knew; the angle of the body and neck was rather big. I had to raise the bridge very high on the strings posts to make for a normal action. I didn't figure it would be a good idea to have the studs raised that high, so I decided to use taller saddles. I have an old Pearl Bass that has tall saddles. So I tried these. But they wouldn't fit the three point bridge that I had installed. There are obviously differences between the three point bridges that are out there...

So - for the time being - I decided to make my own saddles, just to get the bass up and running.
I had some ebony at home. It is as hard as stone, so I thought that might be a good idea.
In the proces of cutting out the saddles, two snapped before they were done. But after some work I had four decent saddles.

I am going to use nylon for the rest of the series. I is much easier to work with and I happen to like the sound of nylon saddles. Plus it fits the EB2 nicely.

The bass is very comfortable to play. The mahogany neck feels very familiar. The sound of the humbucker is rather different than the sound of the humbucker on the longscale BaCH semi acoustic that I have. The humbucker in this blonde shortie is more focussed and clear. Not muddy.
I have no idea what it is exactly. It has a BaCH logo on the chrome cover. But BaCH does not make their own pickups...
I'll ask them where they found this

Anyway, here's the bridge with ebony saddles:

And here's the SAB-1S NA (Semi Acoustic Bass -1 humbucker, short scale - natural) in it's full glory:

Other Bass Brands / Lo-z pickups Ballurio: experiences, opinions?
« on: August 17, 2013, 11:06:52 AM »
In my everlasting quest for a pickup builder who can recreate the Gibson Low Impedance stacked humbuckers from the Les Paul Basses, I found Ballurio.

Obviously a luthier with his own ideas on guitar building. And not only his own ideas about guitars; also pickups stay well clear of the generic stuff that is out there.

So I sent him an email in which I told him about my fetish for Gibson Les Paul basses and my quest for similar pickups.
He replied a short message within a day, apologising he was on a road trip and he would get back to me for a full answer in a few days.

And then there's a roaring silence. It's been three weeks. But still no sign of Ballurio.

The pickups and the specs sure look like they could come close to the old Gibson pickups.

Does any of you guys know him or his work? I can't seem to find any soundclips or YouTube examples of his work...

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Fretless Acoustic Bass
« on: July 17, 2013, 02:07:26 PM »
I'm finally done building my fretless acoustic bass. I've worked on this bass for two years. Didn't work non stop of course, but one evening in every two weeks. And the occasional lost hours at home. To be honest the whole project took much longer than I had planned. I made it way too complicated for myself. Guess I was a bit hard headed in doing things my way instead of the usual way it's done  :o

But hey; the thing is here now

Fretless
Shortscale (30 inch)
Maple sides
Contoured spruce top
Contoured bookmatched flamed maple back
The neck is made of two parts maple and one part mahogany in the middle
The nut, bridge and tailpiece are ebony
De fretless fingerboard is ebony with mahogany fetlines
Gotoh res-o-lite tuners
Pyramid flatwounds

The bass has two soundports at the front side. These are not only holes but actual ports. The sound has to travel a bit further than it would with just the usual hole.
At the side -for the player on the top side- there's another soundhole. This projects the sound towards the player (=me) while playing. I built it for msylef to noodle at the couch and learn how to play fretless. The soundhole can be closed by sliding a bent piece of mahogany.
The soundhole also functions as a sort of "inspection shutter" so I can (re-)place the soundpost. The bass features a soundpost (or staple?) and a bass bar. Just like a violin, cello and double bass.

My goal was to build a bass that would be as loud as possible without amplification. I did not succeed. The bass sounds just as loud (or soft) and any other acoustic bass. But it does have the character of a sort of mini double bass. I think I kinda like that.

I has been a fruitful experience.
Onwards to the next project!  ;D
